The long, winding, and sometimes bizarre saga of the merger between Sprint and T-Mobile began drawing to a close on Friday, as the Justice Department approved the transaction subject to significant conditions. On the advice of National Security Advisor John Bolton, the administration has pursued that goal using “maximum pressure,” a tactic which thus far has consistently failed. Bolton’s preferred strategy has pushed Iran closer to the bomb, incentivized menacing behavior, and increased the chance of war. If we are to check this deteriorating situation before it’s too late, a new, realistic strat... more »

(to me) I wanted to mention an Intelligence Squared debate - the motion was “Anti-Zionism is Anti- Semitism” - but I thought its relevance to the BBC might be seen as tenuous or off-topic. Then I realised that the chairperson was Carrie Gracie. So it’s legit after all. You can read a full transcript of Melanie Phillips’s opening speech here. True Budget Hawks are Foreign Policy Doves

Ron Paul at 13 hours ago
[image: undefined] During my presidential campaigns, well-meaning supporters would sometimes suggest I stop emphasizing opposition to overseas intervention and focus on fiscal issues. I disregarded the advice, not only because adopting a noninterventionist foreign policy is crucial to restoring constitutional government but because it is impossible to be both a budget hawk and a war hawk. This is shown by the constant failure of so-called fiscal conservatives in the Republican leadership to fulfill their promise to cut spending. Military spending is the second largest category of s... more »

3 Republicans Just Announced They're Retiring From Congress But Just One Of The Districts Is Even Remotely Winnable

DownWithTyranny at DownWithTyranny! - 16 hours ago
There was no Blue Wave in 2018-- the Democrats were basically offering runny gruel. Instead there was a massive anti-Trump/anti-red wave. Unless the Democrats wind up nominating Bernie-- better yet Bernie + Elizabeth Warren-- there will be no Blue Wave in 2020 either. Even if the Democrats nominate the worst possible candidate-- Status Quo Joe, setting up the contest between 2 profoundly evil evils that Trump is so eager for-- there will still be another massive, perhaps more massive, anti-Trump/anti-red wave, a true tsunami this time. The GOP explains what happened last cycle not...more »

How it's supposed to be: Gilroy Garlic Festival 2018. I've never heard of a case that puts it in starker terms than this shooting spree in Gilroy, California (not too far from where I spent half my childhood in the suburbs of San Jose, which meant the story immediately grabbed me—we never went to the festival, but Gilroy's devotion to garlic was something that delighted us when we drove by on Highway 101 on the way to the beach or a camping trip): At least three people are dead and 11 people are injured after a shooting at the Gilroy Garlic Festival in Northern California, according... more »

Recording Meeting In Office Protected by National Labor Relations Act

Unknown at Screw You Guys, I'm Going Home - 16 hours ago
For those of us in all-party consent states like Florida, it's always an issue whether employees may record conversations with supervisors surreptitiously. Now employees have another weapon in their arsenal to support the legality of office recordings: the National Labor Relations Act (the Act). In a recent decision, a National Labor Relations Board Administrative Judge held that a recording of a meeting where unionization was being discussed was both legal and protected by the Act, even though company policy prohibited such recordings: Section 7 of the Act reads as follows: Empl... more »

Can Congress Investigate Whether the President Has Conflicts of Interest, is Compromised by Russia, or Has Violated the Law?

Marty Lederman at Balkinization - 16 hours ago
The answer to the question in my title is obvious, isn't it?: Of course Congress can do so. According to Donald Trump and his (personal) attorneys, however, the correct answer is “no.” And in a series of pending cases involving challenges to congressional efforts to obtain the President’s financial and tax records, they’re urging the courts to hold that Congress’s oversight and regulatory authorities simply don't extend to investigating the wrongdoing, foreign influence over, and possible conflicts of interest of, the President of the United States. The Hong Kong Dilemma

LL at Virtual Mirage - 17 hours ago
Three consecutive days of rallies, marches and clashes represent another escalation of the unrest. Many of the protesters carried American flags. Many of the protesters are said to be demanding a Bill of Rights, modeled on the American Bill of Rights, which is even more freedom than the people of Hong Kong enjoyed under British Crown rule. And that's really not what the Central Communist Party (CCP) on Mainland China wants. As a result, some in the PRC/Worker's Paradise blame the United States for the protests and for putting these notions of fair laws and freedom into their heads. ... more »

Each and every individual needs to be properly rooted to the land and that will become our human future as modernity trasitions properly to sustainable modernity. There will always be plenty to do, but haveing a robot handy will massively augment the quality of the lifeway. You are not going to ask the robot to walk the land and pull random weeds. You will task it with a repetative task that needs doing.
