"USS Liberty: Dead In The Water"

noreply@blogger.com (Coyote Prime) at Running 'Cause I Can't Fly - 13 hours ago
*"USS Liberty: Dead In The Water" (BBC Documentary 2002)* by David Strader "On June 8th, 1967, during the Six-Day War, Israel attacked and nearly sank the USS Liberty belonging to its closest ally, the USA. Thirty-four American servicemen were killed and over 170 wounded in the two-hour assault by Israeli warplanes and torpedo boats. Israel claimed that the whole affair had been a tragic accident based on mistaken identification of the ship. The American government accepted the explanation. For more than 50 years many people have disbelieved the official explanation but have been... more »

"The Hope Of The Future..."

noreply@blogger.com (Coyote Prime) at Running 'Cause I Can't Fly - 13 hours ago
"That was when it was all made painfully clear to me. When you are a child, there is joy. There is laughter. And most of all, there is trust. Trust in your fellows. When you are an adult...then comes suspicion, hatred, and fear. If children ran the world, it would be a place of eternal bliss and cheer. Adults run the world; and there is war, and enmity, and destruction unending. Adults who take charge of things muck them up, and then produce a new generation of children and say, "The children are the hope of the future." And they are right. Children are the hope of the future. But ... more »

*"Queen and Country, God and Guns"* by Revanchist "Though our stars tend to rise and fall in opposition through the years, your reputation for adventure, fearlessness and a legendary hunger for more lingers, and for the most part we find that admirable - no, more than that - we find it astonishing. We may denigrate your American whisky (as well as your tendency to spell it with the Irish ‘e’) as you joke about our pasty faces and reliance upon dentures but we are cousins - if not always kissing - and share a rich common language, culture, customs and cuisine. "This Is What Happens to Your Brain When You Read Poetry"

noreply@blogger.com (Coyote Prime) at Running 'Cause I Can't Fly - 13 hours ago
*"This Is What Happens to Your Brain When You Read Poetry"* By Cody Delistraty "When I think of poetry that packs a sensory punch - that gives me the chills, that makes my hair stand on end - I think of Rainer Maria Rilke’s “First Elegy.” In particular, I think of these lines: "… For beauty is nothing but the beginning of terror which we are barely able to endure, and it amazes us so, because it serenely disdains to destroy us. Every angel is terrible." The terror Rilke describes here, at least the way I’ve always interpreted it, is the terror of seeing our world from such a removed ... more »

BWorld 135, On reducing the distribution system loss

Nonoy Oplas at Government and Taxes - 13 hours ago
* This is my article in BusinessWorld last Wednesday. When matter changes form, there are certain “system loss” that occur. Like a one-kilo dressed chicken becomes less than one-kilo once it is cooked into adobo or tinola. Or a one-kilo green mango or banana becomes lighter than a kilo when it transforms into ripe, yellow mango or banana after a few days. When electricity is transported or transmitted from a power generation company (genco) some 100+ kilometers away to a private distribution utility (DU) or electric cooperative (EC), there is a transmission system loss. Thus, a 1,... more »

Mosul Campaign Day 234 Jun 7, 2017

Joel Wing at MUSINGS ON IRAQ - 13 hours ago
The heaviest fighting was still in Zinjali in west Mosul. The Iraqi forces gave different figures throughout the day on how much of the neighborhood they held. That ranged from a source that had it at 80%, the Federal Police commander General Raed Shakir Jawadat who had 85%, the Joint Operations Command who claimed 90%, and a Federal Police major who put it at 95%. The Iraqi Security Forces (ISF) have had problems with their numbers for this area for the last several days. Whatever the percentage was it appeared the ISF were on the verge of liberating it. The Three Scenarios For The U.K. Election

War News Updates Editor at War News Updates - 13 hours ago
*Nate Silver and Harry Enten, FiveThiryEight*: *The Three Scenarios For The U.K. Election* On the morning of the U.S. presidential election, we pointed out that there were three scenarios for what might transpire that night, each of which were about equally likely. In Scenario No. 1, the polls would be spot-on; Hillary Clinton would win narrowly, with a 3-to-4 percentage point popular victory and somewhere on the order of 300 electoral votes. In Scenario No. 2, Clinton would outperform her polls, leading to a near-landslide victory and possible wins in states such as Arizona and Ge... more »

What is reality? Nicely done popularization turns into a full-blown crackpottery

Luboš Motl at The Reference Frame - 13 hours ago
Peter F. sent me this 3-months-old 30-minute-long video "What is reality" on the Quantum Gravity Research YouTube channel. It has over 200,000 views. Marion Kerr, who is not only a cute actress but she is clearly also a brain-alive one (at least outside physics), makes the show fun to watch. And for many minutes, I was happy to see that it was a nice introduction to something – namely crystals and quasicrystals (see also Penrose tiles). The viewers were explained something that makes sense: crystals may denote "pretty things" in the everyday life. But in physics, they're somethi... more »

Transport Econ 21, E-trikes halted, P455k each

But for the 3,000 units, since bidding was done and units were already produced by the winning supplier, we’ll go ahead with that – so the canceled loan portion should just be for the 97,000 units,” he explained.* *The energy department, under the past administration, had just been looking at a price point of R150,000 to R200,000 per e-trike, but unfortunately, the cost subsequently ... more »

Number 4 is "out." Back in the early 70s, Kenneth Goldstein published an ethnographic study of counting out rhymes. By extending the rhyme, a clever counter could count out a child other than number 4: (5)My (6)mother (1)says (2)that (3)you (4)are (5)it. Or further: (6)But (1)I (2)say (3)that (4)you (5)are (6)ou... more »

*“Logical Consequences and Conclusions”* Compiled by CP “Logical consequence (also entailment) is one of the most fundamental concepts in logic. It is the relationship between statements that holds true when one logically "follows from" one or more others. Valid logical arguments are ones in which the conclusions follow from its premises, and its conclusions are consequences of its premises. The philosophical analysis of logical consequence involves asking, 'in what sense does a conclusion follow from its premises?' and 'what does it mean for a conclusion to be a consequence of pre... more »

The Deplorable Truth about Decarbonization

Alan Carlin at Carlin Economics and Science - 1 day ago
The deplorable truth is that the Climate Industrial Complex (CIC) is pushing exactly in the wrong direction even if what they advocate were free (which is very very far from being the case). The CIC includes the mainstream media, the Democratic Party (which publicly adopted decarbonization last year as part of its Party platform), the […]

Can Jim Messina's And Señor Trumpanzee's Ineptness Help Jeremy Corbyn Win Tomorrow?

DownWithTyranny at DownWithTyranny! - 1 day ago
Tomorrow is election day in the U.K. And John Nichols thinks you should be as excited as Bernie is about Jeremy Corbyn's anti-austerity campaign. Bernie even went over there to campaign for him, probably hoping Trump would deliver the coup de grâce for the Conservative Party by endorsing Theresa May. Like Bernie, Corbyn "was written off as too far left, and too fiercely opposed to austerity." The same way we have a dominant Republican wing of the Democratic Party here-- the Blue Dogs and New Dems-- muddying up the Democratic brand, over there they have the same garbage, "New Labo... more »

Will Trump and the FCC heal or worsen America's digital divide?

Gregory Porumbescu, Assistant Professor of Public Affairs and Administration, Rutgers University Newark at Science + Technology – The Conversation - 1 day ago
Some Americans have fast internet, but many still lag behind – especially in rural areas. BlueRingMedia via shutterstock.com Many of the Trump administration’s spending priorities seem to be dramatically different from those of past administrations. But at least one, on the surface, appears to have been preserved: expanding access to broadband internet. As far back as 1996, the U.S. federal government has worked, and spent tax dollars, to get all Americans access to high-speed internet service. The effort began under the Clinton administration, and accelerated when George W. Bush’... more »

Air travel exposes you to radiation – how much health risk comes with it?

Timothy J. Jorgensen, Director of the Health Physics and Radiation Protection Graduate Program and Associate Professor of Radiation Medicine, Georgetown University at Science + Technology – The Conversation - 1 day ago
Captain, we're being pummeled by cosmic rays! muratart via Shutterstock.com This past April, business traveler Tom Stuker became the world’s most frequent flyer, logging 18,000,000 miles of air travel on United Airlines over the last 14 years. That’s a lot of time up in the air. If Stuker’s traveling behaviors are typical of other business flyers, he may have eaten 6,500 inflight meals, drunk 5,250 alcoholic beverages, watched thousands of inflight movies and made around 10,000 visits to airplane toilets. He would also have accumulated a radiation dose equivalent to about 1,000 che... more »
