A simple Dow Jones targeting monetary policy

Luboš Motl at The Reference Frame - 2 minutes ago
For some two years, the world's stock markets have enjoyed a calm era with a seemingly healthy growth. The volatility was almost zero and the positive returns looked as safe as if you buy the Bitcoin. OK, this calm era ended abruptly when the stock market indices saw a terrible week, with at least two days of 4-5 percent drops per ... more »

Dan Canon, Bernie Sander, Marijuana And You (And Me)

Dan Canon is a brilliant, albeit modest and self-effacing guy. He's one of the very best candidates for Congress I've met in years. And, as you may have read here back in December, he's running on a platform that includes marijuana legalization-- in a district that Trump won 61.1-34.2% (albeit a district where Bernie crush Hillary). Tuesday James Higdon featured Dan in his *Politico* feature, These Red-State Democrats Think Legal Marijuana Can Help Them Win. The DC Establishment has some fake garden variety Democrat running against Dan in the primary. She's winning inside the Belt... more »

The Gilded Monument to Journalistic Vanity Crumbles Before Us

Diogenes Sarcastica™ at Diogenes' Middle Finger - 10 hours ago
There was a time when the American News Media was who most of the world looked to for the best example of unvarnished truth as could be had. But then came the advent of 24 Hr. news broadcast and with it the rise of the overly self-important media reporters, high payed on-air talking heads celebrities and an undeniable political bias. So when we see such arrogant people who deem themselves higher then us because they, and they only hold the cup of truth, can we not feel a bit triumphant when they stumble and fall into a pile of their own excrement? I personally can't interpret this latest report any other way. * *Clear, concise, aggressive and boastful. * *Yesterday:* US Special Forces "Very Proud" of Occupying Syria- Blunt Warning to Turkey *“We’re very p... more »

Feb. 8: Day of Rage

Graeme Decarie at The Decarie Report - 10 hours ago
The U.S. took its time about getting into both world wars. Of course. Nations don't go to war unless there's something in it for the economic leaders of those nations. The U.S. didn't declare war until 1917 in World War 1. Obviously, it felt no great concern for Britain and France. Similarly, it waited until the end of 1942 to declare war in world war 2. Why the delay? The U.S. didn't care much about what Hitler did in Europe. (Indeed, major American companies like Ford were) selling war equipment to Hitler right up to the American declaration of war - and even after.) No. What brou... more »

I'm grateful for Jennifer Rubin's high level of outrage at Donald Trump and the people who back him. But does it really surprise her that religious-right groups were silent when they learned that White House aide Rob Porter is a spousal abuser? Appearing on CNN’s “New Day,” Sen. Jon Tester (D-Mont.) was blunt about the Rob Porter issue. “I have no use for anybody who beats their spouse,” he said....
