The World's 5 'Best' Defense Firms

War News Updates Editor at War News Updates - 43 minutes ago
*Robert Farley, National Interest: **The Real Top Guns: The World's 5 Best Defense Firms* After the end of the Cold War, the defense industry witnessed a wave of consolidations, sparked by a speech given by Deputy Secretary of Defense William Perry in 1993. In a talk later dubbed “The Last Supper,” Perry suggested to a group of defense industrialists that the number of major firms should shrink by about half, from fifteen to seven or eight. Paul Craig Roberts searches for the possible ways that the stock market might settle down again. On one hand, "The belief that a hike in interest rates is in the cards keeps the US dollar from losing exchange value in relation to other currencies, thus preventing a flight from the dollar that would reduce the Uni-power to Third World status." But "On the other hand, the stock market decline last Thursday and Friday could indicate that the players in the market have comprehended that the stock market is an artificially inflated bubble that has no real basis. Once the psychology is destroyed, flight sets in." And "If flight turns out to be the case, it will be interesting to see if central bank liquidity and purchases of stocks can stop the rout."

John Whittingdale advancing on Broadcasting House (as imagined by Roger Bolton of 'Feedback') The BBC's 'nemesis' John Whittingdale has been speaking at the Guardian Edinburgh International Television Festival. Here are some of the things he said, as quoted by the *Independent *and the Guardian: This idea that there is an ideological drive to destroy the BBC is just extraordinary, the people rushing to defend the BBC are tilting at windmills, they are trying to have an argument that has never been started, certainly not by me. Supplemental: Back inside the “I, Claudius” scam!

bob somerby at the daily howler - 8 hours ago
*WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 26, 2015While haplessly letting it happen:* By now, it’s fairly obvious. We’re back inside an “I Claudius” bubble. Here’s what we mean by that: In 1976, the Robert Graves novel became a massively popular PBS series. In each format, Graves’ entity created a fascinating picture of the way politics can work—more particularly, of the way the public can be deceived about the way their republic is functioning. On the PBS series and in the novel, we were taken behind the scenes of the Roman republic. We saw what was actually happening inside the halls of power—and we... more »

Thanks to Andrew Coyne

I've already said on this blog that I have little respect for the man's economic views. But when it comes to defending Parliament against the serial outrages of stephen harper, I give a tip of my hat to Andrew Coyne. Yesterday he wrote a valuable commentary about the Duffy scandal. Its main source of value is its serving as a counterweight to all the idiotic attempts by harpercon hacks to deny the scandal of the Duffy-Wright bribe. ("So Wright repaid the taxpayers instead of Duffy himself. What's the big deal?") Coyne summarizes what other clear-headed critics of harper have been ... more »

Conservatives love to embrace "choice" as long as they get to do the choosing for everyone else. This self-centering rule applies universally, whether we are talking about women's reproductive rights or educational rights for the poor. And that which conservatives cannot control, they would rather destroy. This is the essence of necrophilic personality that Erich Fromm described--one driven to embrace death, rather than to allow for any lack of control. India-Australia Drills Targeting Submarines Rattle China

Ko Savonije at Naval Open Source INTelligence - 21 hours ago
[image: P-3C Orion]India and Australia will focus on anti-submarine warfare in their first ever joint naval exercises, signaling a growing strategic relationship to counter China’s increased activity in the Indian Ocean. The war games next month off India’s Visakhapatnam port in the Bay of Bengal will include exercises to protect a tanker from a hostile attack submarine. The area is near waters where China deployed a nuclear-powered submarine for the first time last year, as well as the Sri Lankan port where another unit surfaced twice. That caused a diplomatic uproar. There’s the “... more »

U.S. says N. Korea taking steps to de-escalate tensions

Ko Savonije at Naval Open Source INTelligence - 21 hours ago
[image: Kim Jong Un]The United States has seen North Korea taking steps "both on land and at sea" to de-escalate heightened tensions after reaching a peace agreement with South Korea, the Pentagon press secretary said Tuesday. The agreement, reached early Tuesday, defused tensions that had spiked sharply following last week's exchange of artillery fire and sparked fears of a major clash as the North showed signs of provocative moves, such as special forces moving to front-line areas and submarines leaving their bases. "As this agreement moved forward, we have seen at least on the p... more »

Gaillard vs Ferrara 1981: are these discussions sane?

*A sickeningly direct perspective into the feminist manipulations within the Academia* A month ago, the achieved phenomenologist Mary Gaillard (Berkeley) released her book "A Singularly Unfeminine Profession: One Woman's Journey in Physics". As you can imagine, the title has a similar effect on me as a red towel has on a bull. I am even inclined to think that the title – and probably much of the content – is considered repulsive by most of the potential readers. Amazon.com only offers two short reviews – one five-star review (saying "great read" and "fantastic") and one one-star re... more »

Last Night in Gangjeong Village

We gathered last night at the peace center in Gangjeong village for my talk and then a party. It was a lovely night with some great songs by three different activists and then some good food. I reminded those assembled that the Global Network would remain active in our solidarity work opposing the Navy base in their village. I've just packed my bags and need to head to Jeju City for a radio interview on station there this afternoon. Also the largest online Jeju Island news outlet ran a story about my talk last night. I'll post the link once I get it. This morning I was in a m... more »

USA Today Shills For Anonymous Pentagon Officials on Fantasy Iran Attack

Nima Shirazi at Wide Asleep in America - 22 hours ago
Tom Vanden Brook (USA Today) USA Today's Pentagon correspondent Tom Vanden Brook reports today that an American attack on Iranian nuclear facilities would set the program back about two years, and would have to be carried out "with as many as 1,000 aircraft sorties over several days to a week" and employ the constantly-hyped Massive Ordnance Penetrator, a 30,000 pound bunker buster bomb

Customs Bureaucracy 3, Balikbayan box controversy

The balikbayan box controversy stirred by the Bureau of Customs (BOC) plan to conduct random physical inspection of the boxes seem to have tapered off. The President intervened and ordered the BOC to stop its plan. It is a bit condescending for BOC head Bert Lina to ask the OFWs to be honest when he knows that many BOC personnel are very dishonest and corrupt. See comments below. Demanding honesty from the public is understandable, but demanding honesty from the bureaucracy is even more important. I missed yesterday's blog because life became chaotic for the day. I didn't need the world's chaos to add to it. Luckily, I found only one column in the August 24 paper worth reading. It was Steve Malloy's column. At first, I thought it a waste of time; but that was the fault of a really bad headline by the editor, "NB should beware the danger of addictive drugs". I thought that sounded, at best, trite. However, Malloy's column is much, much better than that. I strongly advise reading it. The editorial, as usual, takes the gold medal for brainlessness.
