UK: New Bill Threatens Future of Free Expression and Civil Liberty
barovsky, The New Dark Age - 17 hours ago
Big Brother Watch has warned that the recently proposed Online Harms Bill is yet another piece of legislation designed to deceive us into thinking the government is protecting us all when something more sinister is likely. Free expression and civil liberty are at stake. The result is a piece of proposed legislation which is as BBW says is “blunt in its force and will have severe unintended consequences”. Think back to the Regulatory Investigations Powers Act 2000, designed to catch terrorists and high level wanted criminals – eventually used by the BBC to catch licence fee dodgers a...

Invented in Civil War America, Battle Trains Fought Around the World
Alex Hollings, The National Interest - 16 hours ago
*Alex Hollings* *, * Railways, which served as the economic life blood of many developing cities, were crucial for defensive forces. Armored trains, equipped with heavy weaponry and enough protection to withstand a brutal fight, may not be commonplace today, but for more than a century, these track-eating juggernauts saw action in conflicts ranging from the Civil War to the Cold War and beyond. Long before tanks would revolutionize mechanized warfare, the concept of a heavily armored, heavily armed, mobile war machine had already captured the imaginations of war fighters keen to...

It has been a long and tiring day, with the startlingly unexpected decision to block Julian’s extradition. The judgement is in fact very concerning, in that it accepted all of the prosecution’s case on the right of the US Government to prosecute publishers worldwide of US official secrets under the Espionage Act. The judge also stated specifically that the UK Extradition Act of 2003 deliberately permits extradition for political offences. These points need to be addressed. But for now we are all delighted at the ultimate decision that extradition should be blocked.

Qi Chen, The National Interest - 19 hours ago
*Qi Chen* *Politics, Asia Pacific* A unified civil code has been on the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) political agenda since 2014. It's finally arrived, but it's taking a beating on social media. China’s first ever civil code came into effect on January 1 2021. Replacing a raft of other laws covering issues from marriage, to inheritance, adoption and property, it has binding authority over all civil disputes. A unified civil code has been on the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) political agenda since 2014. After ten rounds of open consultation, the National People’s Congress pa...
Left to Ruin: Why Australia Must Preserve its WWII History
Alexander Mitchell Lee, The National Interest - 19 hours ago
*Alexander Mitchell Lee* *History, Oceania* The educational and touristic values of Australia’s second world war defences are readily apparent. All they require is a little bit of attention after so many decades of neglect. Australia built a number of coastal defences to help protect the country from any enemy attack during the second world war. Now, almost 80 years later, some of the physical remnants of those historic facilities lie forgotten and decaying. These monuments to the nation’s home defence are in desperate need of preservation. While their condition varies greatly, ...
A 2021 Scotland Succession Could Spell Trouble for Canada
Catherine Frost, The National Interest - 19 hours ago
*Catherine Frost* *Politics, Atlantic* If Scotland does vote to secede from the UK, it could revive a Canadian constitutional debate about Quebec independence, tenuously settled in the 1990s. If the Scottish National Party wins Scotland’s parliamentary election in five months, it will be with a mandate to hold a second independence referendum. Scotland took the idea that a lawful path to independence exists from the Québec experience, more specifically from a Canadian ruling on Québec secession. If it comes to a constitutional crisis in the United Kingdom, however, the British ...
Naval Mines Could Do Massive Damage to China’s Military Plans
Lyle J. Goldstein, The National Interest - 19 hours ago
*Lyle J. Goldstein* *Security, Asia* Trade is China’s Achilles’ Heel. *Here's What You Need To Remember: *It is quite true that China’s navy and indeed its whole enormous maritime trade is vulnerable to mine warfare. Of course, it will be necessary to maintain a “big stick” to keep the peace in the volatile Asia-Pacific region, but it might be even more important to “speak softly”–an approach that has not been adequately attempted by either the current administration or its predecessors. In the closing phases of the Pacific War, American military strategists ingeniously combined...
America's Special Forces: The Key to Victory?
Kyle Mizokami, The National Interest - 19 hours ago
*Kyle Mizokami* *Security, * Despite the axiom that one “cannot mass produce special forces,” the ranks of U.S. operatives have more than doubled in size since 2001 in an effort to keep pace with demand. These stresses may be contributing to an institutional crisis. Special operations forces have been at the forefront of U.S. combat operations in the last two decades. They are nearly at the forefront of risky combat missions—and suffer higher casualties as they are often deployed to remote locations and exposed to greater risks. A companion article details the special operation...

*"The U.S. Has Lost More Than 110,000 Restaurants, **Setting The* * Stage For A Commercial Real Estate Collapse Of Epic Proportions"* by Michael Snyder "The restaurant industry is in the midst of a complete and total meltdown that is unlike anything that we have ever seen before. If you ask Google how many restaurants there are in the United States, it will tell you that there are 660,755, although that number is a few years old. But for the purposes of this article, that is a good enough estimate. Americans love to eat out, and restaurant workers are some of the hardest working peop...
