China pushes back against US attempts to weaponize Taiwan against it

*FRIDAY, JULY 12, 2019Until you read The Atlantic (The Short):* As we noted yesterday, Miriam Jordan has presented a profile of the Lake Worth, Florida public schools which is deeply humane and intelligent. Her report concerns the challenges which may be faced by public schools with lots of immigrant kids. Jordan's intelligent, humane report appeared in Wednesday's New York Times! Juggling With The Authoritarians: Donald Trump’s Diplomatic Copy Book
The central theme to Trump’s copy book can be said to be this: to conserve a cosy position with one authoritarian regime necessitates a punitive approach to another. A calculus for the voter comes into play: you can only fool the electors some of the time. To that end, much has been leveraged on the anti-China sentiment and chest thumping before the Iranian mullahs.

Lakeside 2019, Week 4, Simon & Garfunkel and Mark Twain
Last night's tribute to Simon & Garfunkel by Nic and Alex Chamberlain was delightful. They love that era (although young enough to be the grandsons of many in the audience) and performed it well. We even got up and danced, despite my bursitis. And a super band--especially the pianist with the long blond pony-tail. Today is the second installment of Organizing 101. VFP members stuck in Ireland after anti-war protest
Yesterday the Irish High Court denied U.S. Veterans For Peace (VFP) members Tarak Kauff and Ken Mayers appeal of their bail conditions requiring them to stay in Ireland until their trial. "As soon as the judge opened his mouth," said Tarak, "I could tell he was going to deny the appeal. It's clearly political." This means that Tarak and Ken could be required to stay in Ireland for years, much longer than any possible penalty for their charges should they be found guilty. The judge said that if their charges are moved from the Circuit Court in County Clare (where it's not possibl... more »

The Most Dangerous On The Planet
Obamacare was never a simple, clean piece of legislation. Paul Krugman writes: The Affordable Care Act was an imperfect and incomplete reform. The political compromises needed to get it through Congress created a complex system in which too many people fall through the holes. It was also underfunded, which is why deductibles are often uncomfortably high. And the law has faced sabotage both from G.O.P.-controlled state governments and, since 2017, the Trump administration. Despite all that, however, the act has vastly improved many Americans’ lives — and in many cases, saved lives... more »
