Advocates for American “restraint” and withdrawal often attribute international tension to the policies and actions of the United States, while ignoring the ideological predispositions, motivations, and actions of others. America's Transitional Justice Moment
Jonathan Hafetz, Balkinization - 8 hours ago
The United States has long witnessed other nations struggle with the dilemmas of transitional justice. In the aftermath of last week’s armed insurrection on the Capitol, and continued threat of political violence by anti-democratic forces, it is now confronting similar dilemmas itself. Transitional justice captures an array judicial and non-judicial responses to systematic past abuses, often committed during armed conflict or widespread social unrest. States trying to establish or restore a functioning democratic order must decide how to treat grave rights violations. Should thos...

Curiously, BBC One viewers in Scotland are still being treated to the Scottish government's daily coronavirus updates, without fail. Nicola Sturgeon's political opponents remain aghast at that. There was another one today of course, broadcast live in yet another *BBC Scotland News Special. * (They're hardly special, as they happen nearly every day, except weekends). In contrast, today's UK government coronavirus update from Downing Street was dropped from BBC One and relegated to the BBC News Channel. What's the BBC's thinking here?

Transit workers have been hit hard by the pandemic. Last year at least 100 from the Amalgamated Transit Union and 131 from the Transport Workers lost their lives to Covid-19. Before Covid, transit unions in the Bay Area—six ATU locals, and one local each of TWU and the Teamsters—often faced their individual struggles in isolation. But during the pandemic, these locals united across the region and came together with riders to demand protections for all. That unity forced reluctant politicians to make Covid safety a priority. It also set the stage for the unions and riders to team u...

Even F-35 Pilots Still Have To Fly 'by the Seat of Their Pants'
Justin Lee, The National Interest - 10 hours ago
*Justin Lee* *Security, * Knowing when to trust your seat of the pants feeling versus when to focus on your instruments is one of the most important skills for a fighter pilot to master. Being able to fly by the seat of your pants is still an important skill for a fighter pilot. Although modern fighters have an incredible array of sensors that feed them real-time information out to the horizon, a good pilot still listens to how the aircraft is talking to them. When aircraft were introduced in the early 20th century, most of them had limited–if any–instruments. Pilots flew them ...

Another scene seems to show Maverick flying a next-generation fighter dubbed “Darkstar,” according to the movie’s Matchbox toy line. The Darkstar aircraft shown only briefly at the end of t...

If you need a gun, time may be running out to buy one without problems

I've posted many times in these pages about firearms, security and self-defense. Fortunately, many of my readers already understand these issues, and others have come to do so through the discussions we've had here. Over the past year alone, I've helped more than 20 people upgrade existing firearms or buy them - sometimes multiple firearms. Over the more than two decades since I came to this country, I daresay I've helped over 500 people in that way, plus taught at least as many disabled and/or handicapped people to shoot defensively. I'm quietly pleased about that. However...
