Loving Lizards

*By Nan Socolow* I have always loved frogs and lizards, reptiles and small amphibs. Living for decades in the tropics on a tiny island (pop. 1,400, the size of Manhattan) 90 miles south of Cuba, lizards lived inside and outside my house. On the island there were Lion Lizards and iguanas and geckos and"wood slaves" (tiny, almost transparent rubbery lizards that hung around wood and were ocher-colored as old Luden's cough drops). There was also the occasional scorpion in the house. And I shook out my sandals and shoes before putting them on. Wood Slave The lion lizards, grey... more »

BBC Watch has blogged ‘walls’. We blogged them the other day as well. The matter of fact way the BBC describes walls constructed by various countries to separate their citizens from undesirables or illegal migrants differs in tone from the suspicious manner they adopt when referring to the security barrier, often called the apartheid wall. They imply that Israel’s ‘excuse’ is disingenuous; not really for protecting Israelis from intruders with malicious intent, they imply, but for land-grabbing. I’m only mentioning this again because yesterday the rev. Lucy Winkett delivered a ‘fo... more »

*Battling the Educrats for History* The College Board owns and publishes both the “framework” for the nation’s Advanced Placement U.S. History course and its exam to receive college credit after mastery is demonstrated by high school students. If someone were to tell me I'd be writing a rant in the coming weeks, I would have put money on it having something to do with the upcoming federal election. Annihilation for the nation

The BBC is heading this morning’s news bulletins with Tony Blair’s somewhat alarmist comments about what will happen if Jeremy Corbyn wins the Labour Party’s leadership contest. “Over the cliff’s edge!” and I don’t think he was talking about Cliff Richard. “Please understand the danger we are in. The party is walking eyes shut arms outstretched over the cliff’s edge to the rocks below” However, as it has been stated on more than one occasion, anything that emanates from Tony “Bliar” has the opposite effect to that intended. Rules for how to behave in Court

James C Morton at Morton's Musings - 1 day ago
Whenever you are going to be in Court there are some basic rules you should follow. These rules apply in every Court regardless of whether you are going to be a witness or a party. The rules apply whether you are going to small claims court, traffic court, being a witness in divorce court or you are on trial for first degree murder. First, always tell the truth. This isn't just some goody-two shoes comment – it's very important to tell the truth. Lies will be caught out in a flash and once you are seen to have lied about something, even a small thing, nothing you say will have much ... more »

A Jewish Journalist’s Exclusive Look Inside Iran

Status Of Turbulent Times Show

Northerntruthseeker at Northerntruthseeker - 1 day ago
I have been asked by many commentators about the status of the Turbulent Times show, that Whitewraithe and I have had to put on hold due to several, and some unforeseen, circumstances.... We are glad to say that many of the issues that forced us to take Turbulent Times off air have been resolved, and we are going to have Turbulent Times back on air very soon...... I will alert everyone when we have a brand new Turbulent Times scheduled, and I do want to thank everyone for their patience.... And as usual... More to come NTS **One other note: I have reluctantly decided to add "Ads... more »

“To the eye, this cosmic composition nicely balances the Bubble Nebula at the lower right with open star cluster M52. The pair would be lopsided on other scales, though. Embedded in a complex of interstellar dust and gas and blown by the winds from a single, massive O-type star, the Bubble Nebula, also known as NGC 7635, is a mere 10 light-years wide. * Click image for larger size.* On the other hand, M52 is a rich open cluster of around a thousand stars. The cluster is about 25 light-years across. Seen toward the northern boundary of Cassiopeia, distance estimates for the Bubble Neb... more »

The Poet: Wendell Berry, "A Warning To My Readers"

*"A Warning To My Readers"* by Wendell Berry "Do not think me gentle because I speak in praise of gentleness, or elegant because I honor the grace that keeps this world. I am a man crude as any, gross of speech, intolerant, stubborn, angry, full of fits and furies. That I may have spoken well at times, is not natural. A wonder is what it is."

*“A Momentary Stay”* by Chet Raymo “This from a review of Paul Muldoon's new book of poetry, "Maggot", by Nick Laird, in the June 23, 2010 "New York Review of Books". It seems Muldoon was heckled by an audience member who claimed that what he was reading wasn't poetry. Muldoon replied: "It doesn't come naturally to me to defend these things as poems. As a concept, I see it like this: the word "poetry," as you know, means "making," so these are constructs in the world…One is trying to construct something that will help us to make sense of things, and a construct, or building even, l... more »

"We Are Free..."

noreply@blogger.com (CoyotePrime) at Running 'Cause I Can't Fly - 1 day ago
“The worst that could happen to us is that we have to die, and since that is already our unalterable fate, we are free; those who have lost everything no longer have anything to fear.” “Death is our eternal companion. It is always to our left, an arm’s length behind us. Death is the only wise adviser that a warrior has. Whenever he feels that everything is going wrong and he’s about to be annihilated, he can turn to his death and ask if that is so. His death will tell him that he is wrong, that nothing really matters outside its touch. His death will tell him, ‘I haven’t touched yo... more »

"Things We Don’t Want to Do: Outside the Comfort Zone"

*"Things We Don’t Want to Do: Outside the Comfort Zone"* by Madisyn Taylor, The DailyOM "Doing things we don't want to do, or that scare us, creates flow in our lives and allows us to grow. Most of us have had the experience of tackling some dreaded task only to come out the other side feeling invigorated, filled with a new sense of confidence and strength. The funny thing is, most of the time when we do them, we come out on the other side changed and often wondering what we were so worried about or why it took us so long. We may even begin to look for other tasks we’ve been avoidi... more »

“Ignorance Is Bliss”

noreply@blogger.com (CoyotePrime) at Running 'Cause I Can't Fly - 1 day ago
*“Ignorance Is Bliss”* by Michael Brenner “Factual information is out of fashion. American society now devalues it. Subjective attitude and opinion are considered to be as worthy as accurate renderings of reality. Many wear their ignorance as a badge of honor. The ultimate freedom for them is to avoid needless bother in knowing the truth and distinguishing it from falsity. Some of this behavior is calculated and intentional; much of it is blind indulgence of convenience and prejudice. These behaviors are commonplace among our officials, politicians, commentariat, and the citizenry... more »

The Economy: “Central Banks Are Beginning to Lose Control”

noreply@blogger.com (CoyotePrime) at Running 'Cause I Can't Fly - 1 day ago
*“Central Banks Are Beginning to Lose Control”* by Phoenix Capital Research “Since 2008, the Keynesians running global Central Banks had always suggested that there was no problem too great for them to handle. They’d promised to do “whatever it takes,” to maintain the financial system and print the world back to growth. Thus far, we’d seen some pretty aggressive moves. The most aggressive was committed by the Bank of Japan, which announced a single QE program equal to 24% of Japanese GDP in April 2013. However, the SNB was the first Central Bank to actually reach the point at which... more »

Landlord subsidies

Peter Cresswell at Not PC - 1 day ago
The welfare weenies are slowly realising that the rent subsidy they pay to beneficiaries does little more than, guess what, go to subsidise higher rents – leaving landlords better off and beneficiaries as far behind the 8 ball as before. The euphemistically titled Ministry for Social Development has just released *a report* about this little-studied area. Based on the limited evidence available however, it concludes (their words): - *The literature review found evidence to support the contention that a proportion of demand-side housing subsidies is capitalised [sic] into ... more »

BREAKING NEWS: Massive Explosion in China- Nuclear? ... smells a lot like Yemen.

BREAKING NEWS!! This could be some serious shit my friends. Massive explosion in China, just east of Beijing at the port city of Tianjin. TWO explosions, one after the other. The first was reported by the official Chinese news as being the equivalent of 3 tons of TNT, followed by a second explosion that was much bigger, the equivalent of 21 tons of TNT. Does this sound familiar? This is exactly what was seen TWICE in Yemen in May: first blast, smaller, followed by a huge blast approximately 20-30 seconds later. The Yemen bombs in May were pony nukes- I sent the videos to se... more »

Is Jeremy Corbyn The UK's Bernie Sanders?

DownWithTyranny at DownWithTyranny! - 1 day ago
As we mentioned yesterday, the right-of-center, Wall Street-owned New Dems are making a play to assert themselves within the Democratic congressional caucus. They are following in the footsteps of the Tony Blair New Labour wing of the UK's Labour Party, which took over the party but has more recently lost support by inching further and further right. The New Labour dominance may be ending, though. Labour Party leadership elections-- in the wake of the 2015 general election defeat and the subsequent resignation of Ed Miliband-- begin Friday (August 14) and close September 10. And th... more »

Q: Why the continuing controversy over the American Civil War?

Peter Cresswell at Not PC - 1 day ago
Q: Why the continuing controversy over the American Civil War? A: Because, says Colonel Ty Seidule, Professor of History at the United States Military Academy at West Point, “many people don’t want to believe that the citizens of the southern states were willing to fight and die to preserve a morally repugnant institution.” That’s it right there.
