Russia Wants To Take Over The Arctic. Announces Arctic Military Modernization And Buildup

War News Updates Editor at War News Updates - 40 minutes ago
*(Click on Image to Enlarge)* *Business Insider:** This map shows Russia's game-changing militarization of the Arctic* As the Arctic warms, Russia is positioning itself to become the dominant player in a resource-rich and strategically positioned region. In order to capitalize on the oil and gas under the Arctic seabed and exploit new shipping routes as ice cover recedes, Moscow is undertaking a major military upgrade of its northern coast and outlying archipelagos. Its new bases — which include search-and-rescue stations, ports and airstrips, and military headquarters — are mean... more »

The Undeclared U.S. - Iran Alliance In Iraq Is Starting To Fray

Washington Post: *Expanding U.S. role in Iraq strains awkward alliance with Iran* The expanding U.S. military campaign against the Islamic State group in Iraq relies in part on an uneasy, arms-length partnership with Shiite militias backed by Iran — organizations that were once relentlessly effective killers of U.S. troops. Now, as the campaign enters its second year, there are signs that this awkward alliance may be fraying: militia threats of renewed attacks on U.S. personnel, a greater U.S. effort to bolster Sunni forces that are traditional adversaries of Iran and accusations... more »

After struggling through the last seasons of 30 Rock, I've rewarded myself by starting M*A*S*H from season 1, episode 1. (Thank you, Netflix!) It's no coincidence that M*A*S*H, one of the best and most daring sitcoms of all time, first aired in 1972. That risk-taking extended right down to network television, bringing realism and social commentary to a level previously unseen - and not... more »

A non-shabby 'Dateline'

Well, I must say that I enjoyed *Dateline London *today. It was one of those occasional editions where a wide range of different opinions was heard - and, even rarer, a genuine right-winger found a place on the panel. Especially enjoyable was the closing section on the man of the moment (no, not Alan Yentob): Jeremy Corbyn. *ConservativeHome*'s Alex Deane and the *New York Times*'s John Fisher Burns could scarcely believe their ears when the *Guardian*'s Rachel Shabi began arguing that Mr Corbyn occupies the centre ground of British politics.
