academic researchshows that India, Nepal, Bhutan and Pakistanare engaged in a huge “water grab” in the Himalayas, as they seek new sources of electricity to power their economies. Taken together, the countries have plans for more than 400 hydro dams which, if built, could together provide more than 160,000MW of electricity – three times more than the UK uses.
In addition, China has plans for around 100 dams to generate a similar amount of power from major rivers rising in Tibet. A further 60 or more dams are being planned for the Mekong river which also rises in Tibet and flows south through south-east Asia. Peakwater

Indian company seeks Russian support to build ships

In the aftermath of the general election, this little gem from the BBC caught my eye. It reported on the seemingly counter-intuitive view that political parties, particularly if they lose, often experience a surge in membership. There have been seven recent incidents involving Chinese personnel demanding aircraft of the Armed Forces of the Philippines flying over the South China Sea to leave, a senior military official said. Western Command chief Vice Adm. Alexander Lopez told the Philippine News Agency last week that Chinese attempts to challenge Philippine maritime patrol flights started on April 19. The Navy is exploring a fourth alternative for its $16.7 million submarine-escort vessel dock project on Ediz Hook. The site of the fourth alternative will not be released until this fall, according to Navy spokeswoman Liane Nakahara, who said it will be part of the project’s environmental assessment.
