What sounds better, "half a trillion" or "$500,000 billion?" Either way, that's how much the national debt Trump and his GOP enablers plan to leave American taxpayers jumped in the last 6 months. That's an all-time high ($21.4 trillion), complements of a fake president whose only certifiable talent is going bankrupt. Worse: as the debt continues to rise, the pace of growth has slowed this year. Trump's always been a "What, Me Worry?" kind of guy. For his entire miserable life, someone else has cleaned up after him. No one in their right mind could have thought his stay in the Whit... more »

Quite possibly. Consider that the US navy does not have to send a warship — it possesses many different kinds of vessels that are utterly unwarlike, from research vessels to hospital ships to repair vessels to ordinary cargo vessels. A smart salami slicing style move would be to send one of those, then gasp in mock astonishment when China goes into parox... more »

There is something vaguely Trumpian in Premier Stephen McNeil’s continuing, reality-be-damned insistence his government’s 2015 consultation- and logic-free decision to dump a longstanding, working-well film tax credit, then replace it with a more restrictive, less incentivizing “Nova Scotia Film and Television Incentive Fund” is all working out just fine, the way we planned it, thank […]

Randy Bryce Won His Primary Tuesday-- Now Comes The Hard Part

Tuesday's primaries in Connecticut, Vermont, Wisconsin and Minnesota added up to a very good day for Democrats and for progressives up and down the ballots. In every state and in every contested congressional election, far more votes were cast in Democratic races than in Republican races. That's a clear indication of Democratic enthusiasm and Republican lack thereof. Let's take Vermont, a state that went for Hillary, and Wisconsin, a state that went for Trump, as examples. Both states had highly contested gubernatorial races. Democrats overwhelmingly nominated progressive Christin... more »

There are times when I think I could write about Florida all the time. The state's legislators lead the nation in outright hostility to public education and indifference to children. And this time they're really outdoing them with some Franken-bill known as Amendment 8. Amendment 8 was produced by the Florida Constitution Revision Commission, which voted to put it on the ballot as an amalgam of three amendments to the state constitution. We're well past the point of using lipstick. One amendment would mandate "civic literacy" as a subject in public schools. One would weaken school ... more »

It was four years ago, August 2014, that a senior CDC scientist—Dr. William Thompson–claimed whistleblower protection by claiming that the CDC had committed fraud by hiding and manipulating data that showed the MMR vaccine was associated with a higher risk of autism. According to the CDC, we are currently suffering through an exponential increase in autism since the 1970s. In 1970, the autism rate was 1 in 10,000. In 2018, the rate of autism epidemically increased to 1 in 59 children. That is a 169-fold increase in autism in U.S. children over nearly 50 years! You would think a sen... more »

“How is one to live a moral and compassionate existence when one is fully aware of the blood, the horror inherent in life, when one finds darkness not only in one’s culture but within oneself? One must live in the middle of contradiction, because if all contradiction were eliminated at once life would collapse. There are simply no answers to some of the great pressing questions.
