JUST A REMINDER TO BRET STEPHENS OF WHICH RECENT U.S. PRESIDENT SPOKE THE MOST SPANISH

On the Gerrymandering Decision: Don't Mourn, Organize--and "Rise Up"
Thursdays decision by the Supreme Court declared that partisan gerrymandering is “non-justiciable.” Federal courts have been ordered to look the other way, regardless of the egregiousness of the attempt by entrenched political elites to choose their voters and thus maintain themselves in power. Almost all “progressive” groups, plus more non-partisan “good government” groups rightly bewail the decision. As Justice Kagan writes in dissent, the widespread use of ever-more sophisticated techniques of gerrymandering is a direct threat to our self-description as a democracy. But it is... more »

Jung On The Stages of Life
Carl JungCarl Gustav Jung, in his essay, “The Stages of Life,” (Chapter 1; *The Portable Jung*, Edited by Joseph Campbell; translated by R. F. C. Here’s an excerpt in which he is using the analogy of the sun’s motion to describe the difficulty a man faces in transitioning from the phase of mature adulthood to extreme old age: "Experience shows us, rather, that the basic cause of all the difficulties of this transi... more »

Day 6 on the road: bees, honey, good food and good company
Friday was a fun day, albeit a painful one for me. My spinal injury in 2004 resulted in permanent nerve damage. One of its effects is that, approximately every ten days to two weeks, on a variable schedule, I have a "bad pain day", for want of a better term. My injured nerves just throb and moan at me, and I have to increase my pain medication intake and restrict my physical activity until they decide to quieten down again - until the next time, anyway. Friday turned out to be one such day, probably sparked by several days on the road and about 1,600 miles covered so far. (The... more »

*Task and Purpose* *Security, Americas* [image: (U.S. Air Force photo by Devin Doskey)] Will they make the cut? *The Army's size puts it in greater need supporting soldiers in their physical fitness. * After nearly two decades of grinding low-intensity conflict, the U.S. military is shifting to focus on near-peer competition — and tailoring its physical fitness requirements accordingly. The Army is currently two-year assessment and rollout plan scheduled for 2020, with 470,205 soldiers are currently racing to prepare and train for a dramatically different six-event Army Combat F... more »
Russia Plans to Build Four Submarines Armed with Nuclear Drone-Torpedoes
*Sebastien Roblin* *Security, * Should America be worried? For decades, submarine nuclear deterrence has been uniquely provided by the nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine (SSBN), designed to loft missiles from beneath the waves into space before releasing multiple nuclear warheads that rain hellfire on cities and military bases below. SSBNs can remain submerged basically indefinitely thanks to their nuclear reactors, and are thus unlikely to be all hunted down prior to launch orders being issued. However, while Russia is planning to fully replace its older SSBNs with ei... more »
Russia vs. America: Su-35s Attack F-15s and F-16s (Who Wins?)
*TNI Staff* *Technology, Europe* [image: (U.S. Army National Guard Photo by Joseph Siemandel)] A what-if worth exploring. *While many were indeed designed and planned for ahead of the imposition of sanctions, Russia is clearly making a big effort to modernize its armed forces, especially its air force, and moving past older Soviet platforms. With an AESA, the F-16 ... more »

Not because of the glass windows that stand between me and the ferocious and unpredictable world outside. Not because of the locks on my doors (that can be picked at will by skillful hands). Why do I feel secure? Do I rest easy because I know that I have a portable safe inside of which lie two handguns that are preloaded? No. Let’s be real, when it comes to home defense, two handguns locked away in a safe aren’t g... more »
Upheld, upheld, upheld
Yes, complaining to the BBC does sometimes pay off. Here are three examples, published over the last three days. The latest one concerns Sally Bundock's infamous interview with Tim Martin of Wetherspoons. We previously posted an earlier BBC Complaints response to criticism that was typically 'BBC' in its refusal to admit wrongdoing - except that the BBC* has* now admitted wrongdoing. The directions of travel, bias-wise, here are interesting. The first suggests anti-Catalan independence bias, the second pro-transgender activism bias, and the third anti-Brexit bias. Enjoy! *Up... more »
