The Assault on Public Education
One of America’s greatest achievements is being defunded and degraded by the dictates of the marketplace.
Mass public education is one of the great achievements of American society.
Public education is under attack around the world, and in response, student protests have recently been held in Britain, Canada, Chile, Taiwan and elsewhere.
California is also a battleground. The Los Angeles Timesreports on another chapter in the campaign to destroy what had been the greatest public higher education system in the world: “California State University officials announced plans to freeze enrollment next spring at most campuses and to wait-list all applicants the following fall pending the outcome of a proposed tax initiative on the November ballot.”
Similar defunding is under way nationwide. “In most states,” The New York Times reports, “it is now tuition payments, not state appropriations, that cover most of the budget,” so that “the era of affordable four-year public universities, heavily subsidized by the state, may be over.”
What Are Iran’s Intentions? Comments
The media resound with warnings about a likely Israeli attack on Iran while the U.S. hesitates, keeping open the option of aggression—thus again routinely violating the U.N. Charter, the foundation of international law.
As tensions escalate, eerie echoes of the run-up to the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq are in the air. Feverish U.S. primary campaign rhetoric adds to the drumbeat.
Concerns about “the imminent threat” of Iran are often attributed to the “international community”—code language for U.S. allies. The people of the world, however, tend to see matters rather differently.
As tensions flare between Iran and the West, 120 nonaligned nations agree: the country has the right to enrich uranium.
The matter of the intentions of a country which pioneered the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty and hosts international conferences on nuclear disarmament after decades of use of nuclear power should be obvious by negative results of the thousands of inspections they have hosted. Things are clouded by the removing of their fiscal base so as to defund the inspection agency ( IAEA ) and make it both overworked/impotent and a tool of power politics. Nor is the mission which Iraq signed on to in international treaty ( NPT ) even observed by the supposed oversight - but rather a not agreed to modified regime.
Even so, it is perfectly clear that after not developing deployable nuclear weapons for decades, Iran is at the very least in no hurry to proceed in that direction.
Nor do they need to do so,with reactor technology and materials supplied by Russia - which will be in no more mood to fund a nuclear threat in its back yard than when NATO bases in Turkey had nuclear missiles before the reciprocal initiative when the U.S.S.R. so armed Cuba - which considers Iran power technology its own and a matter to defend itself ! There are still MIRVed ICBMs in Russia : no need to hunt mythical WMD when the real thing is staring you in the face.
The matter of Iran`s intentions is still a propaganda coup as it still is re: North Korea. Note compliance with the NPT did nothing to save Saddam Hussein from his killers.
