Both classes elected their respective class presidents this week (Freshman Orientation Week), after the new members had a chance to meet and feel each other out. The Republicans picked extremist Colorado crackpot Ken Buck. The Democrats were more discerning and strategic, electing one of California's most accomplished and up-and-coming political stars, Ted Lieu. Pacific Ocean Tipping Points

Majia's Blog at Majia's Blog - 11 hours ago
Life is resilient but abrupt changes in ecosystems typically produce escalating species extinctions. Abrupt changes in ecosystems are described as tipping points. The idea of a tipping point has been studied quite extensively by environmental scientists, among others. For example, this study on "tipping elements" explores factors whose impact is sufficient (especially in combination) to cause tipping points. The study focuses on rapid climate change as a critical tipping point: Duarte, C. (2012) Tipping Elements in the Arctic Marine Ecosystem. AMBIO, 41, 44-55. The existence of e... more »

The BBC’s conduct over the recent outbreak of violence in Israel has been worse than ever. Today a parade of commentators, one after another, have reacted to the synagogue murders with a begrudging half-hearted condemnation swiftly followed by the kind of justification that they know the public will swallow, namely that violence is understandable because of Netanyahu, ‘the occupation’ and the settlements. We even had to watch Ben Brown interviewing an individual named Ismail Patel from Leeds ‘Friends of Al Aqsa’ who couldn’t even bring himself to condemn the murders, and Rachel S... more »

Chasing Footnotes and the Fort Monmouth Radar/Visual Sightings

I have been chasing footnotes again as I work on my new book. This time the trouble wasn’t as outrageous as it has been in the past. I was researching the series of sightings at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey. These were radar and visual sightings that took place on September 10 and 11, 1951. It all began when a student radar operator tracked an object at a speed faster than fighters at the time. Not much later, the pilot of a jet trainer saw an object that he believed to be a flying saucer. Other radars were involved, though one of those sightings on the tenth was clearly a balloon. Israel may halve second order of F-35 fighters -minister

Ko Savonije at Naval Open Source INTelligence - 20 hours ago
[image: F-35A Lightning II]Israel may soon order 10 to 15 US-made F-35 fighter jets, around half the number previously mentioned by defence sources in both countries, an Israeli cabinet minister said on Monday. A reduced Israeli purchase could dent international confidence in the plane, which is being developed and built by Lockheed Martin Corp for the US military and allies - a US$399 billion (S$498.9 billion) endeavour that is the world's most expensive weapons programme. Israel bought 19 F-35s for US$2.75 billion in 2010, with delivery scheduled between 2016 and 2018. Defence Min... more »

Ko Savonije at Naval Open Source INTelligence - 20 hours ago
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association and the Coast Guard are teaming up in the Arctic to test new unmanned aerial system applications. This summer, the Healy, the Coast Guard’s research icebreaker, conducted unmanned aerial vehicle tests in the Arctic alongside NOAA, said Robbie Hood, UAS program director at the scientific agency. The Coast Guard is “letting this ship be a testing ground for unmanned technologies, both water vehicles and air vehicles,” she said during the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International’s annual program review. Ignorance is bliss?

John Friend at The Realist Report - 20 hours ago
The following video demonstrates exactly what is wrong with America. Namely, the fact that we have a country filled with abysmally ignorant, moronic individuals who do not know how to properly use their brains. Most people, especially the younger generations of Americans, strictly concern themselves with watching television, cheering for their favorite sports team, and following the lives of degenerate Hollywood celebrities. Aldous Huxley, the brilliant English writer and philosopher who authored *Brave New World*, described a future world in which an oligarchical elite would prod... more »

F-35 jump jets for navy landing ships not worth the cost, study finds

Ko Savonije at Naval Open Source INTelligence - 20 hours ago
[image: NUSHIP Canberra]With its ski-jump prow, the navy's newest vessel looks just like an aircraft and at 27,000 tonnes is bigger than the navy's last carrier HMAS Melbourne. So why not go the full distance and turn landing helicopter dock (LHD) vessel HMAS Canberra into a true aircraft carrier, equipped with fast jets rather than just helicopters. The defence team preparing the new Defence White Paper is considering this question. Read more

*U.S. Intelligence Chief Describes Mission to Free Detainees in North Korea -- New York Times* WASHINGTON — The director of national intelligence, James R. Clapper Jr., described on Sunday his secret mission to seek the release of two Americans held in North Korea as a series of grim encounters with officials who expressed disappointment that he had not come bearing a “breakthrough” in relations. “I was quite apprehensive because we weren’t sure how this was going to play out,” Mr. Clapper said on the CBS News program “Face the Nation,” offering a detailed description of the visi... more »

The Big Chill: Tensions In The Arctic - Analysis

Ko Savonije at Naval Open Source INTelligence - 21 hours ago
[image: Arctic submarine]One hundred and sixty-eight years ago this past July, two British warships—HMS Erebus and HMS Terror—sailed north into Baffin Bay, bound on a mission to navigate the fabled Northwest Passage between the Atlantic and the Pacific oceans. It would be the last that the 19th-century world would see of Sir John Franklin and his 128 crew members. But the Arctic that swallowed the 1845 Franklin expedition is disappearing, its vast ice sheets thinning, its frozen straits thawing. And once again, ships are headed north, not on voyages of discovery—the northern passages... more »

US-Armed Syrian Opposition "Surrenders" to Al Qaeda?

Land Destroyer at Land Destroyer - 21 hours ago
*November 18, 2014 *(Ulson Gunnar - NEO) - Al Qaeda affiliates are suddenly now Islamic State (ISIS) affiliates, and entire groups of militants the US has been arming, funding, and training are "surrendering" to Al Qaeda, bringing along with them a large number of US weapons. Is this a failure of US foreign policy? Or is this simply a rhetorical means to explain away what appears to be an immense army of extremists the US is once again building up to direct at one of its enemies, just as it did in Afghanistan in the 1980's? *Al Qaeda Morphs into ISIS* In late September, just in ... more »

Andrew Coyne: Canada’s glorious bipartisan tradition of messing up military procurement

Ko Savonije at Naval Open Source INTelligence - 21 hours ago
[image: Sea King helicopter]That was a cracker of a column my Postmedia colleague, Michael Den Tandt, unloaded the other day, taking the Harper government to task for its “disjointed, underfunded, poorly understood [and] chronically secretive” defence policy. For all the prime minister’s tough talk about the growing list of strategic and security threats to the democracies — Russia, Iran, ISIS and beyond — there is, he noted, a widening gap between Canada’s professed readiness to “do its part” and our actual ability to do so. Indeed, so bad is the “rust-out” that “unless there are ... more »

Scottish Labour goes to war over Trident

Ko Savonije at Naval Open Source INTelligence - 21 hours ago
[image: Vanguard class SSBN]A senior Scottish Labour figure has warned that scrapping Trident would be a “massive blow” for jobs after candidates in the party’s leadership election backed the removal of nuclear submarines from the Clyde. Former Labour frontbencher John Park, who worked in the Faslane dockyards where Trident is based, attacked what he said was the “rhetoric” of politicians in the leadership contest. Mr Park – a former MSP who is now a senior figure in the UK trade union movement – issued the warning after Labour leadership contender Neil Findlay said he agreed with ... more »

Expert: Surface fleet needs to go on offense

Ko Savonije at Naval Open Source INTelligence - 21 hours ago
[image: RIM-162 Evolved SeaSparrow Missile]Why send an SM-6 missile to do a RIM-162 Sea Sparrow's job? That's the principle behind a radical new strategy proposed by an influential D.C. think tank. If implemented, it would change the way the surface fleet fights by extending the ships' kill zone with longer-range missiles and new technologies.. The Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments report calls for surface combatants to use long-range missiles to shoot down aircraft and bombers before they are close enough to fire at the surface group, while concentrating air defenses ... more »

In recent months, India has reversed two more proposals for buying transport aircraft and submarines and decided to make them at home. Nanotech process a breath of fresh air for submarines

Ko Savonije at Naval Open Source INTelligence - 21 hours ago
[image: PNNL-Technology]Sailors aboard the Navy’s submarines could soon breathe a little easier—and smell a little better—thanks to a nanotechnology system developed at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. The technology, called SAMMS, for Self Assembled Monolayers on Mesoporous Supports, is a dry system using hybrid nanoporous materials that can capture carbon dioxide from the air during shipboard purification. And it can replace the current liquid process that is corrosive, creates hazardous waste and smells bad. Read more

CMS sees excess of same-sign dimuons "too"

Those readers who remember all 6,000+ blog posts on this blog know very well that back in December 2012, there was a "Christmas rumor" about an excess seen by the other major LHC collaboration, ATLAS. ATLAS was claimed to have observed 14 events – which would mean a 5-sigma excess – of same... more »

The Human Spirit with Raphael

It is never a good start when i disagree entirely with his first paragraph. Be that as it may, this is an attempt to tackle the problem of the physical as we understand it, the problem of the spirit and the problem of the soul. This surely happens to be the real trinity of esoteric teaching that pervades all such teachings. .Creation is the process of been. It is the declaration 'I am'. Everything else follows with mathematical precission without any further actions. This is otherwise a helpful discussion of the spirit and a call to all to experience life consciously t... more »

[image: 800px-Meissner_effect_p1390048_web] This is surprisingly useful to me. I had already postulated the existence of the Cooper pair mentioned here and will go on to note that it is vastly more important than this work suggests. It is actually the central medium in which the physical world operates but not directly actively interacting with it. Imagine a channel made up of these Cooper pairs. Electrons will pass through without reacting at all while been shielded as well. This is super conductance. I think right now that we may have powered up a tube of this stuff and wat... more »

[image: Flickr-Bosnian Pyramids-Cabiria8] This works out quite well actually. I had established that the end of Eden took place around 45,000 years ago and that it entailed the end of mind to mind communication which put us in conflict with nature and forced us to learn to defend ourselves. It then took 15,000 years for modernism to emerge for the first time and that brought about the establishment of an energy grid with the pyramids. That gets us to 30,000 BP. The next big date is 12900 BP when humanity evacuated the Earth and impacted a comet into the northern Ice cap indu... more »
