World War II Dream Match: Hitler's Super Battleship Bismarck vs. Japan's Yamato Class
*Robert Farley* *History, World* Two of the largest classes of battleships ever built. *Key Point*: Bismarck and Tirpitz simply did not compare favorably with any other navy’s fast battleships. Can we imagine a scenario in which two titans of World War II, the German battleship *Bismarck* and the Japanese battleship *Yamato*, would come into conflict? Difficult, but not impossible. The Japanese military lacked enough ships, planes and fuel to defend the nation, leaving coastal areas at the mercy of the steel behemoths. Far More Taxpayer Funded Science Has Become Free To Read Thanks To Coronavirus - That May Be Here To Stay
Scientific publishing is not known for moving rapidly. In normal times, publishing new research can take months, if not years. Researchers prepare a first version of a paper on new findings and submit it to a journal, where it is often rejected, before being resubmitted to another journal, peer-reviewed, revised and, eventually, hopefully published. All scientists are familiar with the process, but few love it or the time it takes. And even after all this effort – for which neither the authors, the peer reviewers, nor most journal editors, are paid – most research papers end up l... more »

Did an Israeli Air Strike Prevent Syria From Getting Nuclear Weapons?
*Robert Farley* *Security, Middle East* Armageddon averted? Probably not. *Key Point*: The Israeli strike on Syria was probably not decisive in preventing Syria from getting a nuclear weapon. On September 6, 2007, Israeli fighter-bombers destroyed a mysterious installation near the Euphrates River in the Deir-ez-Zor region. The strike incurred curiously little response from Damascus. A cyber-attack reportedly pre-empted a defensive Syrian military mobilization, and even the diplomatic outcry was muted. Americans Think the Founding Fathers Were Evil. You Should Be Afraid.
*Jarrett Stepman* *Politics, Americas* [image: The word] Many will shrink in the face of ruthless “woke” mobs, empowered by the steady drumbeat of support coming from America’s elite cultural institutions. Were the Founding Fathers heroes or villains? History Book Questions: What If President Nixon Never Visited China?
*Robert Farley* *Politics, Asia* The long run re-emergence of the People’s Republic onto the international stage was hard to stop. *Key Point*: U.S.-Chinese rapprochement was not inevitable, but strong forces on both sides benefitted from it. What if Nixon had never gone to China? China’s shift of weight towards the United States had major international implications. It heightened Soviet military vulnerability, while also providing what would become an engine of global economic growth. Within China, the pivot opened space for major domestic economic reform, although the Chinese... more »

Why did South Africa decide to build nukes, how did it build them and why did it decide to give them up? The answers are largely... more »
