three years in that same period. Those numbers are according to data

Retire B-2 And B-1 Bombers Early Is A Good One*
*The flying service is making the right sacrifices to ensure the B-21
Raider gets fielded in large numbers while making the B-52 all it can be.*
If you are a military aviation aficionado, or even interested in military
technology at all, the Air Force's new plan to retire both the swing-wing
B-1B "Bone" and the B-2A "Spirit" earlier than originally planned is
probably going to be upsetting t... more »
A conference on teaching of mathematics
Luboš Motl at The Reference Frame - 10 hours ago
I just returned from a day-long conference called "New Teaching Methods in
Mathematics?" that was primarily dedicated to an explosive phenomenon in
the Czech basic schools, the so-called Hejný's method to teach mathematics (TRF
texts on Hejný).
Most people believe that the method is named after Prof Milan Hejný who was
recently celebrating his 80th birthday – as he reminded us several times –
but it's actually named after his father who has taught his son Milan how
to love mathematics. This gospel is being used by 700 out of 4,100 basic
schools in Czechia and worshiped by virtually ... more »

2019 Military Budget: Pentagon Wins, American Taxpayers Lose
Daniel McAdams at - 10 hours ago
President Trump has delivered his military budget request for 2019 that
increases spending by 12 percent over 2017 spending. Designed to fully fund
a "depleted" military, even Defense Secretary Mattis was surprised at the
figures. Many more warships, many more F-22s (even though they don't work).
Half a billion more dollars to continue the US "regime change" operation in
Syria. There's something in it for everybody...except the American people.
How this massive spending increase makes us less safe and less free in

This is The Orwellian Environment That Gave Us CAGW; Identity Politics and Consensus Don’t Belong in Science
co2islife at CO2 is Life - 10 hours ago
And, sure enough, the whole concept of an individual who exists apart from
group identity is slipping from the discourse. The idea of individual merit
— as opposed to various forms of unearned “privilege” — is increasingly
suspect. The Enlightenment principles that formed the bedrock of the
American experiment — untrammeled free speech, due process, … Continue

Isolating the Contribution of CO2 on Atmospheric Temperature
co2islife at CO2 is Life - 10 hours ago
In any serious scientific experiment, efforts are made to “control” for as
many exogenous factors as possible. The whole purpose is to isolate the
impact of the independent variable on the dependent variable. ΔWeightloss =
ΔCaloric Intake + ΔExercise + error. To minimize the error of the model
(maximize explanatory power), variables outside the model

ATHENS/ANKARA (Reuters) - Greece complained to Turkey on Tuesday that a
Turkish vessel had collided with a Greek coastguard boat off disputed

The Greek coastguard said in a statement that the incident took place off

A Turkish patrol vessel “made some risky maneuvers” striking the left side
of the Greek coast guard vessel patrolling the area, and damaging it. There

Another sly trick: the Quibble Method - and cornering reality
David Brin at CONTRARY BRIN - 11 hours ago
Last time, I appraised three of the magical incantations that are used in
the War on Science -- and against every fact-using profession -- in order
to discredit all the folks who actually know stuff, while pretending to
sound logical. We need to understand these cheats at their most basic
level, in order to fight back against weapons-of-darkness.
An example from last time: we all know that: *"Just being smart and knowing
stuff doesn't automatically make you wise."*
Alas, the extrapolation -- never spoken explicitly, but slyly and
relentlessly implied on Fox and every confederate med... more »
THE POLLING FOR REPUBLICANS IS BETTER, BUT IT'S STILL BAD

There are a couple of new polls out today. One seems like good news for the
GOP:
Republicans have erased the Democratic advantage on the generic
congressional ballot in a new POLITICO/Morning Consult poll that, for the
first time since April, also shows President Donald Trump’s approval rating
equaling the percentage of voters who disapprove of his job performance.
Fully 39 percent of registered voters say they would support the GOP
candidate for Congress in their district, while 38 percent would back the
Democratic candidate. Nearly a quarter of voters, 23 percent, are

*WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 14, 2018The New York Times' latest sad mess:* Did it
all start with Richard M. Nixon? Is that when the press corps decided that
its sole mission was reporting on the "character" of major pols, narrowly
conceived, with no bullsh*t left behind?
We don't know how to answer your question. But by 1987, major reporters
were staking out Candidate Hart, overnight, trying to see if he (gasp!) had
a girl friend. Around that same time, they started calling around to old
college roommates, trying to learn if other major candidates had smoked
marijuana as teens.
