“Have you ever seen a sun pillar? When the air is cold and the Sun is rising or setting, falling ice crystals can reflect sunlight and create an unusual column of light. Ice sometimes forms flat, six-sided shaped crystals as it falls from high-level clouds. Air resistance causes these crystals to lie nearly flat much of the time as they flutter to the ground. Sunlight reflects off crystals that are properly aligned, creating the sun-pillar effect. * Click image for larger size.* In the above picture taken last week, a sun-pillar reflects light from a Sun setting over Östersund, Swed... more »

Who is Vladimir Putin? A monster? If that's what you think, then you believe unresearched smears from the "mainstream media," which accept the government's lies as the truth in order to keep their jobs. In the video below President Putin answers difficult questions from individuals, many of them distinguished, from many countries outside of Russia including the U.S., France, and Ukraine. This may be the only 3-hour video I've ever watched outside a movie theater. For those with less time, after a 5-min introduction Putin has the floor for 35 minutes (with simultaneous English translation). The 'Guardian' attacks the BBC

Craig at Is the BBC biased? - 22 hours ago
According to the *Time*s, The Guardian has accused the BBC of overstepping its public service remit in an attempt to dominate global news. Andrew Miller, the chief executive of Guardian Media Group, said that the BBC’s plans to expand aggressively overseas is putting it in competition with British media groups that do not enjoy its public funding. “In our fast-changing industry, the time has come to address and remedy the implications of BBC dominance,” he said in a speech at the London School of Economics last night. Executives at other media companies said that Mr Miller’s comme... more »

Looking at the various news websites this morning (6.30am), it's interesting to see their contrasting news priorities. Sky News and ITV both lead with the latest school shootings in the U.S., a story BBC News doesn't feature in its top 10. The BBC leads with the resignation of Labour's Scottish leader. Politically, the most striking difference is that both Sky and ITV make Tony Blairs alleged negative remarks about Ed Miliband [the lead in the *Daily Telegraph*] one of their top 3 stories, while the BBC website ignores the story - which will doubtless provoke a few knowing 'aha!'s ... more »

Many interacting worlds approach is an original, equally flawed cousin of Bohmian mechanics

Luboš Motl at The Reference Frame - 23 hours ago
All the major "realist" attempts to reform the foundations of quantum mechanics – de Broglie-Bohmian mechanics, Ghirardi-Rimini-Weber-like collapse theories, and Everett-style many worlds – are known to suffer from serious diseases. To a large extent, "realism" itself is the problem. *Off-topic, physics:* In Physics World, Sylvester Jim Gates Jr explains why he is Sticking With SUSY. Doing something else would be as unwise as to conclude that giant sequoia trees don't exist after looking at the U.S. East Coast only. Supersymmetry, a Bose-Fermi symmetry, is really needed to "deeply" ... more »

I know, I know... it sounds paranoid. That's how the CIA want it to sound.
