I grew up in the second half of the 20th century, during which there did not seem to be a very big difference between Democrats and Republicans. I followed my parents to vote for Republicans until Kennedy was elected and became a Democrat ever after. Meanwhile Paul Craig Roberts, a year younger than me with a similar education (4 years in technical schools and 6 years of post graduate studies) was a Republican who became a Fellow of several major think tanks, economic council for several Republican members of Congress, Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for Economic Policy under Ronald Reagan, and an editor of the Wall Street Journal. However at some point in the 21st century, Paul saw through the 9/11 attacks as an inside job and became so alarmed about the way our country is headed that he abandoned those lucrative occupations to warn Americans of the loss of their Constitutional freedoms and the rapid descent of our country into a police state. While I still call myself a progressive Democrat, I have found Paul’s blog posts so important that in the past 5 years I have reposted many of them. I regard the one below his most powerful one yet.

[Video] The Swiss militiaman fighting in Syria to protect Christians
While large, powerful, and wealthy states are secretly training ISIL terrorists and equipping with sophisticated weapons to wipe religious and ethnic minorities from the map in Syria, small groups and individuals like the Swiss officer depicted in the video below are teaching basic self-defense military techniques to ordinary citizens to help them defend their communities from ISIL's brutal terror campaigns. In the end, the large, powerful, and wealthy states such as America, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, England, France, Israel, Qatar, and UAE who are backing ISIL's terror in Syria and a... more »

Donovan and seven other construction executives were acquitted yesterday of state charges of fraud and grand larceny after an eight-month trial in the Bronx. The jury deliberated barely 10 hours over two days. One juror, Caesar Brown, said later that little discussion was needed and that just one ballot was required to find each defendant not guilty. The FBI Is Seeking Information On This Suspected American Islamic State Terrorist
*Do You Know This Islamic State Fighter? -- USA Today* Who is that masked man? The FBI thinks he might be an American jihadist who starred in an Islamic State propaganda video last month. The FBI on Tuesday sought the public's help in identifying the English-speaking Islamic State fighter with what sounds like "a North American accent." The agency posted a short clip of the original, 55-minute video released Sept. 19, which concludes with the purported executions of Syrian soldiers taken prisoner. The video does not show the killings, but the mass murders were reported by news age...more »
The Islamic State Is Slaughtering Muslims On A Massive Scale
*ISIS’s Gruesome Muslim Death Toll -- Dean Obeidallah, Daily Beast* The group’s killing of Westerners gets attention. But ISIS has killed far more Muslims, and publicizing that fact would harm it more. Last Thursday, the United Nations released a report that could provide us with one of the keys to defeating ISIS. Unfortunately, it received almost zero media attention. What makes this 26-page report (PDF) so powerful is that it describes to us the gruesome circumstances in which ISIS has killed fellow Muslims. We are talking beheadings, killing of women for objecting to ISIS’ poli... more »

Saturated Fat intake equivalent to 130g Butter a day is not significantly associated with higher heart disease risk in Finland.
If you saw Professor Rod Jackson on NZ TV the other day, he was arguing, ably it has to be said, that the whole Big Fat Surprise / Time magazine cover, and by extension LCHF, risks reversing gains made against heart disease in recent years. If you're advocating a high fat diet and saying saturated fat is not that important, if it's important at all, that's a serious charge, and worth taking seriously. For the defence: Another epidemiological analysis, a long-term follow up (21.4 year) of a population (1,981 men) was released last week. Dietary Fatty Acids and Risk of Coronary Heart... more »

thank you, thomas mulcair and the new democrats: thank you for saying no to war
Today I feel so much better about living in Canada. Once again, we have a political party that says no to war. A political party that says no to letting the US dictate Canadian foreign policy. I now feel much better about voting NDP in the next federal election... which can't come soon enough! It's a shrewd political move on the part of Thomas Mulcair, polarizing the field with the Liberals and Conservatives on one side and the New Democrats on the other. I have no doubt it's politically motivated, but why should I care about motives, when the end result would be diplomacy, humanita... more »

Tax Cut 20: On the Excise Tax on Gasoline, Various Regulatory Fees
Prof. Amado "Bong" Mendoza of the UP Political Science Department wrote another good article yesterday on tax policy. Part of his paper mentioned a low tax-GDP ratio (T/GDP) of only 12 percent in 2011, in reference to other data and points raised by WB consultant and now UPSE visiting Prof. Rosa Maria Alonso Terme. I commented that those measurements of low T/GDP ratio are wrong because such measurement counts only the collections of the BIR + BOC in computing T. It excludes other collections: 1. Collections by local government units (LGUs) of various taxes (real prop. tax, resi... more »

Russian Spy Station Near Israeli Border Seized By Syrian Rebels
*Syrian Rebels Seize Russian Spy Station Near Israeli Border -- Daily Beast* When the Free Syrian Army pushed Assad’s soldiers out of a town south of Damascus, the last thing they expected to find was a Russian spy post, a few miles from the Golan Heights. Syrian rebels have overtaken a joint Russian-Syrian secret facility that they claim was a covert intelligence collection base. Opposition fighters say the post was used to snoop in on the communications of opposition groups -- and perhaps even the nearby Israelis. An annoyed judge may disqualify themselves
Cabana v. Newfoundland and Labrador, 2014 NLCA 34 : [45] The manner in which a judge conducts a hearing may result in a reasonable apprehension of bias disqualifying the judge from hearing proceedings involving a particular litigant. As a general rule, the patient and courteous treatment of all litigants will serve to maintain the community's confidence in and respect for the courts and the justice system (*Ethical Principles of Judges*, *supra*, under "Adjudicative Duties"). Supplemental: Our choice for current most interesting scribe!
*TUESDAY, OCTOBER 7, 2014Which isn’t exactly a compliment:* We’ve begun to think that Salon’s Katie McDonough is the most interesting writer out there. We don’t mean that as a compliment, though there are several things we like about McDonough’s work. We like her values, and her aggressive pursuit of those values. We like the way she seems to walk the walk, which we won’t even try to explain. But good God! On balance, McDonough’s writing is awful. Along with her positioning at Salon, that explains why we think her work is so interesting. We don’t know when we’ve seen a writer with...more »

Good discussion with deeper level of understanding about what is really going on in China.
Oct. 7: Canadian values and prinicples - hypocrisy is number one.
It's Monday. I've been watching Harper and his crowd preaching to the House of Commons on TV. It reminded me of graduate school days. One of my teachers was Arthur Lower, then the author of the standard text for Canadian history. It arose from his experience in World War One and then the increasing independence of Canada. So he called it Colony to Nation. Even as we took the course, though, most of us felt that we had ceased to be a colony of Britain only to become a colony of the United States - so we used to call his book Colony to Nation to Colony. It's now much worse. In recent...more »

One Last Assault On Labour

The bill died in the Senate last year when Conservative senators, led by the now retired Hugh Segal, revolted and refused to pass the bill because -- according to Segal -- it was "flawed, unconstitutional and technically incompetent." The revived bill is still probably unconstitutional because "it almost certainly violates provincial constitutional authority and federal privacy standards." But whether o... more »

Sex workers and victims alike betrayed by Canadian government
As much as I like to gripe about Canada's government, there are only a handful of decisions over the years that have really stood out in my mind as betrayals of what I think it means to be Canadian. One was free trade, which followed the U.S. into a downward spiral of lower wages, part-time work and a dwindling list of goods that could be honestly considered to be "made in Canada." While it may have made things better for developing countries, it has been one of several factors adding to the growing divide between rich and poor. What U.S. Air War In Syria
US Airforce via Reuters *America’s WTF Air War In Syria -- Jamie Dettmer, Daily Beast* The ‘pinpricks’ from American bombs continue, and so do the advances of ISIS. Better communications on the ground might change all that. SURUC, Turkey – The roar of U.S. warplanes swooping over the mainly Kurdish border town of Kobani in Syria on Saturday night was greeted with clenched–fist relief by Turkish Kurds keeping vigil in villages along the border. In the gloom the flash of missiles impacting in the distance heartened them. Kurds hope the second consecutive night of American airstrikes... more »

Power
Yesterday's post was just a cathartic exercise for me. I was just flabbergasted to hear that Nestle was still pushing its infant formula on women with no access to clean water for at least 15 years after they'd signed an international code of conduct saying they'd stop doing so. Now, I just want to say again, that the left mystifies and bewilders me. Why do we no longer want to gain power? What's the point of all of our activity if we really don't want to achieve anything by it? If our lack of resources (including access to the media) is preventing us from getting our message across... more »
TSA Sued Over Desecration of Ohio Man's Mother's Cremated Remains
Ever since its inception the Transportation Security Agency (TSA) which serves as America’s airport Gestapo has come under fire for numerous transgressions. Whether it be feeling up children, shaking down old women in medical diapers, intimidating hapless travelers or stealing their belongings it is a big government abomination of the worst type. In a great example of not letting a good crisis go to waste, the TSA was launched in the tense aftermath of the September 11, 2001 attacks and has turned into a permanent fixture in an increasingly fascist America. Is Bill Clinton's Endorsement Really The Only One That Moves Voters This Year?
Even Bill can't perform miracles when the candidate is completely implausible Author Steven King is such an iconic figure in Maine that I have to think his fulsome endorsement of Shenna Bellows for Senate helped— at the very least— to draw much-needed attention to her race. what i'm reading: how i live now, excellent (youth) novel by meg rosoff
Last year, I wrote about an excellent, unusual youth novel called *There Is No Dog*, by Meg Rosoff. I recently read the author's 2004 debut novel, *How I Live Now*, and I'm here to lay down a flat-out rave review. Most of *How I Live Now* is told from the point of view of a teenaged narrator, in a present-tense first-person stream of thought, with long, rambling sentences and minimal punctuation. I often have problems with quirky or immature narrators as the voice feels forced and inauthentic to me. I found some famous and popular novels unreadable because of this. In this book, ho... more »

It’s easy to fascinate and receive kudos from the broader education community when you can do something interesting with technology. Before this school year started, I was asked to lead a technology club after school for fourth and fifth grade students. After brainstorming what was possible, what I wanted to do, what students might want […]
Which of the Supreme Court thug-justices finked out on God's own homo-haters?
*The Washington Post's "Changing landscape of same-sex marriage" map (click to enlarge). Not "flipped" on the map are some "pending appeal" states in two of the three appeals-court circuits where the Supreme Court today let pro-marriage-equality rulings stand: in the Fourth Circuit, West Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina; and in the Tenth Circuit, Kansas and Wyoming. Assuming all of these states are added to the "same-sex marriage OK" group, that will make 30.* *by Ken* By now I assume everyone has heard about what the Supreme Court did today in its strange stealthy way... more »
Geopolitics: “The Real Status of U.S. Forces in Afghanistan and Iraq”
*“The Real Status of U.S. Forces in Afghanistan and Iraq”* by Dr. Ron Paul “After 13 years of war in Afghanistan - the longest in US history - the US government has achieved no victory. Afghanistan is in chaos and would collapse completely without regular infusions of US money. The war has been a failure, but Washington will not admit it. More than 2,000 US fighters have been killed in the 13 year Afghan war. More than 20,000 Afghan civilians were also killed. According to a study last year by a Harvard University researcher, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan will cost in total betw... more »

Still image from an ISIS YouTube video *The Real Ideology Driving ISIS Isn't Islam Or Caliphate Revivalism: It's Ultraviolence -- Max Fisher, VOX* So much has been written about ISIS, the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. Where it comes from, what it wants, what drives its extremist ideology, why it has overtaken so much of the Middle East, what the world and the United States can and cannot do stop it. These are all complex and important topics worthy of intensive examination. But when ISIS released its third beheading video on Friday, of the British aid worker Alan Henning, and t... more »

The Kafkaesque Trial Going on in Atlanta
*“This conspiracy was cleverly, cleverly disguised and the purpose of the conspiracy was this – to illegally inflate test scores and create a false, false impression of academic success for many students in the Atlanta Public School system,” prosecutor Fani Willis said. “It was done to those students’ detriment.”* Too bad the corporate television networks don't find this trial in Atlanta as juicy as O.J. or the last murder victim story. Inflation's Not the Only Way Easy Money Destroys Wealth
*Guest post by Frank Shostak* The US Federal Reserve can keep stimulating the American economy because inflation is posing little threat, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis President Kocherlakota says. “I am expecting an inflation rate to run below two percent for the next four years, through 2018,” he says. “That means there is more room for monetary policy to be helpful in terms of … boosting demand without running up against generating too much inflation.” On the face of it, he’s right. The yearly rate of growth of the official consumer price index (CPI) stood at 1.7 percent i... more »
Roswell, Nathan Twining and the Mini-EOTS
There is a misunderstanding about the Twining letter and it is about what caused it to be written. To understand it in the context of the time, it is necessary to understand why the letter was written. In July 1947, an officer who worked for Brigadier General George Schulgen put together an Estimate of the Situation, which is not to be confused with the big one that was written later. This mini-EOTS covered a number of sightings that had been made early in 1947, including a few that had preceded Arnold. LTC George Garrett was the officer who wrote this EOTS that was sent to LTG Nat... more »

And he was never on the Most Wanted lists easily checked at any post office because they had no proof he was involved, right? Recomposing Labour
Oblivion is a shuffle, lurch, and crawl away for the Conservative Party. Even if by some dark miracle they are returned to power next year, the terminal crisis enveloping them cannot be sidestepped. Either the hard right lunatics decamp to an ever-so-pure and ever-so-irrelevant electoral lash up with the purple people bleaters, or they don't. And for as long as they lay claim to Toryism, so the Conservative Party will be permanently hobbled. Yet things aren't too great for Labour either. Demographics, economics, and culture are chewing up the Tories. But they're doing the same for L... more »

3D Metallic Pumpkin Art
I was given the ribbon to create this project, all other supplies and opinions are my own. Last year, I got rid of most of my Halloween decor, I just didn't love it and I didn't feel like it fit my personality. It was all too goofy or too scary. I wanted classic pieces in browns and golds that could work for Halloween and then with a few swaps, work great for Thanksgiving too. On the Official Israeli Reaction to Sweden's Plans to Recognize Palestine As A Sovereign State
My country has just gotten itself a new government, a rather frail coalition between Social Democrats and the Greens. It will be very dependent on compromises both with the Left party (which had hoped to be in the government, but were kept out by the new PM Stefan Löfvén) and the center-right parties, especially the Center party and the classic liberal Folkpartiet. In view of that, it perhaps came as a surprise (although the intention had been revealed well beforehand, in 2012) that Löfvén in his installation speech declared that the new government aims to recognise Palestine as a ... more »

The leaves pictured here are typical right now in New Jersey, still weeks before "peak" fall color is traditionally expected nearer the end of this month. Every autumn the leaves have had less vibrant color, displayed more egregious injury, and dropped sooner. This year their condition is so dreadful, it is nothing short of shocking. There's No Nice Way To Say This: John Kline Takes Bribes From Crooked For-Profit "Colleges"
We’ve talked a lot about how DCCC chairman Steve Israel refuses to target any Republican leaders or policy makers, including GOP committee chairs, even ones in vulnerable blue-leaning districts. MN-02 south of Minneapolis/St Paul is a good example. In 2008, Obama beat McCain there by 10,000 votes. Four years later it was much closer but he still beat Romney in the district, which had also voted for Amy Klobuchar in 2006 and 2012 and for Al Franken in 2008. All those blue victories don’t *guarantee* a Democrat can beat John Kline— not even this poll showing Mike Obermueller leading... more »
