Allowing Congress To Function During The Pandemic-- Despite GOP Obstructionism
*Bullseye by Nancy Ohanian* It seems to be a new tenet of the Republican Party-- Trump's Republican Party-- that the pandemic isn't serious, or even a hoax, and that there's no need to take extreme precautions. These people are out of their minds and a danger to the rest of us. As John Pavlovitz noted in a post yesterday, "the real story of this disaster: the illness that will linger, the one whose cure will not be forthcoming, the one we’ll never have a vaccine for: the toxic combination of abject selfishness and contempt for science and tribal politics and white supremacy that has... more »
Seek Harmony - The Wisdom of O.M. Aivanvov
*"You must seek harmony because you love harmony, because you need harmony, because you need to enter into the universal symphony. This is how you will open the doors to the luminous forces and entities of nature that will rush in and settle inside you. To bring yourself into harmony means to open yourself up and this opening is what allows the luminous forces to penetrate within you. You will say, ‘Yes, but how do I open myself up?’ Quite simply by loving. When we love, harmony is established and then the doors and windows open and all the blessings of heaven enter into you."* *O... more »

The Sad Story of a Conscript Italian Army That Froze to Death While Fighting Russia
*Michael Peck* *Technology, Europe* [image: https://www.reutersconnect.com/all?id=tag%3Areuters.com%2C2017%3Anewsml_RC121B6BD7A0&share=true] Avoidable deaths in an evil war. *Key point: *These soldiers were forced to assist Hitler's attempt to conquer the vast Soviet Union. It didn't work and millions would perish. Why in God's name were Italian peasants freezing to death outside Stalingrad? They should have been home eating pasta in Palermo, or veal in Venice, during that bitter winter of 1942–43. Instead, they were being trampled into the snow by waves of Soviet tanks that ha... more »

*Walter Olson* *Economics, Americas* [image: https://www.reutersconnect.com/all?id=tag%3Areuters.com%2C2020%3Anewsml_RC2TBG9TUV50&share=true] The economy needs to get going but store owners also worry about complicated and arcane regulations. This Russian Tank Prototype Would Have Withstood a Nuclear Explosion
*Caleb Larson* *Security, * [image: Flickr / Alan Wilson] The Object 279 would have dominated Europe’s nuclear battlefields. In the early days of the Cold War, both American and Soviet war planners assumed that the next European war would be nuclear right from the get-go. Strategic thinking was of the opinion that since the United States and the USSR had nukes—why not use them? A lot of strange prototypes were built around this pretense—and not just tanks, turboprops and jets were designed for the opening hours of a nuclear exchange when planners assumed that one of the first ta... more »

And if they were worried before, those fears seem likely to escalate thanks to COVID-19 and a possible long-term focus on more social distancing and less human contact in the workplace. Iran's Security Forces Have Dedicated Their Existence To Fighting America
*Zachary Keck* *Security, * They have been preparing for years. *Here's What You Need To Remember: *Hezbollah’s utility to Iran has increasingly gone beyond traditional terrorist attacks. Following the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003, Iran used Hezbollah to train Iraqi Shi’a militant groups. With the possible exception of North Korea, no country in the post–Cold War era has sought to challenge the United States as much as Iran. Without fossil fuels, the Wuhan Flu would have us beat, Greta
By Paul Homewood h/t Messenger Quite ludicrously, Greta Thunberg was invited onto a CNN Town Hall panel last week to discuss the coronavirus crisis. Sunday morning music
Let's have a change of pace this morning, to a bygone age. English composer and organist William Boyce was Master of the King's Musick from 1756 until his death in 1779. He wrote eight symphonies, plus many other works. Here's his Symphony No. 1, a pleasant, easy-listening short late baroque/early classical piece. All eight of his symphonies may be heard on YouTube. They're typical of English music of the period. I don't find them particularly outstanding, but they're pleasant background listening, and easy on the ear - which is probably exactly what the Master of the King'... more »

Profitability, investment and the pandemic
Last week’s speech by US Federal Reserve Chair Jay Powell at the Peterson Institute for International Economics, Washington was truly shocking. Powell told his audience of economists that “The scope and speed of this downturn are without modern precedent”. One shocking fact that he announced was that, according to a special Fed survey of ‘economic well-being’ among American households, “Among people who were working in February, almost 40% households making less than $40,000 a year had lost a job in March”!!!

Congress and inside trading, who knew what, when, and then…
There had been rumblings since mid-March if not earlier about inside trading and certain Senate members. The problem has been for years that the Senate Ethics Committee has been lethargic at best and derelict at worst in its mission to make certain Senate members follow the ethical guidelines that have been established. Two of the three ethics violations in eight years were Al Franken and Robert Menendez in 2017. Before that the third investigation was in 2012 on Bret Bernhardt in Senator DeMint’s office. All of those ended up quietly disappearing with barely a ripple: Franken quit; ... more »
