How One Army Special Forces Family Is Preparing for Their Next Deployment (To Space)

Task and Purpose at The National Interest - 9 hours ago
*Task and Purpose* *Security, Americas* [image: (1st Lt. Andrew "Drew" Morgan, an emergency physician with the Army Special Forces, were living at Fort Belvoir in Virginia when he came home and told her that NASA had opened up applications for astronauts. America Must Not Stumble into a Third Gulf War

John Dale Grover at The National Interest - 9 hours ago
*John Dale Grover* *Security, Middle East* [image: Reuters] Iran is a threat, but not one that requires another costly war. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo claims that Washington is not interested in war with Iran. However, America has ordered all U.S. nonemergency staff and families out of neighboring Iraq. In addition, a recent report by the *New York Times* said that the Pentagon was given plans to deploy 120,000 troops to the Middle East in the event of a crisis. Given that America previously sent 125,000 soldiers to invade Iraq in 2003, it seems unlikely that a similar numbe... more »

*Daniel Di Martino* *Security, Americas* [image: Reuters] About 90 percent of Venezuelans support military action to save their country. Venezuela’s National Assembly (VNA) has formally started the procedure to rejoin the Rio Treaty, an international pact that would give legal ground to regional military action to oust dictator Nicolas Maduro from power. It’s a wise move since Venezuela’s democratic leaders want to save millions of citizens from famine and despair, but they must not stop there. Russia is Finally Getting the 'Great Power' Talks That It Always Wanted

*Nikolas K. Let’s dispense with any talk that U.S.-Russia relations are on the verge of any reset. The Winds Of Change

Owen Gray at Northern Reflections - 14 hours ago
In Britain, the winds of change are blowing. Climate change has become an urgent issue. John Vidal writes: The last few months have seen the debate shift. Put it down to David Attenborough’s documentary, 1.5 million children on school strike, the charisma of Greta Thunberg, or sheer frustration with the political system, but increasing numbers of people now seem to recognise that nature’s wellbeing is a national priority. The UK government, keen to position itself as a world leader on climate, but still promoting flying and roads and less keen to act at home, recognises the momen... more »

Does Trump represent the end of the Reagan regime, or the beginning of something far more dangerous?

JB at Balkinization - 14 hours ago
In today's New York Times, Tom Edsall gives an outstanding summary of the academic debate over whether Donald Trump is a disjunctive president, or something far more dangerous. His column includes quotes from Theda Skocpol, Steven Levitsky, Daniel Ziblatt, Julia Azari, Scott Lemieux, and, of course, Stephen Skowronek himself. Most of the commentators argue that Trump does not fit well into Skowronek's model of presidential leadership, and that he raises distinctive dangers of authoritarianism that we simply have not seen in the past. Azari and Lemieux argue that we may be headed int... more »

Watch Out, U.S. Navy: China Has 650 "Vessels with Military Capabilities"

David Axe at The National Interest - 15 hours ago
*David Axe* *Security, * Yikes. *America's allies contribute their own forces to international efforts to manage China's rise as a military power. But that doesn't mean the United States shouldn't reconsider its own strategy in light of China's numerical advantage at sea.* The Chinese fleet is much bigger than most people think. And that should compel the United States to reconsider its Pacific maritime strategy, one expert argued. *(This first appeared in January.)* The People's Liberation Army Navy by 2020 will possess between 313 and 342 warships, the U.S. Office of Naval ... more »

Russia Might Take the Biggest Submarine Ever and Add 200 Cruise Missiles

Sebastien Roblin at The National Interest - 15 hours ago
*Sebastien Roblin* *Security, * Or is this just a bluff? *Thus, while the idea of Russia reviving its cold war leviathans sounds compellingly scary, there’s evidence it makes little practical or financial sense given more cost-efficient and survivable means to achieve the same ends. It could also be the project is being trumpeted for the propagandistic symbolism behind deploying super-submarines that are larger and carry more missiles than their American counterparts.* On April 20, 2019, Russia’s TASS Agency reported that Vice Admiral Oleg Burtsev announced Russia’s intention t... more »

Surplus and Deficit: Resources of Legitimation in the “Crisis of Democracy”

For the symposium on Sanford Levinson and Jack M. Balkin, Democracy and Dysfunction (University of Chicago Press, 2019). Jedediah Britton-Purdy[*] This long post sketches two thoughts prompted by time with the wide-ranging, provocative, and fecund letters that make up *Democracy and Dysfunction*. The first thought is that U.S. politics exhibits a *surplus* of claims to political authority--the right to rule. I suggest that this surplus is both a worse thing than many constitutional commentators have supposed and a specific detriment to majoritarian democracy, which may itself be a ... more »
