Is Section 215 No Longer Worth the Effort?
Last week, reports surfaced from the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal that the NSA may be shutting down the Section 215 program accessing domestic call detail records (CDRs). Asaf Lubin and I have been researching the program in light of the sunsetting of the USA Freedom Act later this year—and while we hadn't anticipated that the NSA might close down the program entirely, we are not entirely surprised. Controversy about the program was high, making it politically expensive to maintain. As Lubin and I examined the program, we became convinced that due to changes in techn... more »

At the gym
I used to write a blog about the people I met in coffee shops. But I gave it up—going to coffee shops. Now I go to the gym and I see a lot of interesting people, and even talk to some, although I rarely know their names. Today on the next exercycle there was a woman who is an immigrant. We’ve chatted numerous times. She goes to her “home” country for 5 months of the year, but her adult children were born in the U.S. “I’m very close to my children,” she told me today. “We talk first thing in the morning, and later maybe 8-9 times.” I would like to think I misunderstood that, ... more »
Movie night
We don’t see a lot of movies. The last time we went to a theater, it was sold out on-line, not only for that showing, but the next. But our daughter recommended a movie when we went out for dinner Friday night, and since I was picking up some books at the library yesterday, I looked for it. So last night we watched the movie, "Chef," which although it has an awful lot of food prep and f-words in it, is a wonderful story about a boy and his relationship with his divorced dad. Well worth your time. Also a lot about social media, which the son knows how to do, and dad doesn’t. htt... more »

Two Theories of Politics: Zero-Sum vs. Self-Reinforcing Change
The FT's Edward Luce recently judged that “America’s intellectual energy is now on the left.” With light comes heat, and there are vigorous debates among progressives on fundamental questions in tech, health, employment, energy, and finance policy. I am less concerned about the in-fighting than about the outdated theories of political change it sometimes presumes. A broad popular front united against Trumpist patrimonialism may fragment if too many within it are committed to too narrow an approach to policy. I’ll give two examples of this danger, while explaining a theory of politica... more »

The Next Financial Asset Crisis

I have posted on this subject before, however, the recent analysis by the OECD suggests that the economy could be on the cusp of another financial crisis. Let's open with this table from Investopedia which shows the bond rating systems for both Moody's and S&P/Fitch: If a company's credit rating falls below a rating of BBB or Baa, the grade of its debt changes from investment quality to junk status.
