NETANYAHU: THE BETTER OF THREE EVILS?

If either of Netanyahu’s right-wing political rivals for the Prime Minister’s job had been leading Israel over this last year or so, what would be the situation in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank today? A future potential Israeli leader is the extreme right-wing Naftali Bennett, leader of the Jewish Home party which is devoted to creating a Greater Israel that includes all of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip and excludes any possibility of there ever being a Palestinian state. Bennett is currently Minister of the Economy in Netanyahu’s cabinet. Another contender is the even more ex... more »

Here’s their update: One of the great economic controversies of the twentieth century was known as the Socialist Calculation Debate-drawing in thinkers and economists from Vienna to Moscow, and from Warsaw to Chicago—and included at its climax a joke whose punchline was new New Zealand. Soviet leader Nikita Kruschev entered the debate in 1956 by banging his shoe on the podium at the U.N., telling the west: "History is on our side. We will bury you in fine [goods]. You... more »

One of the things I love about classical music is discovering a new work or a piece by a composer you may not be all too familiar with. Such was the case this afternoon when I decided to escape our mini heatwave here and indulge in a few tunes. While Mozart is of course familiar to most, oft listened to and performed one of the unfortunate side effects with music of the Classical era is that there is a great deal of other great music out there that deserves to be better known but often isn't simply because....well, it's not Mozart. Origins Of Iraq’s Ethnosectarian Quota System

Many are wondering what a post-Nouri al-Maliki government will be like, but one thing that will stay the same are the ethnosectarian quotas. Many believe that the Americans created this system during the Coalition Provisional Authority (CPA). While the U.S. did institutionalize the concept, it actually came from the Iraqi opposition groups that were formed during the reign of Saddam Hussein. Starting in the 1990s a series of meetings were held in an attempt to unify the multiplicity of anti-Saddam organizations. Ferguson Riots Move the US One Step Closer to Insurrection

*Justin King | The Anti-Media* Many question the moral authority of the rioting in Ferguson that was triggered by yet another killing of an unarmed teen. The rioting is a symptom of a larger nationwide trend of resistance to the encroaching police state, and specifically the ability of law enforcement officials to kill, maim, and harass without consequence. The riots began before all of the facts were gathered about the shooting. The timing of the riot is important. "If you don't know the facts, stay quiet"

Not a sheep at Not a sheep - 19 hours ago
"If you don't know the facts, stay quiet" Good advice for the many idiots on social media who opine about Israel and the Palestinians without knowing anything other than the crap spouted by Hamas and their mouthpieces in the West. Also the BBC's Middle East 'journalists' and those back in London would do well to listen and think, but they won't as they prefer to vilify Israel.

Images from Ancient Morocco

By American Kabuki August 13, 2013 Here's a number of images I found in the Medina of Tetouan. There were created as photos for postcards, I don't know the names of these paintings but they show an ancient Morocco that is both familiar to the modern one (particularly in design motifs) and quite different at the same time. It appears to me that intermarriage with Europeans and Arabs has been very common as Moroccans today are far lighter in skin than in these images which are more African. Genetic diversity is always genetic vitality. Morocco is a melange of cultures that has ... more »

The summer has been a crowded one, not so much in terms of projects as lots of good company. We're equipped to handle the traffic nowadays, and we enjoy seeing the people we love, from near and far. Yet Beloved and I are essentially loners, and so we have to recharge a lot when we've been visiting for hours or days on end. She recharges by working on correspondence in her office, changing out the duck ponds' water, or walking in a nearby park. I putz around in the potting shed, or lie down with the laptop and post evidence of doom to fb and Twitter, or head out to the zendo. The "z... more »

Japan's defense plans raise hackles in China

[image: J-20 Powerful Dragon]Japan's new defense white paper has done little to mend fences with Beijing, with the Chinese government complaining that its Asian neighbor is using the "China threat" to justify a bigger defense budget. Japan will spend about $49 billion on defense in the fiscal year to March 2015 -- up about 3 percent from the previous year -- in the face of what it says is a worsening security environment in the region. It cites tensions on the Korean peninsula and territorial disputes in the sea lanes running south from northern Asia as its key concerns. Under Prim... more »

And I saw that the sacred hoop of my people was one of many hoops that made one circle, wide as daylight and as starlight, and in the center grew one mighty flowering tree to shelter all children of one mother and one father. In a series of conversations, Tiresias retells the story of Oedipus- he who was fated to kill his father and sleep with his mother- a story at the heart of Freud's own theory of the human psyche. At one point in the conversations, as Tiresias and Freud discuss the extent to which our lives are fated, the question of immortality arises. Freud says of Oedipu... more »
