"Facts and Opinions Are Not Contraries"
*"Facts and Opinions Are Not Contraries"* by Michael Prinzing "The fact that an opinion has been widely held is no evidence whatever that it is not utterly absurd." - Bertrand Russell “Fact vs opinion” is not like “hot vs cold” or “fast vs slow”. Facts and opinions are different kinds of things. I teach philosophy to undergraduate students, mostly freshman and sophomores, at UCLA. I’ve been puzzled and slightly disturbed by a recurring idea that some of them seem to take for granted. This is the idea that claims about (say) what would be just, or what we ought to do, are merely ma... more »

Sorry kids — The next energy alternative is not here, yet
BY RON STEIN: Until we find that alternate energy, the magical elixir that replaces current reliable energy sources, we will have to admit EVERY industry and infrastructure that relies on energy from the deep earth minerals/fuels to “move things and make thousands of products” in support of global economies are increasing their usage each year of those energy sources, not decreasing it. Kim's Old War Machine: North Korea Has Thousands of Ancient Tanks
*Kyle Mizokami* *Security, Asia* A threat or a joke? *Although very obsolete, Chonma-ho likely still serves as the mainstay of the North Korean armored force. Bermudez estimated in 2010 that Pokpung-ho tanks served only in the 105th Seoul Guards Armored Division. North Korea’s poor economy, a shift in priorities from conventional to nuclear arms, and now the use of the Ryu-Kyong Su tank factory to develop and produce missile TELs will all cut into conventional tank production. It is likely even the 820th Corps is only partially equipped with the newer Pokpung-ho.* For decades, ... more »

When the Oakland teachers walked out, there was some question about what TFAers should or should not do. A previous open letter from TFA alumni suggested that guidance from TFA leadership was that honoring a strike would cost the TFA members. TFA was quick to say, "No, they should totally follow their conscience, and that the striking penalty is part of Americorps policy.
