Exchange Rate Undervaluation for Export-Led Growth Promotion
Global Issues News Headlines - 11 hours ago
BERLIN and KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 28 (IPS) - One mercantilist view is that exchange rate undervaluation – e.g., via accumulation of foreign exchange reserves in China's case – is ‘industrial policy' to promote export-led growth, benefiting producers of exports while discouraging imports. UNITED NATIONS, Jan 28 (IPS) - Increasingly, the ability of multilateralism to address contemporary global issues such as climate change and international trade is being questioned. In the case of international trade, WTO Members have thus far not been able to conclude the Doha Round, which was launched in November 2001. The Round was supposed to have been concluded on 1 January 2005, but it has been beset by persistent differences among the WTO Members. Whereas most developing countries believe that the Round is still active and have called for the fulfilment of all Doha mandates... more »

#FakeNews media lie to you: TV networks covered Democrat impeachment talks wall to wall but aren't doing so for Trump's defense
There are lies of commission, Democrats care about Blacks, and there are lies of omission, not mentioning that thousands of Blacks are shot year after year in Democrat run cities. When the House impeachment mangers droned on endlessly and repetitively about their totally made up impeachment case ABC, CBS, and NBC dropped regular programming and showed Schiff lying through his teeth. This week when Trump's lawyers are eviscerating Schiff's lies those same networks aren't covering them. Quick Question: Why did Joe Biden fire only 1 corrupt Ukrainian official?
Democrats and the #FakeNews media are saying that Biden isn't corrupt because the prosecutor he fired was corrupt and "everyone" wanted him fired. They say that the fact that that firing ended the investigation into Burisma, the company that paid Hunter Biden millions of dollars, was just a coincidence The question that that position raises is given that at the time the US had identified many people in the Ukraine government as being corrupt why did Biden use a quid pro quo to only fire the one corrupt Ukrainian who could hurt Biden personally? Why didn't Joe use the $1B in aid to ... more »

Biden corruption: The facts
Trump's lawyers laid out the case for Joe Biden being corrupt. This is important because if there is cause for a reasonable person, ie not a Democrat, to think that Biden engaged in corrupt practices in Ukraine then it's hard to see how Trump wanting to investigate that could be an abuse of power. So here are the undisputed facts: - Obama made Joe Biden responsible for US policy vis a vis the Ukraine - Hunter Biden is hired by corrupt Ukrainian natural gas company Burisma - Hunter Biden has said, on TV, that he was hired because his dad is Joe Biden - Hunter Biden had... more »

Study shows leftism denies Black kids a decent education
A new report is out entitled "The Secret Shame: How America's most Progressive Cities Betray Their Commitment to Educational Opportunity for All" The basic message is that controlling for all other factors the cause for a gap in educational outcomes for minority children is if the city they live in is run by "progressives"; ie leftists. For example in the ultra progressive San Francisco 70% of white students are proficient in math but only 12% of Black students are; that's a 58% gap. Washington DC is another ultra leftist city and the gap there is 62% But in conservative cities ... more »

Tuesday Morning Links
This and that for your Tuesday reading. - Gabriel Winant reviews Matt Stoller's *Goliath*, and discusses in the process the importance of challenging the assumptions capitalism as a system rather than presuming that it can be rendered just merely by taking steps to break up immediate monopolies. And Alexandra Posadzki's reporting on threats from Rogers if the federal government tries to make access to networks more affordable only confirms the need for a national public alternative to the telecom oligopoly. - Meanwhile, John Clarke argues that after recognizing that housing is a ... more »
On The Armed Prophets
Nations get ripped apart by revolutionary upheavals when there is a confluence of dialectical forces; forces which involve elements of both idealism and reality. The central characters in the revolutionary drama are the armed prophets: the brilliant philosophers who possess great political skill. They have the skill for arousing the masses, leading armies, and their political activity is fuelled by a utopian vision of how society should be organized and humanity should live. The philosophers with an army or angry mob at their back can upend any nation—the politics of several nations... more »

Twofer Tuesday
*It's the Weather* It was 58 degrees (F) at the White Wolf Mine on Sunday. There is was trace snow Sunday night that dusted the place on Monday, but all in all, it's been a mild winter at 7,500 ft. on Arizona's Mogollon Rim. The automatic gate that lets you into the compound froze shut because the snow melted and was promptly turned to ice, the set the gears that turn to open the steel gate. And I had to chip a little ice and use some harsh language to get it open. Normally I wouldn't dwell on the weather here on the blog, but there are some of you who e-mailed me and asked me why... more »
Afghanistan - America's War Without an End
While you might be forgiven for thinking that the war in Afghanistan is over because it rarely makes it to the front pages of newspapers or a lead item on the nightly news, recent data from the United States Air Forces Central Command (AFCENT) shows that such is clearly not the case. The war, now in its 19th year, is still going strong from the viewpoint of the United States Air Force as you will see in this posting. Let's open with this article from Janes: It is important to keep in mind that up until December 2014, the United States was operating in Afghanistan with its allies i... more »

It would have carried harrier jump jets and have been very expensive. In the early 1980s, the Reagan Administration was looking to fund high visibility defense programs. Reagan had been elected on a platform of rebuilding the armed services after the “hollowing out” of the early 1970s. One example was the reactivation of four World War II-era... more »
A remarkable bullish, correct PBS video on Heisenberg, Bohr, bootstrap, and amplituhedrons
Peter F. sent me a link to a new PBS SpaceTime video Hacking the Nature of Reality (17-minute-long YouTube video) and told me that it would make me smile. I was very skeptical about that claim. Everything that other people systematically create to bombard me/us with seems frustrating these days. But holy cow, Peter was right. I was smiling soon and despite additional skepticism about my continued smile, I did continue to smile. ;-) The video is amazing. This part of PBS was clearly conquered by someone who knows the stuff, who is on the right side of everything when it comes to discu... more »
Mnuchin's Madness
Last week, at Davos, Steve Mnuchin told Greta Thunberg to go back to school and study economics. Paul Krugman writes: One can only surmise that Mnuchin slept through his undergraduate economics classes. Otherwise he would know that every, and I mean every, major Econ 101 textbook argues for government regulation or taxation of activities that pollute the environment, because otherwise neither producers nor consumers have an incentive to take the damage inflicted by this pollution into account. And burning fossil fuels is a huge source of environmental damage, not just from climat... more »

EVERY REPUBLICAN SHOULD BE DEMANDING WITNESSES, FOR PURELY CYNICAL REASONS
Leaks from John Bolton's book are making it at least somewhat more likely that witnesses will be called in the Senate impeachment trial. That's should make me happy, but it doesn't. President Trump is on trial, and the only witnesses who *should* be called are the ones on the Democrats' list -- Bolton, Mick Mulvaney, and so on -- but it seems clear that if witnesses are called, they'll come as part of a deal. Sen. Patrick J. Toomey (R-Pa.), an influential conservative in the Senate, has spoken with several colleagues in recent days about possibly summoning just two witnesses to Pres... more »
