I believe that writers of Bermuda Triangle lore thought that since Dan Burack reported he was one mile off Miami and Buoy Number 7 is about one mile off Miami, they just assumed that he was near the buoy. While he might have been about one mile off shore, and he was near Miami, that doesn’t mean he was close to the buoy. When a nation faces a crisis, the first reaction of its intellectuals and politicians is to launch some grand scheme involving brutality, idiocy, and incompetence—instead of saving their society from the crisis, they destroy livelihoods, create horror and desperation, and unleash a new crisis much bigger than the original crisis. The people, however, never complain because they are in awe of grand schemes, which they view as festivals in which reality and truth are violated and mocked; all devastation is justified if people take pleasure in it, so runs the logic of democracy.
