From Bernays to Trump, Hooked on Misery

Colin Todhunter at EAST BY NORTHWEST - 11 hours ago
CounterPunch, Global Research, RINF, Countercurrents The father of modern public relations and spin, Edward Bernays was a cold, cynical manipulator of mass perception. He knew that by shaping people’s desires in a certain way, governments and corporations could sell just about any notion to the masses and manipulate them at will. Whether it was whipping up fear about the bogeyman of communism or selling the ‘American Dream’ of happiness through consuming goods, Bernays and the public relations/advertising industry, which took its cue from him, did exactly that. Bernays was an expe... more »

Role of The Spectator in Kantian Philosophy

Anoop Verma at The Verma Report - 11 hours ago
Immanuel Kant placed great value in the judgement of a spectator. In *The Critique of Judgement* he talks about the “sublime” side of war, the romantic feats of courage, which, he holds, cannot be visible to those who are directly participating in the war and can only be perceived by the spectators who are looking keenly and analyzing critically from a distance. In his own life, Kant was mostly a spectator and critical thinker. His critical thinking was a solitary business, but it was not cut off from those from whom he expected inputs. His critical thinking and analysis was based ... more »

The Executive Branch's Extraordinarily Broad View of the Presidential Pardon Power

Article II gives the president the “Power to grant Reprieves and Pardons for Offenses against the United States, except in Cases of Impeachment.” There has long been speculation that President Trump may exercise this power to pardon some of the Russia investigation characters, including Michael Flynn, Paul Manafort, Michael Cohen, Jared Kushner, and possibly even himself. The pardon power is among the broadest of presidential powers. Another cost that's killing US military budgets

Peter at Bayou Renaissance Man - 14 hours ago
Next Big Future has an interesting article comparing purchase and operating costs of US Air Force and US Navy combat aircraft. Among its features was this graphic (click it for a larger view). If you do a little basic arithmetic, you find that the cost of buying, say, an F-35 (as cited in the article) will be matched by its operating costs within less than half the aircraft's expected service lifespan - less, if inflation drives up those operating costs (as it almost certainly will). Therefore, even after the aircraft have been bought, their ever higher operating costs will co... more »

*"Affirmative Action and the American Mind: If Any”* by Fred Reed “Affirmative action” means hiring people because they can’t do the job well. Near-synonyms are “diversity,” meaning groups that cannot do the job well, and “inclusiveness,” which means seeking people who you know cannot do the job well. These underpin American society, and have ruined education. For some time the sciences seemed less susceptible to the prevailing enstupidation because mathematics would present an impenetrable barrier to the the insufficiently bright. This, astonishingly, is changing. The sciences ar... more »

2 Big Reasons the Navy Misses the F-14 Tomcat (Thanks to China and Russia)

The United States Navy retired the venerable Grumman F-14 Tomcat in 2006 after more than three decades in service. However, the Tomcat’s demise has left gaps in the carrier air wing that are only now being felt. With the end of the Cold War and declining budgets, the Navy simply could not afford to keep the incredibly maintenance intensive and unreliable Tomcat on the carrier flight deck. VOTER TURNOUT IS EVERYTHING The largest political party in...

Robert Reich - 1 day ago
*VOTER TURNOUT IS EVERYTHING * The largest political party in America isn’t the Democratic Party or the Republican Party. It’s the Party of Non-Voters. 94 million Americans who were eligible to vote in the 2016 election didn’t vote. That’s a bigger number than the number who voted either for Trump or for Clinton. All of which means that voter *turnout* will determine who wins control of Congress next November, and who becomes president in 2020. Turnout is everything. This is why it’s so important for *you* to vote – and urge everyone you know to vote, too.

Open Roads and Overflowing Jails

Content Multimedia - 1 day ago
By Marc Levin, Michael Haugen The pretrial population of defendants has significantly increased—particularly in rural areas of the country. Jails in smaller jurisdictions are responsible for an outsized share of jail population growth. Indeed, from 1970 to 2014, jail populations grew by almost sevenfold in small counties but only threefold in large counties. This paper explores why this growth may have occurred and makes numerous recommendations reducing pretrial populations, particularly in rural America.
