*“Seal of Approval”* by Chet Raymo “What you see above is one of James Thurber's most famous drawings. (He called them drawings, not cartoons.) Why so famous? It's not exactly a knee-slapper. It appeals rather, I suppose, to something in us that is sardonic, oblique. It clearly fits in with Thurber's body of work on the taut relations between men and women. This poor fellow who hears (or thinks he hears) a seal bark is your typical Thurberesque milquetoast, Mr. Mitty harassed by Mrs. Mitty. It took long enough— and let’s hope it isn’t too little/too late— but Harry Reid and Guy Cecil finally responded to the growing anger, primarily from Democratic senators and donors, and have let the DSCC get to work in South Dakota. Above is their first ad against one of the three Republicans, Mike Rounds (the GOP Establishment favorite), being going up against Rick Weiland. DSCC polling shows its a winnable race. We’ve been subtly nudging them in that direction since the beginning of the year. South Dakotans know how corrupt Mike Rounds is— which is why the former governor can’t... more »

[image: image] The other day one of this blog’s regular trolls expressed amazement that I’d linked to a post on poverty in good faith. Surely, reasoned the troll, the only reason a blog promoting “capitalist acts” would link to the story of a woman living in poverty would be to point and laugh. The troll doesn’t get it. Because it is capitalist acts that are lifting people out of poverty all the time. And that’s one of the things this blog was created to celebrate. Does the “Left” actually need people to be on welfare to win elections?

Peter Cresswell at Not PC - 8 hours ago
*This guest post by **Nick Sorrentino** is something we might wonder about Labour…* First, what is called “Right ” and “Left” in politics today is increasingly up for grabs. The left-wing/right-wing political paradigm makes much less sense now that a significant part of the population self identifies as “libertarian,” which does not fit into the 20th Century way of looking at politics. [image: Left_Right] But the question of terminology is less important than whether those who advocate ever-larger government have to keep people “hooked” on welfare of one sort or another in orde... more »

*"This Will Mean 10 Years of Stock Market Losses" * by Bill Bonner "New England is stunning this time of year. Just what you'd expect. The leaves turn brown, yellow and red, putting on their best outfits and strutting their stuff in the cool autumn air. Autumn, especially in New England, is the loveliest time of the year. The sun barely clears the tops of the trees, even at noon. The light, filtered through the colored leaves, gives the earth the rich and heavy air of a funeral parlor. Perhaps that is why there are market crashes in the fall. Investors feel the approach of death.T... more »

In September my mother was here for her annual visit. I always plan some art or cultural attraction for us to take in. I'm pleased to say that the west-end suburbs was up to the challenge. When I blogged about him a few years back, he was called Kanellos, the Greek rebel dog. Somewhere along the way, English-language media dubbed him Riot Dog. He was also called Louk, short for Loukanikos. Louk, Kanellos, and also Thodoris may or may not have been the same dog. Whatever his name, he was brave, loyal, and handsome, and he stood on the side of the People. His health was diminished by tear gas, but he soldiered on. He died recently at the home of a person who cared for him. He was thought to be about ten years old.

So What is Agape? Join the Quest, Day 1

Sophia Love at AMERICAN KABUKI - 9 hours ago
This Quest, in the strictest definition, is not really a Quest at all. For a “Quest” is defined as *“a search or pursuit in order to find or obtain something”*. You don't have to “find” agape as much as allow it to be seen. You don't need to “obtain” agape either – it is not “obtainable”. Agape is the physical manifestation of truth. Agape is Source personified. Agape resides in the deepest, truest part of you. It is your beginning. It is something you already have, and therefore not “gettable”. So, we are technically on a Quest for something we own; something we are. Maybe what'... more »

Paul Craig Roberts (posted yesterday): "The CDC specifies a face mask, which the nurse had along with the other CDC specified gear. The use of face masks is based on the supposition that the virus is not airborne. Perhaps covering up for itself, CDC’s Dr. Tom Frieden attributed the nurse’s infection to 'a breach of safety protocol.' In fact, the problem might be that respirators are required in place of face masks. If the CDC misunderstands the nature of the disease and persists in misunderstanding, the disease could get out of control in the US."

Is Piketty wrong on British and Swedish wealth?

The princess may not be able to fly in the rain because of skin damage. Pilots may not get to train because of the cost of flying. "1492..."

noreply@blogger.com (CoyotePrime) at Running 'Cause I Can't Fly - 1 day ago
"Before our white brothers arrived to make us civilized men, we didn't have any kind of prison. Because of this, we had no delinquents. Without a prison, there can be no delinquents. We had no locks nor keys and therefore among us there were no thieves. When someone was so poor that he couldn't afford a horse, a tent or a blanket, he would, in that case, receive it all as a gift. We were too uncivilized to give great importance to private property. We didn't know any kind of money and consequently, the value of a human being was not determined by his wealth. We had no written laws l... more »

Columbus Day: "The Native Population of the Americas in 1492"

*"The Native Population of the Americas in 1492"* by William M. Denevan "How many people inhabited the New World when Columbus landed on Hispaniola in 1492? How did the arrival of Europeans spark the population decline of aboriginal people in the New World? William M. Denevan writes that, "The discovery of America was followed by possibly the greatest demographic disaster in the history of the world." Research by some scholars provides population estimates of the pre-contact Americas to be as high as 112 million in 1492, while others estimate the population to have been as low as e... more »

Not every silver lining has a cloud in it

Craig at Is the BBC biased? - 1 day ago
*stream of consciousness*... * In literary criticism, a narrative mode, or device, that seeks "to depict the multitudinous thoughts and feelings which pass through the mind." Another term for it is 'interior monologue'."* Doctor, I spent quite a few years bashing Paddy O'Connell and Radio 4's *Broadcasting House *for left-wing bias. Looking back at the evidence I gathered from around 2009 onwards I think it holds up well; hence, I'm at something of a loss to explain why I just don't find the same amount of bias these days. 'Something' is the key word because, thinking positively... more »

Fort Itaipu and Footnotes

KRandle at A Different Perspective - 1 day ago
I’ve been working on my new book, which is sort of a follow up to *Government UFO Secrets* (notice that I’ve slipped the name of my last book into this) and I have been doing something that I don’t think is being done very much. I’ve been chasing footnotes again. This means as I research a case, looking for all the information available on it, I attempt to return to the original source as much as possible. One way of doing that is look at the footnotes in other books to see where they gathered the information. The case in question here is the attack on Fort Itaipu, Brazel on Novembe... more »

Adventures in Canning: Butternut Squash...

Adrienne at Adrienne's Corner - 1 day ago
*enough for a winter and spring worth of butternut soup.* We love butternut squash soup. I make some with apples and ginger, and some with curry. An addition of some cream cheese makes it extra special creamy. Before serving a splash of extra dry sherry is nice. Butternut squash can be cured and successfully stored for up to 6 months in a cool dark place like a basement. We don't have a basement and the barn would be too cold, so canning is my only real choice. The store had a great deal at 25 cents per pound on winter squash. Not sure exactly how much to buy, I bought way too... more »

The Sacrifice of Kobane

Independent notes that US allies #Turkey #Qatar #KSA want #ISIS to kill off Shia'a/Kurds ... so does US. http://t.co/GTXgqVLvLR #Syria #Iraq — Tony Cartalucci (@TonyCartalucci) October 12, 2014 Let's call a spade a spade. Everybody in the Middle East and the world wants the ISIL/ISIS terror gangs to hammer the PKK/PYD/YPG in Kobane and make their presence on the northern Syrian battlefields as well as the surrounding countries, such as Turkey, Iraq, and Iran, irrelevant. The PKK is facing a blockade and fighting with shitty weapons made decades ago while ISIL is armed with 21st cen... more »

GOP Staffer Accuses Boehner's San Diego Candidate, Carl DeMaio, Of Predator Sexual Behavior

Scott Peters is a conservative San Diego New Dem, a multimillionaire (8th richest Member of Congress) who bought himself a seat in Congress in 2012 by writing his campaign a $2,757,452 check and outspending his Republican opponent, incumbent Brian Bilbray $4,352,737 to $2,772,270. Newly redistricted, CA-52 is way bluer than it’s ever been before, a D+2 district that takes in most of the city of San Diego before heading north to La Jolla along the coast and out to Poway and Rancho Bernardo inland. Under these line, Obama won the district 55-43% against McCain and 52-46% against Ro... more »

Second Day of Peace Walk

Bruce K. Gagnon at Organizing Notes - 1 day ago
Our second day of the peace walk took us from Rangeley to Phillips where local hosts have organized a three-soup pot luck for us. It is more than amazing to see the beauty of the Rangeley lakes area and I can't wait to come back to enjoy the nature in this place. Three peace women from Farmington found us mid-day and walked the remaining distance to Phillips. We walked a total of 12 miles today. It's 19 miles to Farmington from Phillips but we will only walk 16 miles tomorrow - got to break ourselves in easy as we go.The weather today more than fantastic. Lots of honks from ... more »
