Beware The Decline of U.S. Influence in South Asia
*Minaam Shah* *Security, Eurasia* [image: Reuters] The recent crisis depicts that the United States has lost considerable ground as an overarching influence in South Asia. South Asia, for the most part of Donald Trump's presidency, had been quiet up until earlier this year when the region's two main protagonists, India and Pakistan, nearly entered a nuclear face-off. A suicide attack on a paramilitary convoy in Indian controlled Kashmir triggered an aerial dogfight culminating in the capture of an Indian pilot who was later released by Pakistan. When Will the Unipolar World End?
*Peter Harris* *Security, Eurasia* [image: Reuters] Hegemony is premised on dominance in Asia and Europe. The American Century is fading. At least, that is the consensus among most analysts of international politics. Even so, it is unclear how we will know when the unipolar world has finally slipped away. What will it take f... more »

Don't Believe the War Hype on Iran
*Daniel R. DePetris* *Security, Middle East* President Donald Trump’s maximum pressure campaign is in many ways a continuation of the status-quo policy—but it is more effectively backing Iran into a corner, which is likely to result in a crisis or war. With American B-52’s being dispatched to the Persian Gulf and fears growing about Iranian-backed proxies preparing attacks against the United States or its friends in the region, Washington and Tehran are one miscalculation away from a large military confrontation neither the American or Iranian people want. On the Cynical Misuse of Memorial Day
Memorial Day was originally meant to be a solemn day of mourning for families, relatives and friends of Americans fallen on both sides in the Civil War. Special Goggles
The goggles are available on Kickstarter. The promotional video claims that the goggles are able to actively identify threats to political correctness and alert you when you're about to be dangerously oppressed. "Are you tired of having to search for something to be oppressed by?" a voiceover says in the ad. "With our patented microaggression-tracking technology, you won't have to search any longer. Now, you can instantly identify up to 100 things to be offended by in any conversation." The product will detect a wide range of microaggressions, including the following: White privi... more »
FDA Study: Toxic Sunscreen Chemicals Absorbed Into Blood
While there are instances where sunscreen may be prudent, these products are widely overused and contribute to widespread vitamin D deficiency. In my view, sunscreen is rarely needed, provided you’re following sensible sun exposure guidelines to prevent burning. Simply get out of the sun or wear clothing the moment your skin starts to turn light pink. A pilot study by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) shows four commonly used active ingredients in sunscreen are absorbed into your blood at levels that could potentially pose health risks. The four active ingredients looked i... more »

It's Just as Well
(By *American Zen*'s Mike Flannigan, on loan from Ari) *I*t's just as well that Trump's getting fellated in Japan, a nation that fears Trump will impose tariffs on them if his incessant Fox feed is interrupted for a second. He won't be around for Memorial Day, again, leaving Mike Pence to once more robotically leave a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier while secretly worrying whether or not the soldier was gay or not a Catholic. The lead image above that I'd chosen for this article pretty much is indicative of Trump's entire attitude toward the military. As Cadet Bone ... more »

'War-Monger': North Korea Reportedly Has Choice Words For John Bolton
*David Krayden* *Security, * Yikes. North Korea reportedly described national security advisor John Bolton as a “war monger” and “human defect” for his criticism of the state’s latest missile tests. The comments came from an anonymous North Korean Foreign Ministry representative Monday after Bolton called the country’s short-range missile testing a violation of United Nations Security Council resolutions, the Associated Press reported Monday. “It will be fit to call Bolton not a security adviser striving for security but a security-destroying adviser who is wrecking peace and ... more »

*Task and Purpose* *Security, * In April 2003, Smith fought through a hellish firefight, sacrificing his own life to save countless others, becoming the first American service member to earn the Medal of Honor after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. If you've served in the U.S. Army at some point over the past decade, you've probably heard of Sgt. 1st Class Paul Smith. Within the ranks, his name has become synonymous with extraordinary courage in the face of overwhelming odds. And for good reason. This Epic World War II Battle Defies All the History Books for 1 Reason
*War Is Boring* *Security, * It was fought after the war ended. *The Partisans initially bypassed the area around Odžak, focussing on harrying the German retreat, but by the middle of April they had encircled Rajkovačić’s position. Initial Partisan efforts to take ground were fruitless, and came at a considerable cost. With no artillery, armor or air support, the Partisans were limited to containing the Ustaša forces and launching probing attacks until they surrendered.* The small town of Odžak is nestled between the Bosna and Sava rivers, in the north of present-day Bosnia and... more »
'Game Of Thrones' Star Opens Up About The Scene That Enraged Everybody
*David Hookstead* *Security, * Emilia Clarke is apparently okay with the way Daenerys went out in the “Game of Thrones” series finale. Emilia Clarke is apparently okay with the way Daenerys went out in the “Game of Thrones” series finale. Daenerys was stabbed to death by her former lover Jon Snow, and I think a lot of people were upset with how things went down. Despite all of the criticism of the scene, which Clarke called “poetic and beautiful,” she’s sounds more than fine with it. Clarke told The New Yorker the following when asked if she wanted a more triumphant end for Dae... more »
Tale of the Tape: Sig Sauer's P320 vs. Glock's 19 (Which Is the Better Gun?)
*Gun News Daily* *Security, * You decide. *So if you want more power than the 9mm Glock can offer, go for the Sig. If you still want to go for the Glock 19, you might be looking for a Glock holster.* One of the most common questions we get asked here at GND is whether you should buy a Glock 19 or a Sig P320. Both are great guns, of course, as proven by their loyal followings, but there seems to be no real consensus on which is the best. In some ways, the story of the Sig P320 is a strange one. When it was released, nobody really paid it any attention. It was just another 9mm h... more »
Labor Income For Top 0.1% Exceeds Income from Capital
How important is human capital at the top of the U.S. income distribution? Using tax data linking 11 million firms to their owners, this paper finds that entrepreneurs are key for understanding top income inequality. Most top income is non-wage income, a primary source of which is private “pass-through” business profit. Eric Voegelin: Economics with a Moral Grounding
Methodology is not a value-free tool in economic analysis, leading some to conclude economics itself cannot be a value free science. On the Hazards of Ignoring Hazlitt
This *Guardian* article is better than 16 years-old. It concerns William Hazlitt, the English-Irish polemicist who, like Charles Lamb, Leigh Hunt and Charles Hamilton Reynolds, decades ago provided merely a marginal presence in my youthful studies in the 70's & 80's in the life & work of John Keats that accounted for the bulk of my English literature scholarship in my late teens-early 20's. Reading this old article from 16+ years ago was, in a way, almost like a homecoming for me. Like a tragically huge number of us, I'd neglected Hazlitt whose star has faded in proximity to t... more »
