*by Noah* All right. Enough of *Mad Men*. We spent more than enough time wondering how the show will end. Now we know. And, now we can be reminded that there’s more important stuff in the world, really. The true ending was fine. Whatever. But, I might have liked any or all of these possible endings (below) better. The man known to most as Don Draper very well may have *many* alternate lives, so why can’t the show that centers on him have many alternate endings? Here are 10. *1. The polls were with Labour. The feedback on the doorstep was very encouraging. It looked like all the naysayers and the problems of the previous five years had been put to bed. Until *that* exit poll flashed up on the nation's TV screens. It gave the Tories a clear lead, and one several seats away from a majority. Then the worst happened. As the night wore on it became increasingly clear Labour were not winning the seats it needed to capture to form the largest party, and by the morning the impossible had happened: David Cameron had pulled the irons of an overall majority from the ...more »

Science is a painfully tight pair of shoes. It perceives the family of life to be little more than a complex biochemical machine. It has created powerful tools for ravaging the planet’s ecosystems, creating a hard path for our descendants. It gives us knowing, but not caring. It’s not about wisdom. It’s about pursuing the wants and needs of humans, with less concern for the more-than-human world. Robin Kimmerer is a biology professor. I haven’t listened to “You and Yours” radio 4 for a long time, but today I happened to hear the phone-in about the licence fee. Does the BBC licence fee represent good value for money? Apart from the obvious irony of the BBC controlling a phone-in that was supposed explore its own value for money, and notwithstanding Winifred Robinson’s tendency to cut short anyone who said nay and lingering indulgently over those who said yea, several unaddressed issues were left hanging heavily in the air. Some callers said the BBC ‘wasn’t for them’ because few of the programmes interested them. ...more »

Threat Matrix: *‘Strategy to defeat Islamic State is working,’ US Department of Defense claims* *This Department of Defense news article (reproduced in full below) on the status of the fight against the Islamic State couldn’t have been more poorly timed. Published on May 15, the same day that the Islamic State overran the government center in Ramadi, the report provides a pollyannaish view from Brigadier General Thomas D. Weidley of the US military’s air campaign and the Iraqi military’s fight against the Islamic State. Weidley is the chief of staff for Combined Joint Task Force O...more »
On the Futaba cam the view over the plant is quite dark. The light that flashes off to the left of the screen is active today (and it was blinking yesterday also). I presume it is some sort of warning light since it can be seen from the road to Daiichi but I could be wrong. The TEPCO 1 cam view reveals an illuminated area behind unit 3, to the right of the giant vent stack, immediately over the building. This illumination is not typical and usually coincides, when it occurs, with subsequent emissions (based on my observations):
*TUESDAY, MAY 19, 2015Part 2—The facts you still haven’t heard:* How vast is the dumbness of the whale? (Editor’s note: The “whale” to which this post refers is the mammoth, appalling cetacean known as “the national press corps.”) How vast is the dumbness of the whale? Today, let’s consider the way Melville’s “spouting fish” has buried basic information as it pretends to discuss its current consensus scandal. For years, we’ve stated a basic point—facts and information play almost no role in our public discourse. As the whale descends to the deep to compose a standard group tale,...more »
There was more heavy fighting, and an uptick in terrorist attacks in Iraq during the second week of May 2015. In Anbar the government continued to try to gain back territory it lost last month. The battle for control of the Baiji refinery was on going in Salahaddin, while in Baghdad and Diyala there were mass casualty bombings. The Islamic State looks to be trying to counter attack in selected areas and launching more terrorist bombings to make up for its recent losses. There were 154 attacks reported in the media from May 8-14, 2015. That was the exact same amount as the week be...more »

Thursday, March 27, 2014 The alleged "Holocaust" of "6 million Jews" at the hands of Adolf Hitler and National Socialist Germany during WWII is the biggest lie ever foisted upon humanity. The very idea that the Germans organized and executed a complex conspiracy involving "homicidal gas chambers" and other barbaric, sadistic forms of mass murder designed to exterminate European Jewry during WWII is laughable on its face when you stop and objectively think about it. National Socialist Germany and her allies were fighting a multi-front war against some of the most powerful nations in ...more »

*Big batteries are needed to back up wind and solar* *A recent physics paper has looked at the problems caused when erratic wind and solar power is fed into a grid. A stable supply can still be given to the consumer when such inputs are slight but, when they become a significant part of the system, brownouts and blackouts may result. To prevent that, feeding the power through big batteries (accumulators) would be the best option. The undoubtedly large costs of doing so are not mentioned. Abstract and a few excerpts below* Impact of Low Rotational Inertia on Power System Stabil...more »

As it has from the very beginning, the Harper government is focused on aping the American experience. The United States and Georgia have started a two-week military exercise in the southern Caucasus Republic on Monday. For Russia the presence of US troops a few kilometers from its border is a provocation, just as is a US promise of the NATO membership to Georgia. "In a sense, human flesh is made of stardust… Every atom in the human body, excluding only the primordial hydrogen atoms, was fashioned in stars that formed, grew old and exploded most violently before the Sun and the Earth came into being. The explosions scattered the heavy elements as a fine dust through space. By the time it made the Sun, the primordial gas of the Milky Way was sufficiently enriched with heavier elements for rocky planets like the Earth to form.
