An amphibious ship could do the job or a battleship, but a compromise of both — with the inherent shortcomings of an compromise — would not have brought anything particularly compelling to the table.* In the early 1980s, the Reagan Administrati... more »

*August 7, 2018 *(Tony Cartalucci - NEO) - US designs in Syria were made crystal clear by US Army General Joseph Votel - head of US Central Command (CENTCOM) - during a July 19th press briefing. General Votel would state unequivocally when asked what the "arrangement" was regarding Syria, that: *Our mission is very, very clear: It is focusing on the defeat of ISIS and then helping our partners in both Iraq and Syria stabilize the situation and specifically in Iraq to help create a platform that can lead to a long-term political solution through the U.N. process.* Several aspects o... more »
A Return To Military Conscription In Germany?
*DW: **Germans debate return of military conscription and service for men and women* Germany's ruling CDU party has launched a debate on reinstating military conscription and offering young men and women a chance to serve their country in other ways. A recent poll shows Germans are in favor of the idea. As the German military struggles to fill its ranks, representatives of Angela Merkel's CDU party started a nationwide discussion on the return of mandatory military service. The general conscription was scrapped in 2011 after Berlin decided to professionalize its troops. Prior to... more »

CDR Salamander slams the military procurement process
CDR Salamander excoriates the USAF's recent light attack experiment, and in the process has some harsh words for the entire military procurement process. When we actually have a no-kidding shooting war on our hands, our Soldiers and Marines die because they don’t have the support they need and have to execute missions with more risk. We expend untold millions of additional monies and airframe time shoe-horning other assets to do a job they are not designed to do, and they do it in a suboptimal manner when they do. * . . .* Taxpayer money wasted and their sons and daughters die unn... more »

Should The U.S. Build Artificial Island Bases?
*Next Big Future*: *USA should build artificial island bases for allies in the age of hypersonic missiles* No one has effective anti-hypersonic missile systems now and there is no anti-hypersonic missile system in development that looks to be very effective or near deployment. The US could also spend a few billion dollars for a dredging fleet. The US could help allied countries build artificial islands in key locations li... more »

180 Seconds to Death: Israel Shot Down 5 Deadly Russian MiGs in 3 Minutes

And all in three minutes. *Today, Israel, America and Russia seem to be trying to avoid a clash over Syria. But as in 1970, proximity risks conflict, as when U.S. air strikes killed hundreds, including Russian mercenaries. As Israel attacks Syrian targets, or Iranian forces inside Syria, it's not hard to envision a scenario where Russian interceptors or air defense units confront Israeli aircraft. If attacked, Israel will fight back. As in 1970, one wonder... more »

Comedians Have Totally Ruined The Art of Political Humor
I recently read that The Daily Show host Trevor Noah, who some say is funny(?) had used his show to make a preachy, lengthy speech about the nature of national identity, arguing that he’s right to celebrate the French World Cup players as both French and African. Why anyone would really care is beyond me. Here we go again. That we are doing plenty of things that are stupid does not mean that stupidity is sustainable. China-India-Plus-One Could See OBOR And The AAGC Converge In Africa
If China and India joined forces to coordinate their developmental policies towards a certain African state or even entire region as a whole, then they’d remove the chance for any wasteful redundancies between them and resultantly improve the efficiency of their comprehensive strategies. The Turtle Is Starting Two Years Early To Win His Race In Kentucky
In 2014 Mitch McConnell looked like he might have a tough time being reelected. In fact, he spent a colossal $30,435,557 in the effort, not counting $22,250,563 that SuperPACs spent supporting him and sliming his Democratic opponent, Alison Grimes. And before McConnell could get to Grimes he had to fight off a primary from the more extreme right-- Matt Bevin, now governor, then just a random insane rich person, spent $4,485,900 against McConnell, $1,239,648 was self-funded. McConnell beat Bevin handily in the primary 213,753 (60.2%) to 125,787 (35.4%). There was a warning in that ... more »

What Hiroshima Can Teach Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un
*Michael Peck* *Security, Asia* "Hiroshima should teach Trump and Kim that even if history does not always reach a verdict, it always conducts a trial." It has been 73 years since an atomic bomb destroyed Hiroshima, and have Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un learned anything? When a U.S. president threatens to rain "fire and fury" on North Korea, the unspoken menace is of atomic hellfire. When the Dear Leader of North Korea says the nuclear launch button is "always on my table," he signals that the next Korean War will be announced by mushroom clouds. Russia’s Only Aircraft Carrier Will Get New MiG-29s
*Dave Majumdar* *Security, Europe* Kuznetsov is an old design that dates back to the late Soviet-era and at some point she will have to be replaced. However, a new Russian carrier is mostly a theoretical discussion at this point because Moscow currently lacks the resources to build such vessels until at least 2025. Russia’s sole remaining aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov will have to be modified to handle its new complement of Mikoyan MiG-29KR Fulcrum-K multirole fighters when it returns to service. The massive dilapidated Soviet-era vessel entered into dry-dock for repairs an... more »
Why Russia Won't Go Bankrupt Paying for Its Military Buildup
*Michael Peck* *Security, Europe* Despite Putin's constant boasts of advanced weapons, such as nuclear super-torpedoes and hypersonic missiles, the GPV 2027 plan will achieve much more modest goals. One reason the Soviet Union collapsed was that Moscow went broke trying to keep up with the United States in the Cold War arms race. So, with today's Russia embarking on an ambitious military modernization program, perhaps Moscow will go broke again? Not likely. "On a most basic level, by 2027 the Russian armed forces should be considerably better equipped than they are today," accor... more »

The Top Five Things To Always Look For When Buying Butter
Butter is one of the staple foods in millions of households, and for good reason as it also happens to be one of the healthiest foods out there — as long as you buy the right kind, of course. In 2005, butter finally broke loose from its nutritional banishment and reclaimed its top spot from longtime rival margarine, which was originally developed by a French chemist way back in 1869. Lately butter sales have been spurred even more by health trends like the Paleo Diet and Bulletproof Coffee, which centers around mixing grass-fed butter with coffee for a nourishing and stimulati... more »
Rollo May, "Courage"
*"Courage"* by Rollo May "We are living at a time when one age is dying and the new age is not yet born. We cannot doubt this as we look about us to see the radical changes in sexual mores, in marriage styles, in family structures, in education, in religion, technology, and almost every other aspect of modern life. And behind it all is the threat of the atom bomb, which recedes into the distance but never disappears. To live with sensitivity in this age of limbo indeed requires courage. A choice confronts us. Shall we, as we feel our foundations shaking, withdraw in anxiety and... more »

"Will our Sun look like this one day? The Helix Nebula is one of brightest and closest examples of a planetary nebula, a gas cloud created at the end of the life of a Sun-like star. The remnant central stellar core, destined to become a white dwarf star, glows in light so energetic it causes the previously expelled gas to fluoresce. *Click image for larger size.* The Helix Nebula, given a technical designation of NGC 7293, lies about 700 light-years away towards the const... more »

*"Starlight"* by Chet Raymo "Poor Calvin is overwhelmed with the vastness of the cosmos and no small dose of existential angst. He is not the first, of course.
