Saudi 'Critic' Khashoggi Disappears - How Will Washington React?
What happened to Jamal Khashoggi? The Washington Post writer and friend of long-time Saudi intelligence head has been hailed as a "critic" of Saudi policy, but that reputation is not very well-deserved. Was he killed by the Saudis? Kidnapped? What might it mean for US/Saudi relations? Tune in to today's Liberty Report:
US-Saudi Relations Enter Unchartered Waters
[image: undefined] The disappearance of the Saudi dissident Jamal Khashoggi in mysterious circumstances while on a visit to his country’s consulate in Istanbul last Tuesday still remains unexplained. The plot is thickening by the day. The latest reports suggest that he may not even be alive. The Istanbul Prosecutor has ordered an investigation. President Recep Erdogan has called Khashoggi a “journalist and friend”. Turkey has a troubled relationship with Saudi Arabia, which has a complicated history dating back to the Ottoman era and is entangled with Erdogan’s brand of Islamism. A... more »

"Life Is Inconvenient..."
"One of life's best coping mechanisms is to know the difference between an inconvenience and a problem. If you break your neck, if you have nothing to eat, if your house is on fire – then you’ve got a problem. Everything else is an inconvenience. Life is inconvenient. Life is lumpy. A lump in the oatmeal, a lump in the throat and a lump in the breast are not the same kind of lump. One needs to learn the difference." - Robert Fulghum

*"Mind and Heart"* "Unaccountably we are alone, forever alone, and it was meant to be that way, it was never meant to be any other way - and when the death struggle begins the last thing I wish to see is a ring of human faces hovering over me - better just my old friends, the walls of my self, let only them be there. I have been alone but seldom lonely. I have satisfied my thirst at the well of my self and that wine was good, the best I ever had, and tonight, sitting, staring into the dark I now finally understand the dark and the light and everything in between. Peace of mind and heart... more »

"Why?"
"Is there an answer to the question of why bad things happen to good people? The response would be… to forgive the world for not being perfect, to forgive God for not making a better world, to reach out to the people around us, and to go on living despite it all, no longer asking why something happened, but asking how we will respond, what we intend to do now that it has happened." - Harold S. If power-to-gas (P2G) is the answer, what was the question?
Over at Green Car Congress, "Scottish Scientist" gushes about P2G: Power to Gas (P2G) is best for (solar, wind etc.) farm-scale energy storage for most farms where there is no possibility of farm-scale pumped hydro. P2G is excellent for mopping up all the surplus farm power because any energy which P2G can store is an efficiency gain compared to the 100% loss of all curtailed generation. Grid

Capitalism Has Been Conquered - Here Is Why Workers Should Take It Back
In the early days of industrial capitalism there were no protections for workers, and industrialists took their profits with little heed to anyone else. Following the growth of the labour movement, the establishment of trade unions and the founding of the welfare state in the first half of the 20th century, corporations in decades after World War II embraced a more open, stakeholder capitalism, where profits were shared between employees, managers and shareholders. This led to a flourishing middle class as workers and communities benefited from the success of the corporations of w... more »

Their nationalist propaganda was directed toward their fellow-travelers and not their convinced members; the latter, on the contrary, were never allowed to lose sight of a consistently supranational approach to politics. While some of Canada's mainstream media, particularly the Globe and Mail as shown here: ...is lauding the recent signing of the new USMCA trilateral trade agreement with the United States and Mexico, the devil, as always, is in the details, many of which have not been covered by the media. Let's look at one particular Article that shows us how the Trudeau - Freeland negotiating team has sold Canada's trade sovereignty all in the name of striking a flawed agreement. Here is part of what the Canadian government has to say about the USMCA: "*Canada, the United States and Mexico have... more »
OH CRAP, NOT THIS AGAIN
In a conversation posted on the *New York Times* website, two of the paper's op-ed columnists, Bret Stephens and Gail Collins, agree on one thing: They have no idea what the Democrats' agenda for 2020 is. This emerges from a discussion of the big *Times* story about the Trump family's money. Stephens says: Of course, the larger issue is a tax code that’s filled with so many loopholes that it allows the ultrarich to game the system. How about lower rates for all and exemptions for none? To which Collins replies: I might buy into that. The Democrats need to come up with a compelling,... more »

The United Nations has just told us that we have twelve years to prevent a global catastrophe. Global warning will soon have disastrous consequences. Is The Big Standardized Test A Big Standardized Flop?
Since No Child Left Behind first rumbled onto the scene, the use of a Big Standardized Test to drive accountability and measure success has been a fundamental piece of education reform. But recently, some education reform stalwarts are beginning to express doubts. There are plenty of reasons to doubt the validity of the Big Standardized Test, be it PARCC or SBA or whatever your state is using these days. After almost two decades of its use, we've raised an entire generation of students around the notion of test-based accountability, and yet the fruits of that seem.... well, elusive. ... more »
How the Navy Sent 4 of Its Most Deadly Battleships To Attack North Korea
*Robert Farley* *Security, Asia* The very presence of the battleships may have had some degree of psychological effect on Communist and UN forces alike. In the final months of the Second World War, the battleships of the U.S. Navy (USN) ranged across the archipelago of Japan, bombarding industrial, military and logistical targets at will. The Japanese military lacked enough ships, planes and fuel to defend the nation, leaving coastal areas at the mercy of the steel behemoths. The Moody Blues, “Your Wildest Dreams”
"Eternal Enemies..."
"Liberty and democracy are eternal enemies, and every one knows it who has ever given any sober reflection to the matter. A democratic state may profess to venerate the name, and even pass laws making it officially sacred, but it simply cannot tolerate the thing. In order to keep any coherence in the governmental process, to prevent the wildest anarchy in thought and act, the government must put limits upon the free play of opinion. In part, it can reach that end by mere propaganda, by the bald force of its authority - that is, by making certain doctrines officially infamous. But i... more »

First dominant pure Czech bank may be being born
For centuries, Czechs have been savers who were conservative when it came to their finances. A consequence was that they trusted "our" currencies, preferred all payments and savings to be done in the domestic currency, and the currency was correspondingly stable. Relatively to our communist comrades, we had a hard currency during communism, too. Westerners have usually no clue about the huge differences between the individual post-communist countries. For example, Hungary has accumulated a huge debt and their forint has always been inflating and weak; Czechoslovakia has never had th... more »

A new book reveals how Jacques Jaujard worked out a modus vivendi with the Nazis of civil co-existence which helped him to oversee the evacuation of Louvre’s treasures including the Mona Lisa (pictured being returned to Louvre in 1945) during World War II. Egypt has officially demanded Libya to extradite the country’s most wanted man Hisham Ashmawy after his surprising arrest earlier in Libya. I think within hours the man who was sentenced to death in Egypt in at least two military trials, will be transferred back home. Might Astronauts Be Able To Dive Through A Liquid Airlock Into A Lunar Cave Habitat From The Surface Vacuum? (Like A Barometer)
This is a rather fun idea originally suggested in the Moon Miner's Manifest Classics - 1987-1988 (see page 31). It's not so likely in the early stages, because of the large amounts of water needed to construct it, but it may perhaps be of great value at a later stage, especially for bases that have a lot of traffic in and out. If the liquid is water, it has to be over sixty meters deep (62.3 meters), to equalize the pressure inside and outside the habitat. The depth can be much less, if it is a denser fluid. You then don't need any doors but can just dive through it and come out on... more »

Teach Your Children Well
I was a dj on my college radio station, WUSB. I was also the chairman of the Student Activities Board and put on all these great concerts by bands like the Doors, Jimi Hendrix, the Dead, the Airplane, the Byrds, Joni Mitchell, Otis Redding, The Four Tops, Ravi Shankar, Muddy Waters, Love... I got tapes in the mail... like everyday. In 1969 I was getting ready to cut out and go the Europe before officially graduating. I had heard this new group's first song, "Marrakech Express," and I remember it because I was planning to go there. But I wasn't moved enough by it to ask the band t... more »

The Poet: Mary Oliver, “Wild Geese”
*“Wild Geese”* "You do not have to be good. You do not have to walk on your knees for a hundred miles through the desert repenting. You only have to let the soft animal of your body love what it loves. Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine. Meanwhile the world goes on. Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain are moving across the landscapes, over the prairies and the deep trees, the mountains and the rivers. Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air, are heading home again. Whoever you are, no matter how lonely, the world offers itself to your imagi... more »

Yes, We Can Rise To The IPCC Target To Keep Global Warming Within 1.5°C (2.7°F)
The basic message of the IPCC report is that we need to act now before 2040, to avoid more expensive mitigation measures in the last 60 years of the century. The worst effects are for 2100. And that if we aim for 1.5°C, it is far better than 2.5°C. read more
