White House officials saw the Florida school shooting as a "reprieve" from their constant concern about the Russia investigations and talk about Trump's extramarital affairs.
Courtesy of WaPo: *The White House was under siege. * *Domestic abuse allegations against a senior aide were ignored, pointing to a potential high-level coverup. Two Cabinet secretaries were caught charging taxpayers for luxury travel. A Playboy centerfold alleged an extramarital affair with the president. And the special counsel’s Russia investigation was intensifying. The tumult was so intense that there was fervent speculation that President Trump might fire his chief of staff. * *But a gun massacre at a Florida high school last Wednesday, which left 17 dead, seemed to shift t... more »
Turkey Warns Syria To Not Aid The Kurds In The Afrin Region, And Has Started Shelling Approaching Syrian Forces
*BBC:* *Syria war: Pro-government forces enter Kurdish-held Afrin* Syrian pro-government forces have entered the Kurdish-held area of Afrin to confront what state media called "aggression by the Turkish regime". The government was asked to send forces by a Kurdish militia that has been trying to repel an offensive by Turkish troops and allied Syrian rebels. Photos showed "Popular Forces" fighters passing through a checkpoint in armoured vehicles and pick-up trucks. Shortly afterwards, Turkish forces reportedly shelled the area. In 1963, a Navy Submarine Sank Mysteriously. How the Crew Died Is Horrifying.
*Kyle Mizokami* *Security, * It led to big changes for the U.S. Navy. *The U.S. Navy immediately moved to prevent such as tragedy from happening again. Less than two months later it created SUBSAFE, a program designed to ensure the structural integrity of submarine hulls at pressure and, if an emergency occurred, ensure that the submarine could safely surface. North Korea’s Tunnel Network Is Impressive (But Not Invulnerable)
*Asia Times* *Security, Asia* Here is how America could even the fight with Pyongyang. A recent article described a newly noted but apparently abandoned railroad tunnel in North Korea, located near Dancheon on the east coast roughly midway between Hamhung and Chongjin. It could be used for raising mushrooms (yes, seriously), document storage or military use – nobody really knows. The lack of information regarding military usage cries out for discussion, for North Korea has used tunnels and other underground structures for a multitude of military and civil-defense purposes for dec... more »
Did a Russian Built Stealth Submarine 'Sink' a Navy Nuclear Attack Sub?
*Dave Majumdar* *Security, * Fact or fiction? *While diesel-electric boats are generally quieter than nuclear submarines, the U.S. Navy prefers atomic powered vessels because of their range, speed and endurance. The U.S. Navy’s global mission essentially mandates a vessel that can operate independently far from home waters for extended periods. Navies with a more localized mission can afford to operate short-range diesel-electric boats. While the Indian report may or may not be correct, this incident highlights the need to completely replace the Los Angeles-class with Virginia-... more »
FACT: A Submarine vs. Submarine Battle Only Happened Once
*Sebastien Roblin* *Security, * Despite all the money spent and articles written. *More than a half century later later, the wreck of U-864 was found in 2003 by the Norwegian Navy, two miles off Fedje. It was discovered that the cargo of poisonous liquid mercury had been slowly seeping from the flasks into the surrounding ocean. After spending fifteen years evaluating the risks of raising the wreck and its dangerous, unexploded torpedoes, in February 2017 the Norwegian government finally “entombed” the broken submarine with a half-meter of sand and 160,000 tons of rocks to preve... more »
Is China Really Threatening America with Nuclear Weapons?
*Asia Times* *Security, Asia* Disarmament critics slam Trump’s new expansionist nuclear policy. China, according to the Federation of American Scientists, has 270 warheads in its nuclear arsenal. The Washington-based research group’s estimate has never been challenged by the Pentagon. It compares with an official tally of 4,480 nuclear warheads for the US. Unlike the American side, China also renounces “first use” of nuclear weapons and holds that its ability to retaliate is sufficient to deter attack. Why, then, is Beijing’s modernization of its nuclear arsenal — something tha... more »

United States Housing Affordability - Demographia's 2018 Edition
While news about the U.S. housing market has been relegated to the back pages of the business section of American online and print news services, there are still some interesting developments that are worth further examination, particularly in some markets. While housing prices have recovered from the catastrophically low levels that were experienced during the Great Recession, some markets are showing signs of, once again, being severely overvalued, an issue that first occurred in the mid-2000s. As I have done for the past few years, this posting will take a look at the most rece... more »

THE THUMB-ON-THE-SCALE BOTHSIDERISM OF DAVID BROOKS
The group Better Angels, which is praised by David Brooks in his latest column, operates on the naive belief that if liberals and conservatives engage in dialogue, we'll be able to break partisan gridlock and solve America's problems. It's possible that the dialogue sessions Better Angels conducts make the participants better able to listen and more empathetic. But even if the Better Angels diagnosis is correct, how would we compel every partisan American, or even a critical mass, to participate in such sessions? And if we did, how long would it be before the empathy wore off? And i... more »
Rob Mercer and the Black Vault
I learned this morning (February 19) that many of the documents from the Project Blue Book days located by Rob Mercer through some very nice detective work, can now be accessed at the Black Vault, hosted by John Greenewald. As most of you know, the Black Vault is a huge site of documents recovered through FOIA John Greenewald (Photo copyright by Kevin Randle)requests filed by John, and other documents provided by those who had recovered them in the past… which is to say, I suppose, that it is a huge sharing site that provides an important feature for those of us interested in UFOs i... more »
Book Review: Timothy Morton’s Humankind Solidarity with Nonhuman People
Ethical Technology - 19 hours ago
A new book by Timothy Morton, Humankind: Solidarity with Nonhuman People, is reviewed. Humankind: Solidarity with Nonhuman People is a project into the applied political ethics that emerge between speculative realism and Marxism. This book is intended to build on the object-oriented ontology that Morton has espoused in previous volumes, however with a greater emphasis on normative politics. The book’s core methodology is to outline the various neologisms that Morton employs and incorporate those speculative realist terms into a retooling of Marxist. The book dialogue prose is a po... more »

*Which one's the Democrat and which one's the Republican?* As you've probably noticed, I think Conor Lamb's campaign is a train wreck. From the very first time we looked at that PA-18 special election race, we realized that the *only* path to victory would be to get union members and union retirees to turn out for him, the way African Americans turned out-- massively-- for Doug Jones in Alabama. But Lamb's taking union voters for granted and whatever enthusiasm anyone once expected is virtually non-existent. Apple Mac: lessons learned (so far) and questions
We run Windows 10 on most of Miss D.'s and my computers, except for one creaky 11-year-old laptop on which I've just loaded Linux Mint, to see whether it can be kept going for a year or two longer (doubtful - it's very slow). I'm about to buy Vellum, a program that offers very easy and attractive pre-publication formatting of books. Unfortunately, it only runs on Apple's Mac computer series, so I've got to get my hands on one. The software is good enough that I'm willing to make that outlay - but I can't afford a new, top-of-the line system. My budget isn't that large. Several ... more »
