Update on Inside Story about General Dynamics Corporate Welfare
*On the Skowhegan bridge here in Maine over the weekend - even the snow creatures are not pleased with the plan to give $60 million to General Dynamics* We are still waiting for a bill number to be assigned to the corporate welfare bill in Augusta that would give $60 million to the well-endowed General Dynamics Corporation - the 5th largest weapons company on planet Earth. The Post has compiled such data for the past three years. To review those data, click here. The Post provides a valuable journalistic service by compiling these (imperfect) lists. This morning, the paper offers a front-page report about last year's numbers. As we read the Post's report, a basic thought crossed our mind. That basic thought goes something like this: *You rarely encounter a sensible discussion of any topic with... more »

Political correctness strikes again in entertainment
I consider myself at least a well-informed amateur historian. I've studied the subject for, literally, decades, and of the books in my personal library, I'd guess a good half of them are concerned with one or another historical incident, accident or trend. I use that background to inform a lot of my own writing. One of the cardinal rules of the historian is that one should never, repeat, NEVER evaluate an earlier period of history through the 'filters' of the customs, attitudes and morals of a later period, including one's own. *UK to end 140 years of coal power by 2025* *This is amusing. The article below skates over what they use to replace coal when the sun isn't shining (normal in Britain) and the wind isn't blowing. They use gas mostly but also have a great fleet of diesel generators and also burn wood. And both those latter emit MORE CO2 than coal. Another example of the Green/Left being borderline insane* Britain will end its use of coal in power plants by 2025 after more than 140 years burning the fossil fuel. The Government confirmed that its 2015 pledge to phase out coal-fired power within a... more »
"Bernie Supporters Love the Republican Tax Plan"
https://youtu.be/-33SQ_2fEoc This is the problem over and over again, people learn what's in a Republican (Conservative in the UK) policy from the biased media and so oppose that policy. That or they automatically oppose anything that comes from parties of the centre right. In this particular instance I've said since Donald Trump entered the race to become Republican nominee that he was not really a Republican and that his economic policies had more in common with those of Bernie Sanders than those of most of the Republican Party.
Three Anthopocenes
A few weeks back I read an interesting essay by Jedediah Purdy on Aeon written in the halcyon days of 2015. An article which, given the news, captured something essential and got me a little depressed. Within the space of the last three weeks hurricanes of almost unprecedented magnitude slammed into Houston, then, Florida, then Puerto Rico. All were bad, but the last looked something like something straight out of a Hollywood apocalyptic. It wasn’t just the scale of the storm that hit it which made the situation in Puerto Rico so much more dire, it was the lack of resources to dea... more »

Twenty years ago, during the height of the “revolution in military affairs” craze, the aircraft carrier was written off as a dinosaur. Will Ayn Rand Survive Postmodernism?
In his article, “Objectivism: An Autopsy, Part 3,” Greg Nyquist says that he sees Objectivism as an overreaction to the Soviet Union’s communist system of which Ayn Rand had a first hand experience. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, communism mutated into postmodernism which has acquired a powerful intellectual, cultural and political base in the world. As Rand did not have any first hand experience with postmodernism, her philosophy does not offer any clear solutions to the problems that the world faces today. Here’s an excerpt from the final paragraph of Nyquist’s article: ... more »

The US, Russia and China have all noted that dominance in this field of technology will be an essential ingredient to holding global primacy in the near future. What resembles a sort of arms race has emerged between prominent nations around the globe. Perhaps in an effort to provide the US with an ed... more »

Worst White House Occupant Ever? What About His GOP Enablers?
Señor Trumpanzee is flipping out over Michael Wolff’s book-- completely deranged-- and claiming he’s “stable” and “a genius” and that Bannon has an 80 IQ. Trump is insane and should be impeached immediately under the terms of the 25th Amendment. The voters should deal with the Republicans who, knowing full well that Trump is a dangerous sociopath, enabled him anyway-- especially Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell. They’re more aware than most of Trump’s unfitness for office. But they don’t care, as long as he signs legislation that harms working families perceived as being supporters of... more »

"A Look to the Heavens"
"The combined light of stars along the Milky Way are reflected by these cosmic dust clouds that soar some 300 light-years or so above the plane of our galaxy. Dubbed the Angel Nebula, the faint apparition is part of an expansive complex of dim and relatively unexplored, diffuse molecular clouds. Commonly found at high galactic latitudes, the dusty galactic cirrus can be traced over large regions toward the North and South Galactic poles. *Click image for larger size.* Along with the refection of starlight, studies indicate the dust clouds produce a faint reddish luminescence, as int... more »

*“I’d Rather Be In Hell”* by Paulo Coelho "As soon as he died, Juan found himself in a gorgeous place, surrounded by all the comfort and beauty he had dreamed of. A fellow dressed in white approached him and said, “You have the right to have whatever you want; any food, pleasure or amusement.” Charmed, Juan did everything he dreamed of doing during his life. After many years of pleasures, he sought the fellow in white and asked, “I have already experienced everything I wanted. Now I need to work in order to feel useful.” “I am sorry,” said the fellow in white, “but that is the only... more »
The Poet: Mary Oliver, “The Spirit Likes To Dress Up”
*“The Spirit Likes To Dress Up”* "The spirit likes to dress up like this: ten fingers, ten toes, shoulders, and all the rest, at night in the black branches, in the morning in the blue branches of the world. ․ It could float, of course, but would rather plumb rough matter. Airy and shapeless thing, it needs the metaphor of the body, lime and appetite, the oceanic fluids; it needs the body's world, instinct and imagination, and the dark hug of time, sweetness and tangibility, to be understood, to be more than pure light that burns where no one is - so it ... more »
Chet Raymo, “Try To Remember…”
*“Try To Remember…”* by Chet Raymo “In a sleepless hour of the night, I was trying to remember the last name of a person I have known well for more than forty years. When my spouse stirred in her sleep, I asked her. She couldn't remember either. One again I started mentally through the alphabet. "I think it starts with B," I said. Ten minutes later she rolled over and said, "The next letter is R." Bingo! The name popped into my head. Or I should say, "popped out of my head." Because it was in there somewhere, recorded in a tangle of neurons as materially as if it were written on a ... more »
