RESISTANCE OR A PERMANENT STATE OF INSURRECTION:
I have long wanted to have this debate... so on my part, here is the opening salvo. Comments are welcome: In Chicano Manifesto (1971), Armando Rendon made the radical claim that the United States and Mexico were technically still in a state of war (1846-1848) because the 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo was violated prior to even its signing, and that therefore, a state of war continues to this day. Rendon’s claim was based on war having been waged against Mexico; half of its territories were illegally seized via war or threat of war during the 1830s through the 1850s; and sever... more »

Turkey Kisses Democracy Güle Güle
I've been to Turkey a dozen times; I love the country. On my first trip there I was just a kid in a VW camper van on the way to India. But I stayed for a month, visiting parts of the country few tourists ever see. And I've tried tried going back as frequently as possible, always to new parts of the country I hadn't been to-- as well as to Istanbul over and over. As with all places I like enough to go again and again, it's because of the people. In Turkey I first experienced the boundless generosity and hospitality of people towards a stranger. I was sad today to see the returns fr... more »

Everybody Sees Trump As A Conman Now, But Every Side Wants To Blame The Other Side
#NeverTrump conservatives feel vindicated... even vaguely brilliant and heroic. They said all along that Trump has always been a political opportunist who's never believed in anything but himself. Great... but I don't know anyone who *didn't* know that all along. Yes, Trump has always been a con man. Who could have missed that? John Ziegler began his Saturday column reminding us that almost exactly a year ago Señor Trumpanzee had said "I’m very capable of changing to anything I want to change to." That confirmed what he had long seen in Trump, namely that he was "a liberal conman... more »

If your forever was ending tomorrow, is this how you'd want to have spent it?" - Sarah Dessen

Even not so long ago, our road here in Ireland was called "the fairies' road." The world, we say, was enchanted- every stone and plant infused with an animate spirit. Science put paid to all that, chased the spirits from their woods and pools, drove the fairies from their hills. Disenchanted the landscape. Well, maybe not. It depends on how you define enchantment. Starbursts In Virgo
Starburst galaxies are where stars are forming at such a breakneck rate that the galaxy is eating up its gas supply faster than it can be replenished. There are several different factors that can lead to such an ideal environment in which stars can form at such a rapid rate. Crucially, there has to be a sufficiently massive supply of gas. This might be acquired in a number of ways -- for example by passing very close to another galaxy, in a full-blown galactic collision, or as a result of some event that forces lots of gas into a relatively small space. read more

"Suppose..."
"Suppose that we are wise enough to learn and know - and yet not wise enough to control our learning and knowledge, so that we use it to destroy ourselves? Even if that is so, knowledge remains better than ignorance. It is better to know—even if the knowledge endures only for the moment that comes before destruction - than to gain eternal life at the price of a dull and swinish lack of comprehension of a universe that swirls unseen before us in all its wonder. That was the choice of Achilles, and it is mine, too." - Isaac Asimov
REAL science must guide policy
As CFACT Senior Policy Advisor Paul Driessen points out, REAL science is easily distinguished by fake science. His latest evidence compares the testimonies of three real scientists (Dr, Roger Pielke, Jr., Dr. Judith Curry, and Dr. John Christie) versus heralded pseudo-scientist Michael Mann (who was caught cherry-picking data to "prove" his "hockey stick" thesis) at a recent House Science Committee hearing. Pielke, Curry, and Christie all described the science that lies behind their stances, while Mann resorted to an ad hominem attack on "climate deniers."

*(Click on Image to Enlarge)* *Reuters*: *Iraqi forces making new push toward Old City in Mosul* Iraqi forces launched a new attack on Islamic State in Mosul's Old City on Sunday, military officials said, trying to break the stalemate in attempts to seize the militants' last stronghold. Mosul, Iraq's second biggest city, was captured by the Sunni Muslim fighters in 2014, but government forces have retaken much of it during a six-month operation. The advance has hardly moved for more than a month, though, as the militants are holding out in the densely populated Old City in western... more »
USDA Stops Using Wildlife and Dog-Killing Cyanide Bombs in Idaho
About a month after an anti-predator device spit sodium cyanide in the face of an unsuspecting boy and killed his dog, the U.S. Department of Agriculture has announced it is ending its use of the M-44 mechanisms in Idaho indefinitely. "We take seriously the incident in Idaho," Jason Suckow, western regional director of the USDA's Wildlife Services agency, told conservation groups in a letter Monday. "We immediately responded by removing all M-44s from the area, initiating an inquiry into the incident, and launching a review of current [Wildlife Services] operating procedures." Suc... more »

The other half of *The World This Weekend *was spent on that study which found that most Anglicans voted to leave the European Union - in pointed contrast to the Church's strongly pro-Remain hierarchy. Mark Mardell duly went forth, like a Martian sending a postcard home, to talk unto the Anglicans. His particular focus was on their views of Englishness. He found that they are pro-English and profoundly patriotic. The Anglican leadership, in contrast, remains strong in believing that the Church needs to focus on being welcoming to the whole world. Mark then interviewed former Labo... more »
Happy Easter
I guess it's Easter today, which I would have known for sure if my parents were alive, but that was a while ago now. For those of you who do observe the occasion, I hope you have a joyful day celebrating with your loved ones. Of course, to a lot of people Easter means rebirth and renewed hope and all that sort of thing. So I'll leave you all with some photos from yesterday's Tax March in San Francisco. Which does make me a little hopeful--not because I think this will work and Trump and/or Congressional Republicans will have a massive change of heart, but because of the spirit and c... more »

(Putin Helped Give America) A Fringe White House
One of the guys I count on for Nunes inside scoops has been talking a lot about a fringe alt-right nut named Mike Cernovich lately. Other than him being the one who made up the bizarre fake news story of Hillary and Podesta running a child prostitution ring in a DC pizzeria, I hadn't followed Cernovich's illustrious career as one of the exemplar's of what the Republican Party has devolved into. A 39 year old woman-hating neo-Nazi, Cernovich was recently profiled in the *NY Times*: "a blogger, author of books, YouTube personality and filmmaker with a far-right social media followin... more »

C'mon, Frank, you're having a laugh, aren'tcha?"
Erdogan and the BBC
Listening to today's *The World This Weekend *was a little disconcerting. They began with Turkey and Recep Tayyip Erdogan's referendum on whether to make him, as Hugh Sykes put it, Turkey's 'Super-President' or not. As I've written before, it's struck me previously (whether rightly or wrongly) that the BBC used to give Erdogan a very good press, downplaying his early anti-democratic statements and previous Islamist declarations of intent, portraying him as an acceptable face of political Islamism, and, later, airing the case that Turkey's example might be a positive model for Ar... more »
