Sour & Hot Korea… and Two Scoops of Crazy. And a Democratic ‘civil war’?
Today we’ll offer up a firm *prediction about the “Korea Mess,”* that no one else out there has offered. (That I know of.) *But first:* *== What ‘struggle for the Democratic soul?’ ==* The worst thing that Americans - (the “Union” side of this phase of the Civil War) - can do is let Confederate/ Kremlin/Fox provocateurs divide us again. They are trying to incite a “fight over the soul of the Democratic Party.” A struggle that’s 99% illusory. Read this incredible piece showing that Blue America is hardly divided at all, when it comes to actual issues and policies. In The New York T... more »

Sent by Carol who is 2 years younger
I found this timely, because today I was in a store that sells sunglasses, and only sunglasses. A young lady walks over to me and asks, "What brings you in today?" I looked at her, and said, "I'm interested in buying a refrigerator.” She didn't quite know how to respond. Am I getting to be that age? I was thinking about how a status symbol of today is those cell phones that everyone has clipped onto their belt or purse. I can't afford one. So I'm wearing my garage door opener. There were 4 cars broken into at the fitness center on Henderson Rd. this morning sometime between 6 and 7. Ladies and gentlemen, why do you leave purses, cameras, computers, etc. in your locked car? Just leave the car unlocked--save the insurance problems. There are wonderful lockers inside. Gavin Newsom Will Probably Win But Here's Why I'm Voting For Antonio Villaraigosa
*Governor?* 9 or 10 years ago, Gavin Newsom, Mayor or ex-Mayor of San Francisco, invited a gaggle of Los Angeles political bloggers to meet him in a rented conference room of a fancy West Hollywood hotel. I had the impression everyone was impressed besides me-- and even I was a little impressed. He was really smart and was able to speak way more intelligently than most politicians can on every single subject every blogger threw at him. If smarts alone was the only criterion to back a candidate, I might have gotten behind him instead of Jerry Brown. But it isn't... and I didn't. He ... more »

Hardt and Negri on Social Production
Today, production is increasingly social in a double sense: on one hand, people produce ever more socially, in networks of cooperation and interaction; and, on the other, the result of production is not just commodities but social relations and ultimately society itself. This double terrain of social production is where the talents and capacities of people to organise and rule themselves are nurtured and revealed, but it is also where the most important challenges and the most severe forms of domination facing the multitude are in play, including the ruling mechanisms of finance, mo... more »

BWorld 216, Positive and negative disruptions in the electricity market
* This is my article in BusinessWorld last Monday, May 28, 2018. Last week, May 22, a BusinessWorld report said “DoE forecast for peak power demand exceeded on May 17” referring to 10,688 MW peak demand in the Luzon grid on May 17 reported by the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) vs peak demand in 2017 of 10,054 MW. The increase of 634 MW or 6.3% increase can be considered as positive disruption. Demand for electricity to power various economic activities by households and corporations including those with 24/7 operations remains high and they approximate GDP growth. Re... more »

Tax Cut 32, Rene Azurin on zero income tax
I am reposting this column 11 years ago by a friend, former UP CBA Prof., Dr. Rene Azurin. Rene has published several books. He mentioned me and Vernie Atienza here. Enjoy. BusinessWorld, July 12, 2007 STRATEGIC PERSPECTIVE René B. Azurin *Zero income tax* 'Zero income tax' has a nice melodic sound. It produces in me the same resonant vibrations as Toyota's 'zero defect' production system and the environmentalist movement's 'zero waste' program. So, given the current hoohah over the BIR's latest failure to meet its tax collection targets, it seems timely to propose that hard-to-col... more »

China vs. America: 3 Ways a War in the South China Sea Could Start
*Robert Farley* *Security, * Who wins? *Many analysts are arguing that the PLAN needs to push its submarines past the first island chain in order to seriously threaten U.S. access to China’s littoral. Preparing for this would require increasing the tempo of the PLAN’s submarine operations, which would more often put China’s boats in proximity with Japanese and American subs. To be sure, Chinese submarines are loud enough that U.S. boats should have plenty of time to get out of their way, but the same could be said of Soviet boats for much of the Cold War.* It’s easy to imagi... more »

Summary: Circuit Split on Device Searches at the Border in US v. Touset
More and more federal courts are confronting the question whether the government’s traditional authority to search persons and property at the border—without a warrant, and typically without any degree of individualized suspicion—extends to travelers’ electronic devices. Two circuits, the fourth and the ninth, have concluded that investigators need at least reasonable suspicion to conduct forensic device searches in light of the stark privacy interests at stake—interests the Supreme Court recognized in *Riley v. California*. On May 23, the Eleventh Circuit rejected that approach, ... more »

The word “culture” has lost its authority because it is now burdened with meanings for which there are several other words. The intellectuals tend to conjure fictitious mini-cultures which exists within the society or civilization. Here’s an exc... more »

Is criminal violence in America's largest cities being deliberately under-reported?
I'm more and more getting the impression that it is. It's not just that police departments are under political pressure to under-report crime, or wrongly classify more serious offenses under less serious codes: it's that the news media, nominally independent, are nevertheless deliberately under-reporting the crime situation as well, if not completely ignoring it, in blatant support of an ideological agenda.
