Was the Lockdown a Big Mistake that the Government is Not Willing to Admit?
From California to New Jersey, Americans are protesting in the streets. They are demanding an end to house arrest orders given by government officials over a virus outbreak that even according to the latest US government numbers will claim fewer lives than the seasonal flu outbreak of 2017-2018. REVEALED: UK Ministers Knew Crisis Had Peaked Before Lockdown, But Panicked Anyway
Since March, 21WIRE has consistently said draconian lockdown measures being pushed by countries like the UK, France, US and Canada – were ill-informed and not at all necessary in order to ‘contain’ the coronavirus. Moreover, we have consistently stated across many media platforms that these were not science-based decisions either, but rather political decisions taken by government officials as part of a mass-panic, alongside a parallel roll-out of a broader authoritarian agenda.

If you break your neck, if you have nothing to eat, if your house is on fire – then you’ve got a problem. Everything else is an inconvenience. Life is inconvenient. Life is lumpy. A lump in the oatmeal, a lump in the throat and a lump in the breast are not the same kind of lump. One needs to learn the difference." - Robert Fulghum

COVID-19, Capitalism, And Socialism
The COVID-19 emergency underscores longstanding truths about capitalism and socialism. Acting on the most immediate demands that it raises draws us directly into a confrontation with core issues. COVID-19 is exceptionally contagious, and those who are infected by it do not necessarily show symptoms. These two traits, in combination, guarantee rapid spread of the virus unless certain requirements have been met. Most directly, there must be ample supplies of the appropriate diagnostic tests, personal protective gear (masks, gloves, hand sanitizers, etc., especially for healthcare wo... more »

Further thoughts on "representative sample voting"
I posted a comment on "Election Fetishism" several days ago, and I then received the following superb response (and critique) from a San Francisco lawyer, Gordon W. Renneisen. He asks a host of completely relevant questions. Perhaps the most probing has to do with whether the "representative sample" of voters would be selected just before election day--and thus in fact being no more likely than the typical voter to have deeply studied relevant issues--or selected well in advance, which raises all sorts of important problems about access to the now small set of determinative voters... more »

PhD Epidemiologist: Social Distancing and Lockdown Worst Way to Deal with Airborne Respiratory Virus
Today we continue to offer alternative perspectives from other scientists and medical doctors on the COVID-19 virus, and the response to it. As I have previously written, we feel it is important to give a voice to all sides of this current pandemic, especially because so much is being censored from the coporate-sponsored "mainstream" media. Facebook just announced, for example, that they banning any information regarding protests against the government's response to COVID-19 that has put millions of people out of work. Central banks can “magically” prevent disinflation
People often say that central banks cannot magically create jobs when government lockdowns are closing down many industries. That’s correct. But it’s equally true that central banks can make the problem even worse that supply-side factors alone would mandate. Textbook theory suggests that monetary policy should react to an adverse supply shock by allowing the […] The post Central banks can “magically” prevent disinflation appeared first on Econlib.
China's Great Pandemic Gamble
*Daniel R. DePetris* *Security, Asia* [image: Reuters] China may have wracked up a lot of influence over the past decade with its debt-trap diplomacy, trillion-dollar Belt and Road project, and more proactive representation at the United Nations. But the coronavirus pandemic and China’s actions risk undermining some of those achievements. For the global commons, the coronavirus pandemic has served as one, giant slap in the face. The disease has exposed just how unprepared, under-resourced, and overworked the U.S. healthcare system is during a raging public health crisis. It has ... more »

Coronavirus And The Crisis This Time
Crises – not regular downturns but major crises – are characterized by the uncertainty they bring. They interrupt the normal and require yet-to-be discovered abnormal responses in order for us to move on. In the midst of these periodic calamities, we don’t know how or even whether we will stumble out of them nor what to expect if they do end. Crises are, consequently, moments of turmoil with openings for new political developments, good and bad. Because each such crisis modifies the trajectory of history, the subsequent crisis occurs in a changed context and so has its own distinc... more »
