Burundi's Refugee Crisis Is Growing

*Voice of America*:* Fearful Refugees Struggle as Burundi Teeters on Edge of Chaos * *MAHAMA, RWANDA — The white tents stretch almost to the horizon, lined up in neat rows across the red-clay and gnarled-tree landscape of eastern Rwanda, like an army encamped for invasion.* *This, however, is an army of fear and uncertainty: tens of thousands of Burundians who have fled the deepening political chaos in their home country, and created one of Africa’s worst refugee crises.* *Ruth Niyongere is one of at least 27,000 now living at the United Nations-administered camp near the town of... more »

Hung: I can't say that the ROC exists

Michael Turton at The View from Taiwan - 39 minutes ago
[image: DSC07238] *Hung isn't going to be on many local candidate billboards, but the DPP's Tsai Ing-wen is going to become very familiar.* Current KMT presidential candidate Hung Hsiu-chu's Cross-Strait policy is a thing of joy to her opponents. Hung's foreign policy, she explained the other day, is that her One China, same interpretation means that the PRC recognizes the existence of the ROC. Then moments later she said that, well, that would mean a two state existence, which is incompatible with her foreign policy (story). She must be nuts, right? what i'm reading: wild by cheryl strayed, zeitoun by dave eggers

laura k at wmtc - 1 hour ago
I've just finished two truly excellent works of nonfiction: *Wild* and *Zeitoun*. Both books read like fiction, with clean, clear writing and page-turning suspense. Both document almost unbelievable, out-sized events, in one case likely unique, in the other - horribly - anything but. I highly recommend both books. I didn't expect to like *Wild*. Something about the phrase "best-selling memoir" just turns me off. But when the book was chosen as one of my Library's "Raves and Faves," I was intrigued. Those are always excellent books. Flying Saucers and Kenneth Arnold

KRandle at A Different Perspective - 1 hour ago
(Blogger’s Note: Yes, I’ve touched on this before but in the last week or so the MSM, that is to say Time, published a UFO story that made the point that flying saucer was based on an error so of proving there is nothing to the sightings. I thought I’d take another run at this idea.) I have seen recently more suggestions that the term, “Flying Saucer,” is a misnomer because Kenneth Arnold wasn’t describing the shape of the objects he saw but their motion through the air. Reports from June 1947, however, seemed to indicate that some objects were saucer shaped, and others, who were bu... more »

At 68 Patti Smith Still Has The Revolutionary Zeal Of A Twenty Year Old. Do You?

DownWithTyranny at DownWithTyranny! - 2 hours ago
A few days ago, writing for *The Nation*, John Nichols covered Patti Smith's European concert tour, which marks the 40th anniversary of the release of her groundbreaking debut LP, *Horses*, by marveling at how the veteran rocker is giving Europe a masterclass in focused protest rock that puts younger artists to shame. Her patter between songs sounds something like a cross between Bernie Sanders and Alexis Tsipras. Go Patti! At 68, Smith remains a vital and provocative artist with a radical message for the 21st century: “We are all being fucked by corporations, by the military! ... more »

Quote of the Day: "The New Testament v the American Revolution"

"It is impossible to square the kind of violent rebellion that America’s revolutionary creators advocated and engaged in with the actual meaning of the scripture and accurate interpretations thereof. Considerations of things such as "due process" and "no taxation without representation" are simply alien to the New Testament. Yes, it is Independence Day in the United States of America... Two hundred and 39 years ago, the American colonies declared their independence from the British Crown and Empire and a nation was born on the principles of freedom and liberty for all of its citizens... That is what the American people have long been led to believe... But in reality the original colonies never did become "independent" of the British Empire, and even today most Americans are truly unaware that the United States of America is actually still very much subservient to the British crown, and that the American... more »

Today we are tackling a serious ethical problem that society has worked hard to neuter. it has chosen to do this by renaming the act of prenatal infanticide as abortion. That fails to take away the nature of the act in which a duly conceived life is terminated. It is hardly surprising that so many have struggled with this issue from the beginning. Our challenge is to now investigate this question in light of new knowledge. We can now make a number of statements that are largely understood to be correct. 1. Mantis Shrimp Inspires New Armor Design Moduality

arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 21 hours ago
This is an amazing insight. Can we apply it to our skulls as well? filtering out damaging modes of shock is a huge innovation in material strenght and can be applyed even to bridges where vibration is the issue. It may even turn out to be simple to apply as well. The spiral shape is uniform and fiber size will be the important variable. This idea applied successfully to construction can give us vastly lighter construction modes and even hugely cheaper. We still have to figure out how, but i simply do not think it will be too hard. We have the correct hint. . *Mantis shrimp... more »

Nothing Can Stop China’s Quit Communism ‘Tsunami,’ Says Former Polish President Lech Walesa

arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 21 hours ago
The end of communism in China has been inevitable for decades yet has been tolerated so long as they stay out of the way. Otherwise the country is operated by an effective corporation of technocrats who enjoy the stability of authoritarianism. That the people now want alternative outlets for political action is becoming difficult to suppress and action has so far has been somewhat passive. The solution is to in fact extend full political freedom at the local level first and then to successive levels in stages of several years allowing natural legislators to be trained and to e... more »

Ata, the 6-Inch Tall Alien

arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 21 hours ago
The skeleton is terribly small, but the skull archetecture is seriously significant. It informs us how it is possible to produce large skulled humanoids such as we have also discovered. We have sliding plates that ultimately mesh after the brain is fully formed. The recent age of this skull and that it has not finished growing as well suggest that it may even grow into a full human sized being. This could be a child of the folks with the huge skulls although that now seems unlikely. We are also informed by this that these folks remain extent and that means living ... more »

The Enigmatic Pyramids of the Amazon

arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 21 hours ago
Firstly, they are close by Cusco down the foothills to the Amazon Basin. This inevitably makes it all part of the Incan complex at least. Add in the antiquity of other sites easily contemporaneous with the Great Pyramid at least and continuing to largely ignore largely flawed attempts to place pyramids before 13,000 BP as a so far unnecessary leap and we have one more conforming site that actually also explains why we have not had pyramids of significance here. They really needed flat land to build on and likely good geology. We are going to discover that large pyramids are... more »

The Two Contending Visions of World Government

arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 21 hours ago
There is only one vision of world governance however it is dressed up and it is top to bottom hierarchical and that has been its failing. Democratic elections do temper the system but it fails to temper any hierarchical construct at falls outside all that. The tempering process of the demos itself also comes up short and is often corrupted by money. It just happens to be the best that we have pulled off so far. Fortunately the enthusiastic hanging of various elites over the past two centuries has normally made even elites appreciative. As posted in the past, the USA is seri... more »

I am not so sure that I buy into all that is said here but it is still new material to me. However ,it is linked to fight or flight machinery and is close to our so called lower nervous system and consciouness and well positioned to act first. It really could 'cock' the body in preparation for an emergency. The take home is that we all need to learn a lot more about anatomy to understand how different exercises actually benefit the body. The more interesting question is just how did primitive man exercise those same muscles. More likely few got old enough to actually care mu... more »
