*"Peace Comes to Korea: Let’s Understand Why"* by David Swanson "When peace shows its face, and weapons companies’ stocks plummet, we have to do more than just cheer. We have to avoid misunderstanding where peace comes from. We have to recognize the forces that want to destroy it. We have to work to make it last and expand. There’s something very twisted about the belief that the primary cause of tension between the United States and North Korea is what has reduced tension there. Dope Didn't Bother to Consult First Nations Re Dope Legislation
*Cannabis* I have spoken up many times on this blog about my opposition to the Trudeau Jr's government upcoming legalization of marijuana in Canada. It appears I am a small, actually microscopic, minority that maintains that the negatives far outweigh any positives that will come out of this legislation. Blood Is A Terrible Food Source - Yet Vampire Bats Thrive On It. Here's Why.
It sounds gross to humans - unless you read those "Twilight" books in which case maybe it's sexy - but a lot of animals consume blood. That's right, even your cat familiar. The question is why? Blood is actually a poor source of energy. It consists of 78 percent liquid and what is left is 93 percent proteins and only one percent carbohydrates (1). Blood provides very little in the way of vitamins. Not only that, a blood-based diet exposes animals to blood-borne pathogens. And yet some bat species (order *Chiroptera*) feed exclusively on blood and have managed to survive evolution... more »

Setting a Perjury Trap for Trump
*by Gaius Publius* A "perjury trap" is a prosecutorial maneuver and a form of entrapment in which "a prosecutor calls a witness to testify with the intent to base a perjury charge on their statements, not to indict them for a previous crime." If a prosecutor calls a witness for only that purpose, rather than to get information to further an investigation, the law is clear — it's forbidden. Perjury traps are most easily executed when the prosecutor has prior knowledge of the matter about which the witness is questioned but doesn't reveal having that knowledge. In practice perjury... more »
Forget North Korea: South Korea Could Someday Have Submarines Armed with Nuclear Weapons
*Kyle Mizokami* *Security, * What would Pyongyang think? *South Korea’s rapid submarine buildup has developed a capable undersea force with nearly as many hulls as Japan. Construction of the latest generation submarines will provide the country with a fleet of powerful, flexible submarines capable of performing traditional attack submarine duties—and perhaps the job of nuclear deterrence.* One of the most underreported aspects of the Republic of Korea (ROK) armed forces is its submarine force. Illinois: Talk about a hidden debt bomb!
In the past, I've written about the debt incurred by State governments, with particular reference to Illinois. Now comes news that the "visible" debt in that State may be matched by a similar amount held by school boards - but *not listed with other State debts*. Illinoisans hear plenty about the state’s ballooning pension debt, its billions in unpaid bills and rising bond debts. In fact, many even know about the local pension crises playing out in cities like Harvey and North Chicago. But most don’t know that the state’s 860 school districts have put Illinoisans on the hook for ...more »

That was down from 3.453 million in March. April had the lowest amount since September’s 3.24 million. Maintenance work at the loading terminals in Basra were the cause for the drop. Nietzsche on What Preserves the Species
Friedrich Nietzsche believed that *evil* is as vital for human flourishing as *good*. The fear of the evil prevents men from becoming complacent and lazy; it inspires them to develop better ideas and undertake powerful actions to subdue the forces of evil. When men are confronted by a great evil they have to fight with every means that is available to them—either they subdue the evil force or their society dies. The death of a weak society is a good thing because it frees up the space and resources for a better society to emerge. Here’s an interesting passage from Nietzsche’s *The ... more »

On Sean Hannity's show last night, new Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani said something it appeared he shouldn't have said: In one of his first interviews since joining Mr. Trump’s legal team, Mr. Giuliani appeared to briefly stun Sean Hannity of Fox News on Wednesday night by asserting that the president had reimbursed his personal lawyer for a $130,000 hush payment to a pornographic film actress — contradicting his client, the president. “I want to clarify something,” Mr. Hannity said, offering a do-over to Mr. Giuliani, the former mayor of New York, failed presidential candidate and lo... more »

The Problem with Guns
When you think about it, guns have been a problem for despots ever since people switched from swords, spears and archery to gunpowder. They provide the common man with the means of self defense and a hedge against tyranny. *This day in history* marks the infamous "Gunpowder Incident". The incident and the conflict was created by guns, ammunition . . . and a British attempt to confiscate them. You see, while the ownership of firearms by the local colonists didn't cause any specific problem for the British, the effort to seize them inevitably did.
