Pandemic Bullies
If you're not wearing a mask yet... you'd better, first and foremost to protect yourself and others you interact with for the virus. But there's something else you may have to protect yourself from as well. I'm noticing an increase in hostility towards people who aren't wearing masks. I saw my first case of violence against some guy who got on a line without a mask and them mouthed off to someone with a mask-- someone much bigger than him with a mask-- when he was asked to get out of the line and move away. He wound up with a bloody nose or mouth because he mouthed off, not becau... more »

American Suez?: The Costs Of Bombing Iran
Decaying empires behave badly. Late-stage imperial states easily fall prey to perilous insecurity and irrationality, and tend to lash out like wounded, cornered animals. Perhaps it must be so: naught but a collective macro-reflection of the human condition. Unfortunately, many thousands - often millions - of innocents tend to die at the denouement of empire. "Dirty wars" usually ensue during the imperial endgame. That time is near, it seems, for the American hegemon. There’s hardly “dirtier,” or nastier, proof of “bad behavior” than recent reports that Secretary of State Mike ... more »

On Quarantine
The community that uses quarantining as a method of protection from disease is in the long run infinitely more weakened than it is by the prevalence of disease. The more effective the quarantine, the less immune people become to new diseases and the less incentive they have to develop better methods of treatment—and this makes them more vulnerable to any future outbreak.

The 2020 Great Recession 2.0–Or Worse! (Part 1)

A bona fide Depression on the scale of the 1930s may be approaching.

Would a special submarine make them better? The U.S. Navy is hard at work developing new underwater transports for its elite commandos. The SEALs expect the new craft—and improvements to large submarine “motherships” that will carry them—to be ready by the end of the decade. SEALs have ridden in small submersibles to sneak into hostile territory for decades. For instance, ... more »

But it also isn't very good. For years the AR-15 pistol had a rough time in the handgun and personal defense weapon markets. Reviews tended to be critical or even dismissive. Some even openly mocked the weapon for its supposed impracticality. The public wasn’t very interested in it other than as a novelty gun. *This first appeared in 2019 and is being reposted due to reader... more »

The Coronavirus Stimulus Will Fail If Local Governments Don't Receive Funding
*Stephanie Leiser* *Politics, Americas* $150 billion is not enough for nearly 40,000 local governments across America. Lawmakers are pinning their hopes on a US$2 trillion package to prop up the U.S. economy and provide relief to individuals and business ravaged by the coronavirus. The stimulus is expected to pump $150 billion in aid to state and local governments. But with nearly 40,000 local governments across all 50 states, the money will be stretched thin and is likely to run out quickly. It may be time for businesses to move out of New York City for the benefit of their corporate cohesion. I have worked in New York City and while the good old boy network there has roots that run deep, the current Chinese Plague that is infecting the city is once again illustrating a fatal weakness in the place. It's congested, it's unhealthy, it's ruinously expensive and there is little need to site yourself there in this day and age of virtual environments.
