Mark Steyn and the First Amendment

Norma at Collecting My Thoughts - 11 hours ago
Some of you, the informed ones, know who Mark Steyn is. He's an immigrant, a humorist, a wit, occasionally fills in for Rush Limbaugh, and I've seen him on Fox as a talking head. He's also being sued by an academic for not worshiping the climate gods, even after hacked documents showed him to be right. Someone else made a joke about Michael E. Mann, a professor of meteorology at Pennsylvania State University and a climate activist, and Mann sued him and Steyn for calling his hockey stick graph "fraudulent." It was an opinion that should have been covered by the first amendment and... more »

Only Congress could make up such unfair rules

Norma at Collecting My Thoughts - 11 hours ago
I was on a jury a few years back on an auto accident insurance case--it was based on the Ohio "golden turkey" law. Too complicated and absurd to explain, but it has since been repealed. However, it was shocking to me what could get a person tossed from jury selection. If your brother in law was in an auto accident 10 years ago and won his case, you could be considered prejudiced and get bumped. But when a man who was elected by 63,000,000 people is on trial for 2 non-crimes, the jury is made up of people who have been demanding his removal since before he was inaugurated in hopes ... more »

Moscow's answer was the very fast MiG-25 which lasted for many years. In 1964, the Soviet Union’s awesome MiG-25 Foxbat jet fighter flew for the first time. Specifically designed to intercept the U.S. Air Force’s spy planes, the MiG-25 could routinely reach Mach 2.8—nearly three times the speed of sound. *(... more »

The Many Matryoska Dolls to America’s Way of Imagining Iran

[image: undefined] On the 17 September 1656, Oliver Cromwell, a Protestant Puritan, who had won a civil war, and had the English king beheaded in public, railed against England’s enemies. There was, he told Parliament that day, an axis of evil abroad in the world. And this axis – led by Catholic Spain – was, at root, the problem of a people that had placed themselves at the service of “evil”. This “evil”, and the servitude that it beget, was the evil of a religion – Catholicism – that refused the English peoples’ desire for simple liberties: “… [an evil] that put men under restraint... more »

A New Definition of Warfare

Trump also has enhanced troop levels both in the Middle East and in Afghanistan while also increasing the frequency and lethality of armed drone attacks worldwide. President. Donald J. Trump meets with Xi Jinping (Source: Flickr/Official White House Photo by Sheelah Craighead) *U.S. and China Sign “Phase One” Trade Deal but Leave Key Issues Unresolved * On Jan. 15, the United States and China signed a “phase one” trade deal that the Trump administration says will provide safeguards for intellectual property, boost sales of U.S. goods and services in China, and provide greater access to the Chinese market for U.S. companies. While the president praised the deal as a “momentous” step, critics have noted that the deal leaves largely untouched... more »

A VERY STABLE DUMBNESS: Aristotle's picture prevails!

bob somerby at the daily howler - 13 hours ago
*WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 22, 2020Two scribes spot "well-informed experts:"* In the wake of Sunday night's cable show, the New York Times editorial board has been getting a bit of attention. As presented, the hour-long TV show may have suffered from a bit of a "Cupcake Wars" feel. Beyond that, the board—or, at least, the deputy editorial page editor—decided to endorse two candidates in a Democratic nomination fight which only one hopeful can win. (No real attempt was made to explain how she reached the decision. She described the decision as hers, though she did share it with "the pu... more »

The paradox the Democrats are trying to sell you: The House did their job but they need more evidence

trinko at Conversations about the obvious - 13 hours ago
In her comments to the Senate House Democrat Zoe Lofgren said that the House had done their job yet she also said that more evidence is needed. But those two statements are contradictory. If the House made a strong case that Trump had done something criminal then there would be no need for new evidence. We know for a fact that the House choose, wasn't forced to but chose, to not try and get the documents and witness testimony that they now say are essential to their case. The House refused to use the Courts to resolve whether or not Trump's claims of executive privilege--the right... more »

CNN hires a dishonest "reporter" with ties to Hillary to cover the White House

trinko at Conversations about the obvious - 13 hours ago
CNN just hired John Harwood to cover the Trump White House. That shows just how dishonest CNN is and it proves that they are nothing more than a propaganda arm of the Democrat party. Why? Because we know, thanks to the leak of DNC emails, that prior to moderating a Republican primary debate in 2016 Harwood asked Hillary Clinton's campaign chairman, John Podesta, what questions he should ask Jeb Bush, the presumptive Republican from runner at the time. The emails also reveal Harwood giving Podesta advice on how to beat Black Republican Ben Carson. Sane people don't call folks who c... more »

They've Learned Nothing

Owen Gray at Northern Reflections - 13 hours ago
Recently, I've devoted a lot of space to the escalating confrontation between the Ford government and Ontario's teachers. My interest in this situation is obvious. But, in the end, what sticks in my craw is the fact that, over the last twenty-five years -- a generation -- Ontario's so called *Progressive* Conservatives have learned nothing. The Fordians have always wanted this confrontation. Martin Regg Cohn writes: Intoxicated by their electoral victory, Doug Ford’s Tories placed themselves on a deliberate collision course with teachers last year. By declaring a legislated cap on... more »

The GAO's grand reveal was unlawful

trinko at Conversations about the obvious - 13 hours ago
The GAO recently made the absurd ruling that Trump delaying delivery of aid to Ukraine for a few weeks was a crime. That's incorrect for a number of reasons including the fact that the President, not Congress, has Constitutional authority over all foreign policy other than treaties and declaring war. Second while the GAO acted as though this was a big deal it turns out that past Presidents had done the same thing. Third it turns out that delaying aid is very common and the GAO has not previously made a big deal about it. But the Wall Street Journal points out act under the relevant... more »

The "whistleblower" was heard discussing how to remove Trump from office long before the Ukraine call

trinko at Conversations about the obvious - 13 hours ago
While the Democrats and the #FakeNews media refuse to disclose who the "whistleblower" is it's actually common knowledge; it's a CIA analyst named Eric Ciaramella. Is identity is relevant for the simple Constitutional reason that in American justice accusers are required to confront the people they accuse. While Democrats say that would put Ciaramella at risk they seem to forget that that they support people who give testimony against gangs and organized crime members having to appear in court to do so. Essentially Democrats are using their Big Lie that Republicans are more dangero... more »

Can GM crops really “feed the world”? Challenging the Flawed Premise Behind Pushing GMOs into Indian Agriculture

barovsky at The New Dark Age - 14 hours ago
A common claim is that genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are essential to agriculture if we are to feed an ever-growing global population. Supporters of genetically engineered (GE) crops argue that by increasing productivity and yields, this technology will also help boost farmers’ incomes and lift many out of poverty.

When coercion enters, virtue and excellence leave. The people of France are headed into a long conflict in which both of their options are doomed.

The political forces which perform great acts of kindness are seldom forgiven by the intellectuals. The conservatives are categorized by the intellectuals as a barbaric, fascist, and racist force, but the condition of the poor and the minorities is far better in the nations with healthy conservative movements than in the liberal nations.
