It’s the Particles, Not the Cholesterol

Ashley Swanson at TDW - 16 hours ago
Most people have probably been told that to assess their individual risk for coronary heart disease (CHD) then calculated laboratory measurements of LDL-C, HDL-C and total cholesterol must be taken. Ironically, despite established evidence that these are no longer useful or predictive tests, they are still the most commonly used markers to assess CHD risk … Continue reading "It’s the Particles, Not the Cholesterol" The post It’s the Particles, Not the Cholesterol appeared first on TDW.

Almost Everything About Vox's Bernie Piece Is Problematic-- Except The Conclusion: Bernie Is The Best Democratic Candidate

On Tuesday morning, *Vox* began a series of articles on the 2020 primary election campaign that they promise will endeavor to make the best case for the election of each of the top Democratic presidential contenders. Matthew Yglesias might be the last person on earth you would imagine endorsing Bernie Sanders but he kicked off the series with an early morning tweet that probably shocked virtually *all* of his many detractors: The case for Bernie, he wrote, "is that he is the unity candidate... unique in combining an authentic, values-driven political philosophy with a surprising... more »

This Eden - A Rant

Craig at Is the BBC biased? - 16 hours ago
Every girl crazy 'bout a sharp dressed man I'll be watching this one *very *carefully. If cravat-sporting Conservative MP for Morecambe and Lunesdale David Morris and his splendid question to PM Boris Johnson about bringing the Eden Project to Morecambe isn't the lead story on every BBC news bulletin today I'm going to write the stroppiest complaint the BBC has ever received. It will be so stroppy that even Owen Jones would gasp at it, so massive would the chip on my shoulder be. And Boris was quite right to say that Morecambe itself *is* Eden. I have, however, crossed ITV newsreade... more »

Traveling in the West (not quite a rant)

LL at Virtual Mirage - 16 hours ago
Montana is colder than Arizona. I don't know if any of you will disagree with me on that point. In Montana you NEED to wear thermal underwear during the winter. In the Arizona mountains, it's optional. You also need to plug in your truck's radiator in Montana. Not in Arizona. Moving on, I came across a "Code of the West" brochure, stuffed into the Bible in a motel in Whitefish, Montana. Naturally I read it (having read the Bible previously). The brochure advised that you weren't in 'the city' anymore and that when out west, you were expected to take care of yourself, which included ... more »

Is Perrier Bad For Your Teeth?

The Conversation at Science 2.0 blogs - 16 hours ago
For many people, the start of a year is a time for new health resolutions – be it eat more vegetables, consume less sugar or drink more water. Keeping hydrated is essential for body functions such as temperature regulation, transporting nutrients and removing waste. Water even acts as a lubricant and shock absorber for joints. But while most people know they should drink more water, it can be a bit boring. So what about sparkling water as an option to liven things up a bit? After all, sparkling water is just as good as normal water, right? Not quite. read more

Guess who is to blame?

Craig at Is the BBC biased? - 16 hours ago
I see Matthew Price and Tina Daheley are still doing their daily podcast *Beyond Today.* Monday's edition asked the question *Australian fires: who is to blame?* The programme blamed the Australian government, the country's coal industry and, of course, Trump. There wasn't even a single mention of arson. So what's *Beyond Today *like these days? Well, it's the kind of BBC programme where the presenter, here Matthew Price, can say things like this: One of the things that makes this even sadder for a lot of Australians is that it almost feels a bit self-inflicted. State of Radio 4 Continuity

Craig at Is the BBC biased? - 16 hours ago
If you didn't hear it, I suspect you might enjoy Lionel Shriver's pro-Brexit *State of the Nation *on Radio 4 today, which balanced out Howard Jacobson's anti-Brexit piece on Monday. What you won't hear though if you listen via BBC Sounds is how the Radio 4 continuity announcer mispronounced Lionel's name both before and after her talk. Both times Ms. Shriver was made to rhyme with 'shiver' rather than with 'diver'. It didn't ruin her talk for me though, you'll be pleased to hear.

Whispers of some quiet conversation

Craig at Is the BBC biased? - 16 hours ago
Time for a Twitter chat over tea and biscuits: *Alex Deane*: This morning BBC Radio 4 broadcast a talking head explaining that the modern resurgence of the Toto song “Africa” is due in part to it harkening to a time of a happier future pre-Brexit. Seemingly nobody involved in the entire editing and curating process between that asinine claim being said and being aired thought “oh, let’s just hang on a second.” No alternative view to this was sought or offered. When the persistent, palpable (perhaps unconscious) bias at the BBC is finally addressed, defenders of the institution (wh... more »

An American dystopia - but is it deliberate?

Peter at Bayou Renaissance Man - 16 hours ago
There's an old military saying that you've seen in these pages before. "Once is happenstance; twice is coincidence; three or more times is enemy action." It's often attributed to Ian Fleming, from his James Bond novel "Goldfinger", but it's far older than that. I've seen similar sentiments expressed in eighteenth-century writings. Basically, it means that if the same thing happens, with similar results, too many times, it's not accidental or coincidental. Instead, someone's out to get you, and you need to do something serious about them before they do. I find myself repeatin... more »

*“We” Should Not Regulate Homeschooling* The desire to control other people’s ideas and behaviors, particularly when they challenge widely-held beliefs and customs, is one of human nature’s most nefarious tendencies. Socrates was sentenced to death for stepping out of line; Galileo almost was. What did the German soldiers think of the American soldiers?

As has been reported to me by no end of veterans over the years, the quality advantage was real. In fact, I would suggest that the Americans only addressed this properly after they lost the draft in the seventies. Now of course, they match the best in terms of training.
