Ghosts of Iraq: Why the War Against Libya Remains Leaderless
On the fifth straight day of foreign, air- and sea-based attacks against Qaddafi's forces, there is still no one leading the massive Western force. The U.S., as Pentagon officials frequently point out at daily press conferences, is not in charge. NATO, still deadlocked by internal disputes, is not in charge. The United Nations Security Council, which only gave enough authority to enforce a no-fly zone, is not in charge of the now far more aggressive campaign. The Arab League, which withdrew its support within hours of granting it, is certainly not in charge. It would be as if, in June 1944, the allied powers decided to invade Normandy at roughly the same time, but didn't bother to appoint General Eisenhower to command and coordinate the multi-national force.

Karl Rove's Audacious Transparency Hypocrisy
Crossroads GPS, a non-profit co-founded by Rove that runs attack ads against Democratic candidates nationwide, has initiated an intriguing project called Wikicountability.org. This wiki site aims to post information on the Obama administration obtained by organizations, individuals, and journalists (via the Freedom of Information Act) and offer all these documents for crowd-sourcing. With this move, Rove's outfit is aligning itself with the transparency movement. Its press release announcing the site declares:The new initiative is designed to make federal departments and agencies more accountable to the public. Groups and individuals will be able to upload their own FOIA requests and responses to the website, creating a national clearinghouse for data concerning the Obama Administration. Thousands of pages of information from the Departments of Labor and HHS have already been uploaded to the site, and Crossroads is encouraging other groups and individuals to upload their own FOIA information to the site as well.
This Crossroads GPS project, though, is built upon a profound incongruity. The conservative organization is championing accountability and openness, yet it does not disclose the well-heeled funders and special interests underwriting its own efforts to shape the political system. Last year, Crossroads GPS—which Rove and Ed Gillespie, another former Bush White House aide, created following the Supreme Court's controversial Citizens United decision—spent $17 million on the 2010 elections to elect Republicans. NBC News reported that a "substantial portion of Crossroads GPS' money came from a small circle of extremely wealthy Wall Street hedge fund and private equity moguls." Crossroads GPS is the poster-nonprofit for secret campaign mega-money.
Ros-Lehtinen targets several State Department budget items
Josh Rogin - the administration's separation of State Department funding between regular budget accounts and the war-related account known as "overseas contingency operations," (OCO) obscures what she calls the "dramatic and unsustainable" funding increases for diplomacy and development over recent years. The OCO account includes money to help the State Department assume increased responsibilities in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan, which totaled $5.1 billion in fiscal year 2010.
Ros-Lehtinen said that when all the money requested is totaled, it equals $61.4 billion -- or a 13 percent increase over fiscal 2010 levels.According to the Office of Management and Budget, the entire State Department and USAID fiscal 2012 budget request, which can be found here, seeks just over $47 billion, a 1 percent increase over fiscal 2010 levels. The president is requesting a grand total of $50.9 billion for U.S. diplomacy and development efforts, after accounting for programs outside State and USAID, such as the Peace Corps, the Broadcasting Board of Governors, and the Millennium Challenge Corporation. That's $3.7 billion -- or 6.7 percent less -- than the $54.6 billion that was requested for the same accounts in fiscal 2011.Obama is also requesting $8.7 billion in supplemental funding for the State Department and USAID in fiscal 2012 under the OCO account, a $2.3 billion increase over the fiscal 2011 request.Ros-Lehtinen criticized several items in the administration's budget request.Navy chief: We don’t know what happens next in Libya war
Roughead also said there's no guarantee that U.S. military forces would be able to decrease their presence or activities when the transition takes place. In other words, the U.S. military might give up control, but still be doing most of the work.
Ohioans oppose rollback of public employee bargaining rights, too
By Greg SargentIt looks like Governor Scott Walker’s initiative isn’t the only proposed rollback of bargaining rights that’s tanking in the polls — and dragging a GOP governor down with it. This poll has a very interesting finding that undermines a key right-wing talking point: That such polling finds opposition to rolling back collective bargaining only because it uses the word “rights.” Quinnipiac split its sample, and asked the other half the same question, only without the word “rights.” The result? Ohioans still oppose the bill when it’s described as “limiting collective bargaining for public employees,” albeit by a slightly lesser amount: 48-41.
As Quinnipiac’s polling director puts it: “The word ‘right’ appears to have an effect on the voters’ response. But no matter how the question is asked, voters oppose limits on collective bargaining.” And in both cases, independents also oppose the measure. So you want to hold Muslim hearings? Here’s how to do it.
By Adam SerwerSenator Dick Durbin has announced that he, too, is now planning hearings on American Muslims. Unlike Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.), however, Durbin wants his Senate judiciary committee hearing to focus on protecting the civil rights of American Muslims, rather than on the alleged “radicalization” of the community as a whole.
