Oliver and Boyd 1953 - lessons from the early history of the lipid hypothesis.
The introduction to Hooper et al. 2015 gives a good potted history of the
lipid hypothesis. It's well worth reading to get some background as to why
this idea that saturated fat causes heart disease took off the way it did. (Hooper

There's a chain of logic involved. There is cholesterol in atherosclerotic
plaques. There was a correlation between high cholesterol and heart
disease. Eating saturated fat tends to elevate serum cholesterol. Join the
dots.
The assumption is that the high cholesterol that correlates with heart
disease and the effect of saturated fat on serum choles... more »

Four U.S. Marines were killed on Thursday by a gunman who opened fire at
two military offices in Chattanooga, Tennessee, before being fatally shot

time when U.S. military and law enforcement authorities are increasingly
concerned about the threat posed by 'lone wolves' to domestic targets.

The Economy: "Maintaining the Illusion of Stability Now Requires Ever-Greater Extremes"
*"Maintaining the Illusion of Stability *
*Now Requires Ever-Greater Extremes"*
by Charles Hugh Smith
"This much-needed re-set to an economy that serves the many rather than the
few is what the Powers That Be are so fearful of. On the surface,
everything still looks remarkably stable in the core industrial economies.
The stock markets in Japan, Germany and the U.S. are only a few percentage
points off their highs, and we're constantly assured that inflation no
longer exists and official unemployment is low.
In other words, other than the spot of bother in Greece, life is good.

Sanders Surge Continues in Iowa & NH; Taking the Fight to Clinton

We know that Sanders is gaining in many polls, and that some are
attributing his rise to a growing "anyone but Clinton" mood among
Democrats. Nate Silver at FiveThirtyEight.com disagrees.
Data first, via Silver:
In Iowa, Sanders’s favorability rating has grown from about 35 percent at

improved from around 45 percent to 65 percent. Some of that is from

*Fun! Is organic farming making climate change worse?*
*Both Greenies and food freaks are "wiser than thou" types. They have a

create a parliamentary committee to oversee the security agencies, and put
the bill up for parliamentary review the bill within three years."
That was pretty thin gruel. And he has paid a price for his vague
suggestions of reform. Steve Sullivan writes that it's time for Trudeau ... more »
