China and India ‘Water Grab’ Dams Put Ecology of Himalayas in Danger

academic researchshows that India, Nepal, Bhutan and Pakistanare engaged in a huge “water grab” in the Himalayas, as they seek new sources of electricity to power their economies. Taken together, the countries have plans for more than 400 hydro dams which, if built, could together provide more than 160,000MW of electricity – three times more than the UK uses.
In addition, China has plans for around 100 dams to generate a similar amount of power from major rivers rising in Tibet. A further 60 or more dams are being planned for the Mekong river which also rises in Tibet and flows south through south-east Asia. Peakwater

Dams Versus Rivers – the Global Battle

International Rivers has launched ‘The State of the World’s Rivers’, an interactive online database that illustrates the role that dams have played in impoverishing the health of the world’s river basins.

The database shows how river fragmentation due to decades of dam-building is highly correlated with poor water quality and low biodiversity. Many of the world’s great river basins have been dammed to the point of serious decline, including the Mississippi, Yangtze, Paraná and Danube. Climate Himalaya

Essay: Changing the Anti-Ship Cruise Missile Paradigm

Ko Savonije at Naval Open Source INTelligence - 15 minutes ago
During the Third Taiwan Strait Crisis (1995–96), United States naval dominance was demonstrated through the deployment of two carrier battle groups as a show of force within 100 miles of the Chinese mainland. Then-Secretary of Defense William Perry could state that while the Chinese “are a great military power, the premier—the strongest—military power in the Western Pacific is the United States.” Since then, there has been a steady encroachment on the U.S. Navy’s maritime dominance through the development of technologically advanced and increasingly effective anti- ship cruise mis... more »

Barack Obama accuses Russia of adopting an “increasingly aggressive” stance on Ukraine, during a meeting with NATO's chief in the White House. RT's Gayane Chichakyan has the details. The Strange Return of the Political Party

Phil at All That Is Solid ... - 11 hours ago
In the aftermath of the general election, this little gem from the BBC caught my eye. It reported on the seemingly counter-intuitive view that political parties, particularly if they lose, often experience a surge in membership. The Liberal Democrats, for instance, who saw their worst defeat in their history saw them put on 10,000-15,000 members (depending on who you talk to) since the general election. The Greens have apparently added another 5,000, the SNP 7,000, and Labour just over 30,000. Poor old UKIP, however, failed to put on any thanks to some untimely IT problems. Still, ... more »

Israeli Gears - Meet the Real Israeli Defense Force: the US Congress

urupiper at Yesterday 's Lies - 21 hours ago
Weekend Edition May 22-24, 2015 by JEFFREY ST. CLAIR It started as a rather melancholy Friday afternoon in the West Bank. Nothing unusual. Just another funeral for a promising young man who died much too young. Under the implacable shadow of the Wall and in the rifle sights of Israeli soldiers, more than 200 mourners walked down the cobbled street toward the old cemetery in the village of Beit Ummar. Some shouted angrily at the soldiers, condemning Israel for yet another senseless death. The funeral was for a college student, Jafaar Awad, who slipped into a coma and died only ... more »

Only the present can be lost for this is all that is man's. Also remember that the cycles of the world exhibit the same recurring pattern, so it makes no difference how long you watch them repeat.” - Marcus Aurelius Antoninus
