Photo Credit: via VOA *Editor’s Note: Government programs to combat violent extremism get far more media attention than resources, in part because it is not clear how to make these programs stronger. Jesse Morton, a former jihadist, and Mitchell Silber, the former NYPD director of intelligence, are working together to combat extremism. Drawing on their experience, they propose a series of practical steps the U.S. government could take to become more effective, focusing on the pre-criminal stage and recidivism, as well as proposing a more coherent bureaucratic division of labor.* ... more »

“Maybe we accept the dream has become a nightmare. We tell ourselves that reality is better. We convince ourselves it’s better that we never dream at all. But, the strongest of us, the most determined of us, holds on to the dream or we find ourselves faced with a fresh dream we never considered. We wake to find ourselves, against all odds, feeling hopeful. And, if we’re lucky, we realize in the face of everything, in the face of life the true dream is being able to dream at all.” - Dr. Meredith Grey, "Grey's Anatomy"

Heart of Darkness

Joseph ConradJoseph Conrad’s book *Heart of Darkness* is the story of a journey into the heart of Africa—up the Congo River and into the Congo Free State. The story has great insights on human nature. I think this book can also be seen as a work of philosophy. Here’s a description of a scene from the novel’s final pages: When Mr. Kurtz, the rogue ivory trader, dies his last words are: “The horror! The horror!” By then the novel’s narrator, Charles Marlow, is himself very ill—he is in the borderline between life and death when he contemplates about the sadness of life in these word... more »

Ayn Rand’s Mission Proselytization

Unknown at The Verma Report - 14 hours ago
The philosophies of the world can be divided into two broad categories: the philosophies that seek to explain and the philosophies that seek to proselytize. However, there are several philosophies that have components of both—they seek to explain as well as proselytize. Ayn Rand’s objectivist movement is, I think, focused mainly on proselytization—that is why the objectivists seem less devoted to philosophical research, and producing books and papers. They are mainly into organizing events and public meetings. One of the first steps that Rand took for objectivism was the creation of... more »

Battle of the Semi-Automatic Shotguns: Which Is the Best Gun?

Gun News Daily at The National Interest - 14 hours ago
*Gun News Daily* *Security, Americas* [image: Browning] We have some ideas. Semi-auto shotguns are the upgraded version of the pump-action shotguns we all know and love. They are prized for their quick firepower and reduction in recoil. They feel great to shoot. Emptying out a few cartridges in quick succession is a great way to unwind after a long day. Semi-autos aren’t necessarily as reliable as pump-action shotguns, however, their main advantage is reduced recoil and a very fast rate of fire. It Pays To Invest In Education

A new report commissioned by the Ontario Secondary Teachers Federation underscores the point that investing in public education is a good idea. The report is divided into two major sections. Jim Stanford writes: The first uses the Conference Board’s input-output model to simulate the immediate spin-off economic effects of public education spending. Education is a major driver of economic growth and job creation -- yet conservatives insist on treating it solely as a "cost" or "drain," something to be minimized rather than optimized. *Mayor Pete's star is shining bright* and causing a great bit of excitement with the Tinseltown crowd these days. But it seems Hollywood’s top heavy, fabulously dough loaded gay community isn't ready just yet to come forth and drench Mayor Pete with their big donations. Mayor Pete is facing a load of skepticism. And while Hollywood has helped seed the early stages of Buttigieg’s campaign, the biggest donors are skeptical of larger insertions because of Pete's lack of experience and a perceived inability to win in 2020. And many of Hollywood's gays are spreading their money around, c... more »

"The Lessons of Rome: Our Neofeudal Oligarchy"

noreply@blogger.com (CoyotePrime) at Running 'Cause I Can't Fly - 17 hours ago
*"The Lessons of Rome: Our Neofeudal Oligarchy"* by Charles Hugh Smith “The Inheritance of Rome: Illuminating the Dark Ages 400-1000”* is not an easy, breezy read; its length and detail are daunting. The effort is well worth it, as the book helps us understand how the power structures of societies change over time in ways that may be largely invisible to those living through the changes. “The Inheritance of Rome” focuses on the lasting influence of Rome's centralized social and political structures even as centralized economic power and trade routes dissolved. This legacy of centra...more »

Why is Turkey so Insistent on Buying Russian Missiles (And Missing Out on the F-35)?

Ali Demirdas at The National Interest - 18 hours ago
*Ali Demirdas* *Security, * Here are some possible answers. On June 5, 1964, then-President Lyndon Johnson sent a stern letter to Ismet Inonu, the then-prime minister of Turkey, urging him to abandon the imminent Turkish military intervention in Cyprus, which aimed at saving the fellow citizens from being massacred by the Greek-Cypriot EOKA militants. The letter was loaded with threats and ultimatums. Johnson admonished Inonu that the American weaponry provided to Turkey may not be used and an arms embargo would ensue. He further forewarned that such military action would result... more »

The F-35 Will Soon Have a New Missile to Hunt China's J-20 Stealth Fighter

Dario Leone at The National Interest - 18 hours ago
*Dario Leone* *Security, * Stealth vs. stealth? Lockheed Martin is developing a new air-dominance missile for the U.S. Air Force (USAF) and Navy with significantly greater range than the Raytheon AIM-120 AMRAAM (Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missile) as a counter to China’s new PL-15 weapon, a top U.S. Air Force official says. Anthony Genatempo, the Air Force’s program executive officer for weapons. “I... more »

The Super Scary SIG Machine Gun You've Never Heard Of

Charlie Gao at The National Interest - 18 hours ago
*Charlie Gao* *Security, * The legendary SIG MG 710-3. One of the greatest revolutions in military small arms occurred during WWII. The German MG34 and MG42 almost totally revolutionized light machine guns. Prior to the war, most nations fielded light, magazine-fed machine guns as the light machine guns in a weapons platoon or section. After the war, almost everyone wanted a light belt fed for that role. The Soviets developed the RPD, the Americans slowly developed the M60, but most of the world adopted the FN MAG. The Germans, Italians, and some other nations simply adapted the... more »

“Preventive War…”

noreply@blogger.com (CoyotePrime) at Running 'Cause I Can't Fly - 18 hours ago
"All of us have heard this term "preventive war" since the earliest days of Hitler. I recall that is about the first time I heard it. In this day and time, if we believe for one second that nuclear fission and fusion, that type of weapon, would be used in such a war — what is a preventive war? I would say a preventive war, if the words mean anything, is to wage some sort of quick police action in order that you might avoid a terrific cataclysm of destruction later. A preventive war, to my mind, is an impossibility today. How could you have one if one of its features would be severa... more »
