Today is the deadline for Donald Trump to sign off on the Russia sanctions. Think he'll do it? Update!
Courtesy of Politico: *President Donald Trump’s willingness to crack down on Russia will be seriously tested come Monday. * *Trump faces a major deadline to use the Russia sanctions power that Congress overwhelmingly voted to give him — and it’s anybody’s guess as to whether he’ll comply on time after missing the last deadline. * *Scrutiny is high, amid lingering suspicion of Trump’s eagerness to mend fences with Russia and with special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation still digging into election meddling by Moscow. Will There Be a Tory Leadership Challenge?
War is hell. Unless we're seeing Tory rising against Tory, then it's entertainment. And what an entertaining weekend it has been. "Call Me" Philip Hammond stirred a hornets' nest by simply setting out the government's current positioning on Brexit. That Britain is looking at continued close alignment with the European Union after Brexit is, of course, the most sensible course of action to take provided you don't want to tank the economy. And yet this position, which is more or less remaining in the Customs Union without it being called 'staying in the Customs Union', has been the c... more »

Lessons From the Tet Offensive, A Half Century Later
*Paul R. Pillar* *Vietnam Military Intervention, East Asia* Fifty years ago this Tuesday, communist forces launched the assaults across South Vietnam known as the Tet Offensive. The offensive marked an inflection point in the Vietnam War. President Lyndon Johnson denied a request the following month from his military commander in Vietnam, William Westmoreland, for 206,000 more U.S. troops on top of the more than half a million that already were there after years of escalation. Johnson turned to diplomacy in a search for a peace settlement and announced he would not run for re-... more »

Musical Interlude: 2002, "Remember Now"
“You think you will never forget any of this, you will remember it always just the way it was. But you can't remember it the way it was. To know it, you have to be living in the presence of it right as it is happening. It can return only by surprise. Speaking of these things tells you that there are no words for them that are equal to them or that can restore them to your mind. Ruthless Truth: The BBC is Racist - A point of view

Why would it be irredeemably racist to cast a white actor to play Nelson Mandela, but uber anti-racist to have a black man play Admiral Nelson? It all comes down to the BBC's view of racism. Delving Further Into Trump’s Damaged Psyche: Defiance Disorder Is The New Buzz
*-by Helen Klein* Trump’s mental health should continue to be front and center of our country’s concerns. Even perhaps above his obstruction, collusion with the Russians and money laundering. Unfortunately, it is not. It is not being taken seriously enough, not by a long shot, and the consequences may be devastating for us and for the entire planet. In an interview for Salon in November, John Gartner, psychologist at Johns Hopkins, states, "This is the greatest psychiatric emergency in the history of the United States and maybe in the history of the world." The Last Fed Chairman?
[image: undefined] Last week the Senate confirmed Jerome Powell as Federal Reserve Chairman by a vote of 84-13. This is in contrast to the contentious debates and closer votes over Janet Yellen’s confirmation in 2014 and Ben Bernanke’s confirmation for a second term in 2010. Powell benefited from a perception that the economy’s recovery from the 2007-08 meltdown proves that the Fed is a capable manager of monetary policy. However, the perceptions of economic recovery and Federal Reserve competence are both far from the truth. The economy may seem to have recovered, but the recovery... more »

America’s National Defense Is Really Offense
[image: undefined] On Friday, the Pentagon released an unclassified summary of the 2018 National Defense Strategy report. On the same day, Secretary of Defense James Mattis delivered prepared remarks relating to the document. Reading the summary is illuminating, to say the least, and somewhat disturbing, as it focuses very little on actual defense of the realm and relates much more to offensive military action that might be employed to further certain debatable national interests. Occasionally, it is actually delusional, as when it refers to consolidating “gains we have made in Afg... more »
FBI-Gate? #ReleaseTheMemo
Though dead-enders can't let go, the fact is "Russia-gate" is on the wane for lack of any kind of evidence. Pentagon's New 'Cold War' Strategy: Peace...Or War Profits?
The Pentagon has just released its 2018 National Defense Strategy for the United States. After at least 18 years of being told that international terrorism is the number one threat to the United States and that we must spend enormous amounts of money ($11 trillion since 2001) fighting it, we are now told that terrorism is no longer a big threat. The new biggest threat that we must spend more mountains of money defeating? Russia and China! Who benefits from this official return to the Cold War? The military-industrial complex. Who loses? The rest of us. More on the Pentagon's "Orwell... more »
Playing ‘Kurdish Card’ in Syria Backfires on US As Turks Move In
[image: undefined] What the result will be of Turkey’s offensive against the Kurdish-held enclave of Afrin in northwest Syria may not be clear for a while, but two things are already certain. Bad decisions in Washington provided the trigger, and Washington’s regional position will suffer as a result of Ankara’s Orwellian-named “Operation Olive Branch.” The offensive is the latest twist from Turkey’s erratic and unpredictable leader, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Let’s recall that “Sultan” Erdogan was an early and active participant in what was supposed to have been a relatively e... more »
Destroying, Suppressing Evidence is FBI Standard Procedure

VP Pence At Olympics To Prevent North Korea Peace Overtures
Relations between North and South Korea have taken a surprisingly positive turn this year. Bilateral negotiations between the North and South began the thaw just after the New Year, and then an announcement of unprecedented North/South joint participation in the coming Olympic games leaves us wondering how far this cooperation might go. Meanwhile, Washington casts a skeptical eye on the big thaw. The Trump Administration has bet the bank that the only way to handle North Korea is with sanctions and threats. That has not worked. With North/South rapprochement become the big story at t... more »
Trump’s National Defense Strategy Has the Pentagon Popping Champagne
[image: undefined] Here’s what we can say about the Trump administration’s just-released National Defense Strategy: it’s not a strategy and its subject is not defense. Bearing the imprimatur of Pentagon chief James Mattis, the NDS—at least the unclassified summary that we citizens are permitted to see—is in essence a brief for increasing the size of the U.S. military budget. Implicit in the document is this proposition: more spending will make the armed forces of the United States “stronger” and the United States “safer.” Simply put, the NDS is all about funneling more bucks to the... more »
Is FBI Lying About 'Russiagate'?
Are we supposed to believe that a critical five months of text messages between two plotting (and illicitly connected) anti-Trump FBI agents have disappeared due to technical errors? Much more likely -- and more commonly, as Jim Bovard points out in a recent Hill article -- it is the FBI manipulating evidence and destroying evidence to keep the public from knowing what they really are up to. In this case, it appears FBI agents were colluding with others in the US intelligence community to: 1) prevent Donald Trump from being elected president; and then 2) when that didn't work, to un... more »
It’s Time We Saw Economic Sanctions For What They Really Are – War Crimes

Why Does Washington Hate Bashar al-Assad?
[image: undefined] The Donald Trump administration is planning to install a 30,000 strong armed “security force” in northern Syria along the borders with Turkey and Iraq. This presumably will tie together and support the remaining rag-tags of allegedly pro-democracy rebels and will fit in with existing and proposed US bases. The maneuver is part of a broader plan to restructure Syria to suit the usual crop of neocon geniuses in Washington that have slithered their way back into the White House and National Security Council, to include renewed demands that the country’s President Bas... more »
Turkey Vs. Syrian Kurds: Whose Side Are We On?
With Ankara's recent military incursion into Syria to fight Afrin-based Kurdish forces, the US finds itself in a bizarre proxy war with its longtime NATO ally, Turkey. Turkish airplanes are literally taking off from the same airbase to bomb the Kurds as American planes are taking off from to arm the Kurds. US policy in Syria to create an autonomous Kurdish region to facilitate the continued (illegal) US military presence in the country is reckless and unsustainable. It is also absurd. For more on this strange state of affairs, tune in to today's Liberty Report:

What to Really Expect From the Government Shutdown
[image: undefined] It’s deja-vu all over again, as baseball legend Yogi Berra might have said. The politicians and media are telling us the world is coming to an end because a “compromise” could not be made at the 11th hour to keep the Federal government in business. Republicans blame Democrats for the shutdown over their insistence on legislation to benefit about 700,000 “Dreamers” -- immigrants who were brought illegally in to the country as children. Democrats make the shutdown all about Donald Trump, hoping to gain political points from his unpopular status. The media headlines... more »

Turkey sent armored divisions into northwest Syria after a day of airstrikes as part of 'Operation Olive Branch' which bombed Kurdish YPG forces ("People's Protection Units") in and around Afrin to drive the US-allied Kurdish militia from the area. Donald Trump's been crossing his arms a lot, lately. And while body language experts say that not arm crossers do it for the same reason, a cop trained in interrogations and the body language presented will tell you that Donald Trump (who will soon be interviewed by Robert Mueller) has a lot to hide. Take the fact that when he crosses his arms, he always hides his hands, which one can construe as further proof that he's been being closed-minded, guarded. Or, as others have intimated, he could be hiding hand tremors, as incipient palsy is common among the elderly. It s... more »

Cleveland Baseball Club To Abandon Racist Chief Wahoo Logo Next Year
The divisive and hotly debated Chief Wahoo logo is being removed from the Cleveland Indians’ uniform next year. The polarizing mascot is coming off the team’s jersey sleeves and caps starting in the 2019 season, a move that will end Chief Wahoo’s presence on the field but may not completely silence those who deem it racist. After lengthy discussions between team owner Paul Dolan and MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred, the Indians are taking the extraordinary step of shelving the big-toothed, smiling, red-faced caricature, which has been used in used in various expressions by the team si... more »
BREAKING: Mogul discovers no one will be true!
*MONDAY, JANUARY 29, 2018Josh Marshall ponders the Times: * We came upon Josh Marshall's post at roughly 5:45 this morning. It was too painful to read the whole thing. We set it aside until later. Later has come! Josh seems to have gotten the wrong impression from the Schmidt/Haberman "bombshell report"—the report we first discussed last Saturday and began to review this morning. In our view, Josh likely got the wrong impression because, in a perhaps maybe possibly typical way, Schmidt and Haberman (and their editor) may have wanted him to. Quite plainly, the bombshell report b... more »

“You Want Rights? Well, Sunshine… Here’s What You’re Missing”
*“You Want Rights? Well, Sunshine… Here’s What You’re Missing”* So Many Rights, So Little Understanding by Chris at https://capitalistexploits.at/signup/ "Sometimes when I sit down to share my thoughts with you I know I'm going to piss off a bunch of people. Today is one of those days. So if you're bitterly hostile, suffer from low self esteem, have nihilistic tendencies, and offer to the world a bag full of self contempt and not much else, then you need to read on. You'll hate me for it but really... this is for you! You've been fighting for all sorts of "rights" and sadly society i... more »
Why is Russia Helping Turkey in Afrin?
*Oped Via Al Jazeera* Image from Al Jazeera *The narrative below, excerpted from the oped, works for me. It jibes with much of what I've posted here this past YEAR.* *"On January 20, Turkey launched an air and ground offensive, which it called "Olive Branch", against the Kurdish-controlled enclave of Afrin in northern Syria.* *As the offensive progressed rapidly, it became obvious that such an ambitious operation could not have been possible without Russia's explicit approval.* *First of all, the operation required the Turkish Air Force to enter Syria's airspace - something Ankara... more »

The most cost-effective binoculars I've ever owned
A few years ago I wrote about the usefulness of binoculars in emergency situations, following that article with another on how to choose the right low-cost binoculars for your needs. I stand by most of my recommendations in those articles; but technology has improved to the point that many of my earlier criteria are about to be overturned. I have on my desk, as I write these words, an example of that. It's the Costin Ultimate HD 8-24x50 Zoom Binoculars. Yes, you read that right: they're an 8x50 pair of binoculars, *with a zoom feature* that lets you increase that magnificati... more »

IMAGINE WHO'D BE THE GOP GUESTS AT PRESIDENT HILLARY CLINTON'S STATE OF THE UNION ADDRESS
Fox's Todd Starnes is getting some attention for this thoughtful, closely reasoned opinion piece: *If Pelosi brings 'Dreamers' to the State of the Union, Trump should bring ICE agents* House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and a number of other Democrats plan to fill the House gallery with illegal aliens when President Trump delivers his first State of the Union address on Tuesday. ABC News reports at least 24 House Democrats plan to bring illegals -- the so-called "Dreamers" -- to watch the Tuesday night speech from the House gallery. ...
