Thanks to all the contributors to the comments section for all your outstanding posts and links! Like everybody else, I'm awaiting the details of the top-secret trillion dollar-plus stimulus package currently being tied up in slippery snakelike ribbons by the Senate racketeers..It's always a bad sign whenever you don't get to see what's in one of these emergency measures before it's too late. It's also a bad sign when the individuals and families allegedly -maybe- on the receiving end of pennies to the dollar awarded to the usual corporate grifters of the world are being cynically ... more »

Curse of the Bermuda Triangle -- Witchcraft
For several decades I have been of the opinion that the Bermuda Triangle was a manufactured mystery. I thought that most of the disappearances had a rational if tragic explanation. When all the nonsense was stripped away and the facts were examined, then we would know what happened. Much of the Bermuda Triangle lore was based on faulty information. Given all that, it was strange that I was caught up in an episode of *Curse of the Bermuda Triangle*. The episode concerned the disappearance of the *Witchcraft*, what I would consider a pleasure boat or cabin cruiser. The story as told ... more »
A few ambitious points on fighting the crisis
We are facing two crises at once, health and economic, that are related in very important ways. The covid-19 epidemic has done major damage around the world, but it’s highlighting some serious structural problems with the US social model that better-run countries are not so afflicted by. We are plagued by a deep economic polarization complicated by minimal social protections; severely diminished state capacity, with eroded institutional structures and extremely debased quality of personnel at the highest levels; years of underinvestment in basic infrastructure, both broadly and in h... more »

We Desperately Need A Mass Strike Against The Billionaire Class
The Democratic presidential primary is becoming a pitched battle between the interests of workers and billionaires—the type of fight that Jane McAlevey knows well. The author of A Collective Bargain: Unions, Organizing, and the Fight for Democracy, McAlevey has focused her career as a labor organizer, writer and educator on how to build power—and how to win. In light of the current class struggle shaping up inside (and outside) the primary, her thoughts on how to make strategic interventions are a breath of fresh air. Epidemic Exacerbation: Washington’s Shameful Record Of Hypocrisy.
There are times when President Trump’s overt race-baiting and cynical nativism are almost refreshing. And no doubt, as photos emerge showing his brazen personal edits - crossing out the word “Corona,” and substituting “China” -virus - to a recent speech, it seems The Donald has finally traded in his “dog-whistle” for a “dog-bullhorn.” Sort of reminds one of the early 1980s, when it wasn't uncommon to refer to AIDS as “GRIDS” (Gay-related immunodeficiency) - or the “gay plague” - and the dereliction of then President Reagan’s response, whereby he didn't even speak publicly on the d... more »

SARS-CoV-2 or COVID19, now declared a global pandemic by the World Health Organisation, has begun to wreak havoc in large parts of the world, with other parts waiting in anticipation. We are in a real struggle, which needs total mobilisation; a struggle that needs to put life before profit. We will only win this struggle – as China has already done – if our people are united and disciplined, if governments earn our respect by their actions, and if we act in solidarity across the globe. The Best Health System To React To COVID-19
As the coronavirus surges through America, the country’s only national health care system—the Veterans Health Administration (VHA)—is facing a massive test. The agency must simultaneously treat its vulnerable population of nine million patients, while preparing to fulfill its so-called “fourth mission,” which is to help respond to national emergencies and pandemics. For years, the VHA has been unfairly cast in the press and in Congress as a failing institution, even as its care has consistently outperformed the private sector on key metrics. In recent years, the VHA has developed u... more »

The New Normal
For years now, the gig economy has been morphing into our new economic model. Martin Regg Cohn writes that the coronavirus has made gig workers of us all: If you think these are tough times, spare a thought for those already living it, and likely to experience it for the rest of their working lives. Who are these people? Today these people are us, cooped up at home. But in recent years, it has been a lot of “other” people — from the millennial children of boomers who have never known anything but the gig economy, to new immigrants lacking local experience, to older workers lacki... more »
Japan Should Have Taken Yamamoto's Warnings About America More Seriously
*Warfare History Network* *History, Asia* Admiral Isoruoku Yamamoto led the Imperial Japanese Navy into war but warned that the United States was a formidable foe. Brave, urbane, and complex, Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto was Japan’s greatest naval strategist and the architect of one of the most stunning achievements in the history of modern warfare. Fluent in English, he studied in the United States and claimed many American friends before he became one of their deadly enemies. A solid and widely respected man, he argued passionately for peace in the 1930s while fascism spread in Eu... more »
Like History? Don't Overlook These Eight World War II Books
*Warfare History Network* *History, * They are all impressive and insightful works. *Key point:* Many of the engagements, landings, and fights that took place during this campaign are worthy of a book of their own The Japanese superbattleship *Musashi* was steaming east along with a fleet of other battleships, cruisers, and destroyers on their way toward what was expected to be a climactic battle at Leyte Gulf. At 8:10 am on October 24, 1944, Musashi’s captain ordered the crew to battle stations. An American scout plane had been spotted overhead. The fleet lacked its own air cove... more »
Cancer Cells Can't Withstand This Treatment's Medicinal 'Double-Strike'
*Ingo Ringshausen* *Public Health, World* A new treatment brings us closer to eradicating cancer. *Key point:* This “double strike” on immune cancers has the potential to significantly enhance current treatments and extend life expectancy for many patients. Cancer of the immune system, called lymphoma or leukaemia, generally affects the entire body’s bone marrow and lymph nodes. Because these types of cancers are so widespread, surgery isn’t useful, so patients are usually treated with chemotherapy. Although these treatments have become significantly better in the past ten years... more »
China's Air Force Is Growing Fast, But It's Mostly Fly Old Planes
*Sebastien Roblin* *Security, Asia* Out with the old. *Key point: *Roughly 33 percent of the PLAAF and PLANAF’s combat aircraft are old second-generation fighters of limited combat value against peer opponents. The People’s Liberation Army Air Force of China and its sister branch, the PLA Naval Air Force, operate a huge fleet of around 1,700 combat aircraft—defined here as fighters, bombers and attack planes. This force is exceeded only by the 3,400 active combat aircraft of the U.S. military. Moreover, China operates a lot of different aircraft *types* that are not well known... more »
American Soldiers Saw True Evil When They Liberated Hitler's Nazi Concentration Camps
*Warfare History Network* *History, Europe* A veteran remembers. *Key Point:* The Holocaust was seared into their memories. BACKSTORY: The final months of World War II in the European Theater were a harrowing and desperate time for the soldiers who fought there. No one wanted to die when the war was so close to its end. This called for caution in the minds of many, yet the fighting was not over. The forces of Hitler’s Third Reich––still actively resisting the advancing Allies–– simply had to be beaten. Further, they had to be made to understand they were beaten, lest there be a... more »
Coronavirus Answers: How Seniors Can Ease Into Social Distancing
*Victoria Atabakhsh* *Public Health, World* [image: Reuters] Here's how to ease the resistance they may feel. In the midst of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we’re all attempting to adapt to new routines and schedules as we adjust to our new social-distancing lifestyle. Although we’re all vulnerable to the coronavirus, we must not forget the population that’s most at risk — older adults, 65 and up. Although almost all long-term and retirement facilities have been closed for visitation to non-health-care workers, there are still many older adults living in our communities — alone ... more »

Progress Breeds Pessimism
Progress breeds pessimism. The last 100 years have brought a significant improvement in the political and financial systems in most nations, and this, in turn, has resulted in large-scale technological and industrial progress and a comfortable lifestyle for many people. Yet, paradoxically, the thinking of our intellectuals has taken an apocalyptic turn—there is an avalanche of books and movies on holocaust, cataclysmic global pandemic, devastating climate change, epic battles with powerful manmade or alien forces, asteroid impacts, or a dystopian post-apocalypse world in which few r... more »

The Wizard of Wuhan
In response to the bleating, whining, politically-correct adult snowflakes in the media who cry, “It’s not the Chinese flu” … here’s a viewpoint that’s just a tad more realistic. Penned by Guy Sorman for City Journal, 20 March 2020: You, Xi It is time for Americans to recognize and acknowledge that the Chinese president is not our friend. I hold Xi Jinping guilty of starting the coronavirus pandemic, which began in the Chinese city of Wuhan and has now caused thousands of deaths around the world and an economic recession that will ravage all of us for years. My accusation … Continue... more »

The Future, as Things Are Going
The way things are going, it may not be that difficult to predict the future, even admitting that it certainly hides new surprises. In 650 words, here are some predictions informed by economics (and birds’ entrails), whether the epidemic itself is being exaggerated or not. The shortages—real shortages, not “smurfages”—created by government price controls (the […] The post The Future, as Things Are Going appeared first on Econlib.
"A Marvelous Victory..."
"To be hopeful in bad times is based on the fact that human history is not only of cruelty, but also of compassion, sacrifice, courage, kindness. If we see only the worst, it destroys our capacity to do something. If we remember those times and places where people have behaved magnificently, this gives us the energy to act. And if we do act, in however small a way, we don't have to wait for some grand Utopian future. The future is an infinite succession of presents, and to live now as we think human beings should live, in defiance of all that is bad around us, is itself a marvelous... more »

Before heading to my home I made the decision to drop by an office that a friend lets me keep in Old Montreal. He is the senior partner in a large law-firm, and he is located on Place d'Armes where Montreal's version of the Notre-Dame Basilica is also located (see above picture). Last night we learned that all schools in the UK will close at the end of the week. ‘They are taking away everything that I have been working for’, was how one of my daughters expressed her frustration. “I’ve never really viewed myself as particularly talented. Where I excel is ridiculous, sickening work ethic. You know, while the other guy’s sleeping, I’m working. While the other guys’ eating, I’m working. The only thing that I see that is distinctly different about me is: I’m not afraid to die on a treadmill. I will not be outworked, period. You might have more talent than me, you might be smarter than me, you might be sexier than me. You might be all of those things. You got it on me in nine categories. Free Download: Seneca, "On Anger"
"In his essay “On Anger” ("De La Ira"), the Roman Stoic thinker Seneca (c. 4 BC–65 AD) argues that anger is the most destructive passion: “No plague has cost the human race more dear.” This was proved by his own life, which he barely preserved under one wrathful emperor, Caligula, and lost under a second, Nero. Drawing on his great arsenal of rhetoric, including historical examples (especially from Caligula’s horrific reign), anecdotes, quips, and soaring flights of eloquence, Seneca builds his case against anger with mounting intensity. Like a fire-and-brimstone preacher, he pain... more »
