Loving Lizards
*By Nan Socolow* I have always loved frogs and lizards, reptiles and small amphibs. Living for decades in the tropics on a tiny island (pop. 1,400, the size of Manhattan) 90 miles south of Cuba, lizards lived inside and outside my house. On the island there were Lion Lizards and iguanas and geckos and"wood slaves" (tiny, almost transparent rubbery lizards that hung around wood and were ocher-colored as old Luden's cough drops). There was also the occasional scorpion in the house. And I shook out my sandals and shoes before putting them on. Wood Slave The lion lizards, grey... more »

"Protein-packed breakfast prevents body fat gain in overweight teens"
This Science Daily story about the benefit of eating *a lot* of protein for breakfast caught my attention: University of Missouri researchers compared the benefits of consuming a normal-protein breakfast to a high-protein breakfast and found the high-protein breakfast -- which contained 35 grams of protein -- prevented gains of body fat, reduced daily food intake and feelings of hunger, and stabilized glucose levels among overweight teens who would normally skip breakfast. How Does The Islamic State Deliver Explosives Into Iraq’s Capital?
Bombs are the major cause of casualties in Baghdad. Car bombs may get all the headlines, but really it is the daily routine of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) and their sticky bomb brethren attached to vehicles that make up the vast majority of violence in the capital. In July 2015 for example there was 1 suicide car bomb, 4 suicide bombers, 18 car bombs, 25 sticky bombs, and 112 IEDs versus just 45 shootings in Baghdad. The sleek, white unmanned aircraft is designed for intelligence gathering and surveillance missions, according to the National Chung Shan Institute of Science and Technology (CSIST), an arm of the Ministry of National Defense that is developing the drone. It is more than twice the size of any of the existing fleet of 32 “Sharp Kite” drones used by Taiwanese forces. Read more
China on a quest to develop VTOL aircraft technology: Sina Military
[image: Yak-141 Freestyle]China is working hard to develop a vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft for strategic and economic purposes, reports the Beijing-based Sina Military Network. Citing the Kanwa Defense Review, a Canada-based Chinese-language military magazine, the report said China is believed to have been developing VTOL technology for more than a decade already but appears to be another 15-20 years away from a finished product. HMS Edinburgh sets sail for scrap in Turkey
A historic Navy destroyer yesterday left Britain for the last time to be sold for scrap in Turkey after a campaign to turn it into tourist attraction in Edinburgh ended in failure. It had been hoped that HMS Edinburgh, the last of the Royal Navy’s Type 42 destroyers, would find a new home in Leith. But after proposed costs for the venture were deemed too high, the ship – the largest in its class – was sold to a Turkish scrap merchant, a fate which befell her sister ships, HMS Manchester and HMS Liverpool. China Dreams of Blue-Water Navy in Recruitment Video
China’s navy sails the ocean blue, and its saucy ships are beauties. Their sailors are sober men and true, and attentive to their duty. That’s the steely image the Chinese navy is projecting in its latest clarion call for recruits—a slick video laying out Beijing’s ambitions of creating a powerful maritime force that can safeguard Chinese interests anywhere across the globe. The video, released late last week, comes as the People’s Liberation Army Navy gears up for a frontline role in President Xi Jinping’s increasingly assertive defense and foreign policy, marked by what antsy nei... more »

USS Alexandria departs after early completion of overhaul

What is Wrong with the EPA? A Rant
I wanted to title this post: "EPA: Environmental Terrorists" because of their LACK OF RESPONSE on the Colorado mine disaster that is POISONING the Animas River, which ends up in Lake Powell before emptying out into the COLORADO River.
