John McCain-- Always And Forever The Manchurian Candidate?
The CIA was trying-- and trying hard-- to further its own goals in the 2014 elections. Replacing Senate Intelligence Committee civil liberties hawk Mark Udall (D-CO) with a hapless national security state sieve may have been their top goal but electing freshmen members to climb into committee positions to control CIA over site was another goal. It met with mixed results. The DCCC failed to slip several CIA agent-House candidates into Congress-- at least Kevin Strouse (PA-08), Bobby McKenzie (MI-11) and Jerry Cannon (MI-01)-- but the Republicans were able to beat hapless Blue Dog ... more »

Why Does Diane Ravitch Continue to Support Charter Schools?
About 1 in 6 charter schools is the for-profit variety. By a wide margin, most of the damage, destruction, and abuse is being done by the 5,000 or so "non-profit" charter schools. The vast majority are more segregated even than the public schools they replace, and most of the punishing "no excuses" abuse is committed in these "non-profit" chain gangs. And most of the public money intended for public education is being sucked up by the corporate welfare artists and ideologues whose aim it is to dismember government and to devour each piece as they go. And so it is a puzzle to ... more »

Quotes of the day: On deflation
[image: image]Pictures of people not buying due to falling prices [image: image] “Economists have come up with the bizarre concept that falling, or even stable, prices squelch demand and deter consumption. The idea is that if consumers know that something will cost less in the future (even if it's just 2% less) they will defer their purchases indefinitely, perhaps waiting for the cost of their desired product or service to approach zero. They argue that this can push an economy into a deflationary spiral of falling prices and diminished demand which may be impossible to escape. ... more »

BRAVE NEW VOICES: They’re everywhere!
*THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 20, 2014Part 4—Rachel’s latest tale:* Brave new voices are everywhere in the rapidly changing media landscape. The world of American journalism is changing before our eyes. Consider the report in yesterday’s New York Times about the storied New Republic, whose owner says it’s no longer “liberal,” or even a “magazine.” The New Republic is now one hundred years old. Yesterday, Jennifer Scheussler reported some of the changes which have occurred under Chris Hughes, “the Facebook multimillionaire who bought the magazine in 2012.” The new owner is 30 years old. Fighting The Insurgency In Iraq 2004 vs 2014
Many of the current events in Iraq harken back to previous times. In 2004 the insurgency made a major progression from hit and run tactics and setting off roadside bombs to making a surge into some of the country’s urban areas. The American and Iraqi forces responded with the two battles of Fallujah and other smaller clearing operations. By the end of the year, American commanders were claiming that they had broken the back of the insurgency. A series of intelligence reports were saying the opposite. They warned that the militants were actually getting stronger. The parallels with... more »

The criticism of J-31, China's second fifth-generation fighter jet, mainly stems from the dark exhaust emitting from the jet's engine, which indicates the engine's poor efficiency in burning fuel. Significant Carbon confirmed on Comet
We are about half way there. A comet turns out to be a mass of frozen methane, water, and carbon dioxide and related molecules. This clearly will lack internal strength and easily break up as we well know from observed comets tightly orbiting the sun at perihelion. What this does explin is the genesis of comet dust. As the comet passes close the the Sun, its temperature rises sharply, and all the surface will experience temperatures well over the heat of molecular disassociation. All this will free an enormous amount of elemental carbon which will pick up static charge... more »

"The Question of Worthiness: Shifting into Gratitude"
*"The Question of Worthiness: Shifting into Gratitude"* by Madisyn Taylor, The DailyOM "When we question whether or not we are worthy of something it is important at that time to shift into gratitude. We all know what it’s like to finally get something we want, only to find ourselves feeling as if we don’t deserve it. Whether it’s a car, a new job, or a date with someone wonderful, we suddenly feel as if we are not up to it. Something in us wants to reject this gift from the universe, perhaps because it requires that we think of ourselves in a new way or makes us question why we sho... more »

Have You Ever Done Anything To Stop Our Government From Torturing People? You Can
You may have noticed that we're not big on asking *DWT* readers to sign petitions. Groups like the DCCC ruined them just the way they ruined crowd-sourcing e-mails. They always use they as a means to get people to give over their contact information so that they can be preyed upon by people looking for contributions. Recently, though, we did urge people to sign a petition to keep Nancy Pelosi from appointing Wall Street's Jim Himes chairman of the DCCC. It appears to have worked. So let's try another! This one is a wide coalition effort that was organized by our friends at Daily K... more »

The mild PHEV: the next little thing?
Leveraging existing assets is one of our best prospects for cleaning up the air and cutting petroleum consumption. An under-appreciated possibility is using conventional hybrids, even retrofitting existing ones, to substitute a bit of grid power for petroleum fuel. In an article on advanced lead-carbon batteries for mild hybrids at GCC, there are these notable phrases: The state-of-charge (SoC

U.S. President Barack Obama. (Ian Waldie/Bloomberg) *President Obama Needs To Fix His Flawed Islamic State Strategy -- Washington Post editorial* THE BEHEADING of another American by the Islamic State brought an appropriately harsh condemnation from President Obama, who called it “an act of pure evil.” Such words about the murder of Abdul-Rahman Kassig, also known as Peter Kassig, ought to reinforce the urgency of destroying the terrorist entity before it can further embed itself in Syria and Iraq and commit other atrocities — such as genocide against non-Muslim communities or a d... more »

CETA AND TTIP: Don't Let Them Get Away With It
