One study found that used-clothing imports cause a 40% decline in apparel production in Africa. According to aid critics, the unending stream of foreign money creates a situation where governments are not accountable to their citizens, forming what are essentially aid-based rentier states.

April 16 marked the second annual Day Without Dignity, a day of awareness challenging existing narratives about international development and foreign aid to low-income countries. The campaign was started in response to a popular shoe company's TOMS's widely publicised "One Day Without Shoes," which took place on April 5.
Economist Dambisa Moyo, who advocates replacing foreign aid with direct investment, estimates that over $1 trillion in development-related aid has been transferred from wealthy countries to countries in Africa.
Critics say that foreign aid has left Africa economically weaker and dependent on donor assistance, as well as less attractive to investors. According to Moyo, real-capita income is lower than in the 1970s, and the number of people who live on less than one dollar per day has grown.
