Crisis In Portland Did Not Start With Trump’s Shock Troops
Terrace, PopularResistance.Org - 11 hours ago
By now, you’ve very likely seen startling footage of armed federal officers storming through the streets of downtown Portland and abducting protesters with unmarked vehicles. Maybe you’ve watched the live streams of them indiscriminately lobbing tear gas into crowds of people calmly standing on the sidewalk. Perhaps you saw a gruesome photo of critically injured young man, struck in the face by a munition while holding a speaker over his head. Since then, several others have been hit in the face by impact munitions and flash bangs, and there exists extensive footage, photos, and fi...
Hold The Halos
Terrace, PopularResistance.Org - 11 hours ago
Last week I received an invitation to attend the annual whistleblowers luncheon hosted by the National Whistleblower Center (NWC). The luncheon is always a big deal. It’s held in Washington, D.C., in the Russell Senate Office Building’s Kennedy Caucus Room, the same room that hosted the Watergate hearings, the Army-McCarthy hearings, the Iran-Contra hearings and other momentous events in American political history. It’s attended by hundreds of whistleblowers from all over government and the private sector, as well as more than a few politicians. The post Hold The Halos appeared...
No To The New Cold War With China
Terrace, PopularResistance.Org - 11 hours ago
China’s Ambassador to the United States posed a very simple question: "Is the United States ready or willing to live with another country with a very different culture, a very different political and economic system ... in peace?” The answer to this question must be that despite the intentions of the U.S. rulers, the people must opt for peace. For the Black liberation and anti-imperialist movement in the U.S., we are clear: War is a class issue and we say not one drop of blood from the Black working class and poor to defend the capitalist oligarchy. The post No To The New C...
Yemen: A Torrent Of Suffering In A Time of Siege
Terrace, PopularResistance.Org - 11 hours ago
In war-torn Yemen, the crimes pile up. Children who bear no responsibility for governance or warfare endure the punishment. In 2018, UNICEF said the war made Yemen a living hell for children. By the year’s end, Save the Children reported 85,000 children under age five had already died from starvation since the war escalated in 2015. By the end of 2020, it is expected that 23,500 children with severe acute malnutrition will be at immediate risk of death. Cataclysmic conditions afflict Yemen as people try to cope with rampant diseases, the spread of COVID-19, flooding, literal swarm...
Child Care Workers Now Have A Huge New Union
Terrace, PopularResistance.Org - 12 hours ago
A 17-year organizing campaign in California culminated this week in the successful unionization of 45,000 child care providers—the largest single union election America has seen in years. The campaign is a tangible achievement that brings together union power, political might, and social justice battles for racial and gender equality. Now, the hard part begins. Child Care Providers United (CCPU), the umbrella group now representing workers across the state, is a joint project of several powerful SEIU and AFSCME locals in California. Trump’s Golden Era Of Energy Is Turning To Lead
Terrace, PopularResistance.Org - 12 hours ago
It was just over a year ago that President Trump announced, “The golden era of American energy is now underway,” saying that his policies focused on exploiting oil, gas, and coal were “unleashing energy dominance.” What a difference a year makes. On July 10, the Financial Times ran an article with a headline that asked, “Is the party finally over for U.S. oil and gas?” And there is no doubt that it has been quite a party for the last decade. At least, for the fracking executives who have enriched themselves while losing hundreds of billions of dollars investors gave them to produc...

CoyotePrime, Running 'Cause I Can't Fly - 10 hours ago
"The life of Man is a long march through the night, surrounded by invisible foes, tortured by weariness and pain, towards a goal that few can hope to reach, and where none may tarry long. One by one, as they march, our comrades vanish from our sight, seized by the silent orders of omnipotent Death. Very brief is the time in which we can help them, in which their happiness or misery is decided. Be it ours to shed sunshine on their path, to lighten their sorrows by the balm of sympathy, to give them the pure joy of a never-tiring affection, to strengthen failing courage, to instill f...
Lockdown Lunacy: Your Government Ordered Depression Has Arrived
David Stockman, null - 10 hours ago
[image: undefined] Well, the Virus Patrol sure has done it. In a fit of reckless overkill they have managed to vaporize six years of economic growth during the last 90 days. And that’s just by the mechanical reckoning of the GDP accounts, where total output in Q2 weighed in at essentially the same level as Q4 2014. The real damage is far deeper, however, and is reflected in millions of small businesses permanently destroyed, tens of millions of households wiped-out financially and the vicious daisy chain of delinquencies, deferrals and defaults just beginning to rip through the $78...
US Takes Unprecedented Step Of Imposing Sanctions On Assad's Teenage Son
Tyler Durden, null - 10 hours ago
[image: undefined] This week the US imposed a new round of sanctions against the Syrian government, and while this is nothing new, what is gaining attention is the unprecedented step Washington has taken against Bashar al-Assad's teenage son. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo cited that the continued sanctions under the 'Caesar Act' were geared toward ending Assad's "brutal war against the Syrian people." U.S. Blacklists Hafez Al-Assad, Bashar’s 18 year old son. The eldest of the Assads' 3 children, has made headlines mostly for his interest in mathematics. Joel Rayburn said it was...

To date, most of the response to Scott Moe's multi-billion-dollar irrigation scheme has focused on the immense cost for uncertain return, as well as the lack of consultation with people who stand to be severely affected. But there's another major problem worth noting with the Sask Party's plans to dust off a plan developed before the development of the science we now understand around climate change. It's generally well recognized that the effects of the present course of climate change include hotter temperatures and a drier climate for Saskatchewan. Which leads to these warnings f...

James Purnell and the BBC plans to take over children's education
Craig, Is the BBC biased? - 11 hours ago
James Purnell (he/him?) I've never bought Peter Hitchens's counter-intuitive contention that the Blairites were the true Marxists in the Labour Party, but the behaviour of former Blairite minister James Purnell in his role as the BBC's head of radio and education occasionally gives me pause for thought. I think he's the main BBC figure behind all the pandering to the 'woke' brigade. Therefore, I felt a certain degree of disquiet on reading Anita Singh's piece in today's *Telegraph, *which reports James Purnell expressing his wish for the BBC to increase its "reach" by taking "a...

These days party discipline is something talked about in the breach rather than the observance, but hats off to the SNP. BWorld 445, Virtue signaling in energy
Bienvenido Oplas Jr, Government and Taxes - 12 hours ago
* My column in BusinessWorld, July 23, 2020. Virtue signaling is the process and habit of taking a conspicuous but generally unproductive action supposedly to advance a good cause but actually to show off the “moral supremacy” of the person or group compared to the rest of the population. In the energy sector, it is the habit of some people and groups to tell others that they are anti-environment and anti-planet if they do not demonize fossil fuels, especially oil and coal, and embrace variable renewables like wind and solar. When Will People Start Calling It What It Is-- Trump Genocide?

*Poof! into thin air- by Nancy Ohanian* There are a lot of ways to interpret the data Worldometers puts out on the pandemic. One that I find useful is to look at daily new cases, which generally track future mortality. Cases per million residents is also important since it's otherwise pointless to compare a state with very few people to a state with many millions of people. But however you look at it, when it comes to U.S. states, the ones that have followed Trump's denialism are generally the ones in the worst shape. Yesterday, for example, 16 states had more than a thousand new ca...

That led to the development of Nazi Germany's Me-163 Komet and Great Britain's Gloster Meteor. Yet there was another aviation race in the works, one involving rotary aircraft. Germany is a wealthy nation with a GDP of nearly $4 trillion. Yet it refuses to put aside 2% of that to fund its own self defense. Further it is trying hard to give Putin billions of dollars by making Germany dependent on Russian natural gas--which is really strange since everyone tells me Germany is getting rid of fossil fuels. Clearly Germany doesn't care about defending itself so Donald Trump has decided to reduce the number of American soldiers in Germany by about 1/3. CZ: How This Firearms Maker Shook the Gun Industry Up
Peter Suciu, The National Interest - 14 hours ago
*Peter Suciu* *Guns, * Great products at reasonable prices, for one. While names such as Browning, Colt and even Walther or Benelli roll off the tongue, the same can’t be said for Českázbrojovka Uherský Brod, which is why it is commonly just known as CZUB or simply CZ. Founded 101 years ago in the then newly independent Czechoslovakia, the company has become one of Central Europe’s largest producers of firearms for the military, law enforcement and civilian users. “Českázbrojovka” translates to “Czech armory,” and when it was founded. The company is one of several armories locat...
Was Beethoven Black?
Alexander Carpenter, The National Interest - 14 hours ago
*Alexander Carpenter* *Society, * The notion of the great composer’s secret ethnicity has circulated at the fringes of the media and scholarship for more than a century. The year 2020 marks the 250th anniversary of Ludwig van Beethoven’s birth, and in mid-June this year, he started trending on Twitter. Perhaps it wasn’t so strange that Beethoven was popping up on social media platforms, but what was unusual and certainly unforeseen: the claim that “Beethoven was Black.” Where did this idea come from? The circulation of this trope has no doubt been catalyzed by recent events — na...

The U.S. Presidential Election of 1876 Was Pure Chaos. Could 2020 Be the Same?
Rachel Bucchino, The National Interest - 14 hours ago
*Rachel Bucchino* *Politics, Americas* "The 1876 election results are still debated by historians. Tilden had won 184 of 185 needed electoral votes and also led the popular vote by more than 250,000. Four states -- Florida, Louisiana, Oregon, South Carolina -- claimed victory on both sides of the aisle, forcing Congress to dictate which candidate would receive the 20 electoral votes since the Constitution couldn’t determine the outcome." The 1876 presidential election*—*one of the most controversial elections that made Americans question the validity of the Electoral College voti...

It's Too Late To Stop China's Military Catch-Up With America
Robert Farley, The National Interest - 14 hours ago
*Robert Farley* *Security, Asia* China has developed a large, innovative technology economy in its own right. *Here's What You Need To Remember: *The United States has become increasingly aggressive about slowing down or halting China’s industrial espionage efforts. This has included indictments of PLA officers, broad condemnations of Chinese spying, and targeted reprisals against some Chinese firms. But given the extensive commercial contacts between China and the United States, stopping the flow of technology is virtually impossible. As the People’s Republic of China (PRC) eme...
