Social Security-- Still A Target For Conservative Predators

Conservatives have never been boosters of Social Security. Republicans and right-wing Democrats decried it as socialism back in the 1930s. Disgracefully, Southern "Democrats" only agreed to support it at all when they were able to exclude most African-Americans. The legislation was immensely popular among the voting public and after delaying it and watering it down as best they could, dozens of Republicans in fear of the electorate went along and voted for it in the end. The Social Security Act of 1935 passed in the House on April 19, 1935 by a vote of 372-33 (+ 2 Members voting "... more »

Liberty and good government do not exclude each other; and there are excellent reasons why they should go together. Liberty is not a means to a higher political end. It is itself the highest political end. It is not for the sake of a good public administration that it is required, but for security in the pursuit of the highest objects of civil society, and of private life." *-- Lord Acton in his "The Hist... more »

One can get fed up writing every day about the trivia, blunders, lies, propaganda, sloppiness and general incompetence of the Irving press. For today, I'll talk about just one column. It's a good column. It's "Security rules", and it was written by Louise Gilbert, who always does a good job. She speaks of a need for people to communicate with each other, and speaks of a seniors chat group she is organizing; and she gives the time and address for those interested. Good idea. Maybe I should go. So I checked the date of the meeting. May 6 - almost a week ago. Obviously, the editor sim... more »

The US proxy war in Ukraine continues... Right now there definitely has been a lull in the fighting in the eastern provinces which I call the "lull before the storm" meaning that the criminal US puppet regime has been using this temporary "cease fire" period to build up its armaments and put their ground forces into place with heavy weaponry for the launch of a new campaign to reconquer the eastern provinces from the so called "rebel forces", and in the process main mutilate and murder civilians... China Isn’t Denying That They Want To Build A Military Base In Djibouti

China’s foreign ministry issued a rambling statement — but not an outright denial — in response to a report on Monday that it was in talks to establish a military base in the Horn of Africa, a potential first for Beijing. Djibouti, a small country on the tip of the horn that is also home to a sizable U.S. military presence, is currently in negotiations with China over establishing a base on its territory, the country’s president, Ismail Omar Guelleh, told AFP in an interview. “France’s presence is old, and the Americans found that the position of Djibouti could help in the fight a... more »

[image: INS Vikrant]The government has been left with little option but to spend approximately Rs 29,000 crore extra from its coffers to complete eight indigenous warships, thanks to shoddy planning and poor execution on the part of the agencies associated with these projects. Going by the original plan, the three naval projects cumulatively would have cost Rs 9,892 crore and should have gone into service in the last decade. But while cost was revised upwards to Rs 38,855 crore – a jump of Rs 28,963 crore — the projects are six to eight years behind the planned delivery schedule. ... more »

[image: Vanguard class SSBN]Right up to the moment the polling stations closed at 10 p.m. last Thursday in the U.K., the political pundits were unwavering in their forecasts: neither Prime Minister David Cameron’s Conservatives nor the opposition Labour Party wielded enough firepower for an outright win in Britain’s 2015 parliamentary elections. Had Labour emerged with the most seats in the House of Commons, its hopes of forming a viable government would have required the support of the fiercely anti-nuclear Scottish National Party. We already know that mercury was used possibly contemporaneously in China for large tomb structures to create representations of water on a display table for the first emperor. With summer just around the corner, now is a good time to start thinking about buttoning up your home for maximum efficiency! This is especially true for those in areas of the country that experience extreme heat, which results in frequent overexertion of air conditioners. Air conditioning units consume energy in the form of electricity. When a home has a significant amount of solar heat gain with uncovered windows, this puts a greater strain on the unit resulting in more energy consumption. These exposed windows act almost like an oven, and literally heat up the inside of your hom... more »

It’s a painful comparison … for Canada. Today Norway has a trillion dollars in its reserve fund and no deficit, combined with excellent universal social insurance. Alberta i... more »
